On paper she fills the crowd control slot, but her kit reads more like a hybrid buffer who happens to lock enemies down. She scales off Anomaly Mastery and Anomaly Proficiency, converts those into Impact, triggers Abloom damage through Vibrato stacks, and hands out a team-wide ATK buff through her Ultimate's Ether Veil effect. Build her like a standard Stun unit and you'll leave most of her value on the table.

How does Nangong Yu's kit actually work?
Her entire kit centers on a unique resource called Downbeats. This meter fills gradually over time and jumps significantly whenever teammates land Anomaly or Disorder hits. Once you've stocked enough, holding Basic Attack releases her Charged Attack—a high-Daze strike that simultaneously pushes Anomaly buildup. That Charged Attack flows directly into a Chain Attack from your squad, cashing in the stun for heavy Disorder and Abloom payoff.
Her EX Special Attack, Chain Attack, and Ultimate bypass the lengthy charge animations, keeping your rotation tight without sacrificing damage. The Ultimate specifically triggers Ether Veil, which buffs your entire team's ATK. The loop is compact and deliberate: build Downbeats, fire Charged Attack, follow with Chain Attack, repeat.
Animation cancelling is the single biggest mechanical skill you can develop on Nangong Yu. Manually charging through the full animation wastes time that your DPS could be spending on a stunned target.

- Special Attack — key to her rotation and Polarity Disorder application
Medium priority:
- Chain Attack — strong burst during stun windows, worth levelling after the top three
Lower priority:
- Assist and Dodge — situational, invest here last
Her Core Skill is what makes her scaling work. Without it, the Anomaly Mastery you stack on her Drive Discs doesn't feed back into Impact, which defeats the entire build philosophy.

What is the best W-Engine for Nangong Yu?
Neon Fantasies is her signature S-Rank W-Engine and nothing else comes close. At base it delivers 30% Anomaly Mastery and 90 Anomaly Proficiency. Landing Ether damage buffs the entire squad's damage by 15%, stackable twice, and hitting max stacks adds another 60 Anomaly Proficiency. It's the only Stun W-Engine that directly feeds her Anomaly scaling, which is why the gap between it and alternatives is noticeable.

Pulling a second or third copy of Nangong Yu before securing Neon Fantasies is usually the wrong call. The signature W-Engine provides more practical value than Mindscape Cinema upgrades at early investment levels.
What are the best Drive Discs for Nangong Yu?
Despite her Stun Agent classification, her Drive Disc setup reads like an Anomaly DPS build. That's intentional. Her Core Skill turns Anomaly Mastery into Impact, so stacking Anomaly stats serves both her damage and her stun output simultaneously.
Best set: Phaethon's Melody (4pc) + Freedom Blues (2pc)
This is the most effective setup for her Version 2.7 build. The 4-piece Phaethon's Melody bonus provides 8% Anomaly Mastery and 45 Anomaly Proficiency, plus a 25% Ether DMG increase when other characters use EX Special Attacks. The 2-piece Freedom Blues adds another 30 Anomaly Proficiency. Together they push both her personal damage and her Anomaly trigger consistency.
Second option: Freedom Blues (4pc) + Phaethon's Melody (2pc)
The 4-piece Freedom Blues effect reduces enemy Anomaly Buildup RES, making it easier for the whole team to land Attribute Anomalies. You sacrifice some personal damage but gain team-wide trigger consistency. Strong in Disorder-focused compositions.
Third option: Phaethon's Melody (4pc) + Shockstar Disco (2pc)
Shockstar Disco adds Impact, which helps if your team is struggling to reach stun thresholds quickly. It's a fallback, not a target.
Drive Disc stat priorities
For substats, prioritize in this order: Anomaly Proficiency, ATK%, PEN, flat ATK. Avoid stacking Impact directly on substats since her kit handles that conversion internally.
If you don't have strong pieces from Phaethon's Melody or Freedom Blues, Ether DMG +10% from Chaotic Metal or Shining Aria, or ATK +10% from Astral Voice, are acceptable 2-piece fillers.
What are the best teams for Nangong Yu?
Nangong Yu has limited value outside Anomaly compositions. Her buffs and Disorder mechanics need teammates who actively trigger Anomaly to function at full capacity. Slot her into a traditional Impact-focused Stun team and her kit goes mostly to waste.

This is her best lineup. Aria benefits directly from faster Anomaly buildup and extended stun windows, while Sunna provides ATK buffs and sustain. The internal faction synergy makes this team notably consistent.

- Yuzuha (Support)
Miyabi handles primary damage output, Yuzuha enhances Anomaly application and energy support, and Nangong Yu ties everything together with faster stuns and burst windows. A strong option if you have Miyabi from a previous banner.

High Anomaly uptime means frequent Disorder and Abloom triggers. Sustained damage output is the strength here rather than single burst windows.
Free-to-play team

Piper handles Anomaly damage, Lucy provides ATK buffs, and Nangong Yu enables stun windows and amplifies output. Not as explosive as the premium options, but accessible and functional.
Nangong Yu is far less effective in traditional Stun compositions that don't use Anomaly mechanics. If your team isn't regularly triggering Anomaly or Disorder, you're not getting full value from her kit.
Is Nangong Yu worth pulling in Version 2.7?
She's mechanically interesting in a way that most Stun Agents aren't. The Downbeats resource adds a layer of resource management that rewards players who learn her animation cancel timings, and the payoff when everything clicks is clear. Her main caveats are a higher investment ceiling than most supports (she wants Neon Fantasies to perform at her ceiling), and she's genuinely weak outside Anomaly teams.
If you're building around the Angels of Delusion or already running Miyabi or Yanagi, she fits naturally and makes those teams meaningfully stronger. If your roster doesn't have strong Anomaly DPS units, the investment case is harder to make.
