Phoenix lands in Zenless Zone Zero as an S-Rank Fire Anomaly agent who does something no other driver before her could: she lets your entire squad's Anomaly damage CRIT. Vortexes, Ablooms, Luminizes, all of it gets a separate CRIT calculation applied on top of normal damage. That single mechanic is why she sits at the top of Vortex team rankings, and it's why building her correctly matters more than most agents in the current meta.

What makes Phoenix different from other Anomaly agents?

Her Core Passive: Nirvana applies a state called Sear to any enemy that takes Anomaly DMG from a squad member. While Sear is active, all Anomaly DMG against that enemy can critically hit using a completely separate CRIT calculation from your normal stats. The base values are 30% CRIT Rate and 25% CRIT DMG, but her Additional Ability: Krampus Ace adds another 15% CRIT DMG when another Anomaly agent or same-faction teammate is in the squad, pushing the total to 40%.

Here's why that matters: this CRIT DMG bonus is unsaturated. It doesn't compete with the regular CRIT DMG you'd stack on a standard DPS. Every Vortex, every Luminize from Remielle, every Abloom Phoenix herself triggers, they all benefit from this multiplier in full.

The catch is that it applies strictly to Anomaly DMG, not Disorder DMG. That restriction is what locks Phoenix into Vortex-focused teams for peak performance.

Phoenix resource management: Pyre, Ascension, and Combustion Attacks

Phoenix manages two resources alongside her standard Energy bar.

Pyre fills a gauge capped at 120. Her Basic 3, Basic 4, alternate Basic (Meltdown), all three EX Specials, Chain Attack, and Ultimate are all tagged as Combustion Attacks, and each generates Pyre on hit. A successful Perfect Block adds 5 Pyre with a 10-second cooldown. Once you hit 90 Pyre, you can spend it on Basic Attack: Purifying Flame, her enhanced Basic that triggers an Abloom with a 445% multiplier at level 12, plus an extra 40% CRIT DMG on top of Nirvana's bonus.

Ascension is a single-point resource generated by using EX Special: Falling Sun (her EX2). Spending it activates EX Special: Blazing Slash (her EX3), which costs zero Energy. At M6, using EX1 (Dazzling Flare) also generates an Ascension point, effectively doubling EX3 usage per fight.

The standard EX cycle flows as: Dazzling Flare (EX1) → Falling Sun (EX2) → Blazing Slash (EX3). EX1 and EX2 each cost 40 Energy; EX3 is free. All three are Combustion Attacks with Perfect Block properties, and all three link directly into Basic 3 after use.

What is the best W-Engine for Phoenix?

W-EngineTypeKey StatsNotes
Nirvana's First Plume (Plume of Rebirth)SignatureAnomaly Mastery mainstat, 90 AP, 40% Fire DMGBest in slot. Fire DMG activates on first Anomaly CRIT, so trigger Windswept early
Angel in the ShellS-Rank alternativeAnomaly Mastery mainstat, 90 APEther-locked damage passive doesn't activate on Phoenix, but AM and AP are identical to Signature
Electro-Lip GlossA-Rank Battle PassDMG Dealt bonusBest A-Rank pick at 5 copies. No AM mainstat, so you'll need to compensate elsewhere
Weeping GeminiF2P craftableHigh Anomaly ProficiencyFunctional without AM mainstat. Stacks quickly thanks to frequent Windswept and Burn Vortexes
Flamemaker ShakerBurnice SignatureEnergy Regen focusUnderperforms. Phoenix's on-field playstyle barely benefits from the Energy Regen, and EX tick rate is too slow to build stacks efficiently

The Signature's 40% Fire DMG does need one Anomaly CRIT to activate, but in a Velina team the first Windswept trigger counts. Since Anomaly snapshots stats at build-up time, getting that first Windswept proc early is worth prioritizing.

What are the best Drive Discs for Phoenix?

4-piece Freedom Blues + 2-piece Phaethon's Melody is the recommended setup.

Freedom Blues works because Phoenix's Core Passive deals Fire DMG to Seared enemies every 8 seconds, and that tick is treated as EX Special Attack DMG. This means the 4-piece effect (reducing Fire Anomaly Buildup RES by 20% for 8 seconds after an EX hit) has permanent uptime automatically, without any additional routing. More Anomaly build-up means more Vortex triggers, which is Phoenix's entire damage model.

Chaos Jazz is a competitive alternative, particularly in Velina + Remielle teams where Phoenix lacks personal DMG Bonus sources. The 4-piece provides a timed EX DMG bonus, but it does have roughly 2.5 seconds of downtime per cycle. You'll need to save Energy and Ascension for stun windows to get full value, which adds routing complexity. It can match Freedom Blues on output, but demands more precise play.

Phaethon's Melody as the 2-piece is not optional. Its 8% Anomaly Mastery bonus is required to hit the 255 AM threshold in a standard setup (152 base AM × (1 + 30% W-Engine + 30% Disc 6 + 8% 2-piece) = 255.36 AM).

Drive Disc main stats and substats

SlotMain StatPriority
Disc 4Anomaly ProficiencyAlways. AP feeds Abloom scaling and CRIT damage output
Disc 5Fire DMG Bonus or PEN RatioFire DMG is better at M0-M1 with Signature. PEN Ratio pulls ahead at M2+ when Fire DMG becomes saturated
Disc 6Anomaly MasteryRequired for Nirvana's CRIT Rate cap. Use a fully upgraded S-Rank piece

Substat priority: Anomaly Proficiency > ATK% > PEN > flat ATK

Do not build conventional CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG substats. Phoenix's Anomaly CRIT uses Nirvana's separate calculation, and those stats do nothing for it.

Endgame targets: Anomaly Mastery 255, Anomaly Proficiency 330+, ATK 2,400-2,600+

Skill upgrade priority

Upgrade Core Passive first, then follow this order:

  1. Core Passive (to rank F) — unlocks full 85 Anomaly Proficiency and the Anomaly Mastery nodes that feed Nirvana's CRIT Rate scaling
  2. Basic Attack (to 12) — Purifying Flame Abloom multiplier and Daze scale here
  3. Ultimate / Chain Attack (to 12/11) — Soul-Searching Blaze has a 597% Abloom multiplier at max, stronger than EBA's 445%
  4. EX Special / Assist — Daze improvements, secondary priority
  5. Dodge — leave at 7 or lower; it rarely sees use in standard rotations

What are the best teams for Phoenix?

Phoenix's CRIT bonus applies only to Anomaly DMG, not Disorder. That single restriction means Vortex teams are her home, and she has a significant performance gap between her best lineup and anything that doesn't run Wind Anomaly.

Phoenix + Velina + Remielle (best team)

This is the team. Velina's Windswept and Vortex are both Anomaly DMG, so they both inherit Phoenix's CRIT bonus in full. Remielle's Luminizes are also Anomaly DMG, meaning her already high damage output gets the CRIT multiplier applied to every single cast. Phoenix also fills the third Anomaly slot that strengthens Remielle's own kit passives.

The combo depth here is real. After testing rotations across both stun and non-stun windows, the priority is maximizing Vortex count first, then fitting in Remielle Luminizes around that. Sometimes pushing for more Voidflares costs Vortex triggers, and the Vortex side usually wins.

Phoenix + Velina + Yuzuha (Remielle substitute)

Yuzuha doesn't get direct value from Phoenix's CRIT bonus (her Sweet Scare attacks aren't Anomaly DMG), but her ATK buffs, Anomaly Buildup Rate increase, and Attribute Anomaly DMG bonuses still translate into more Vortex triggers. The team is meaningfully weaker than the Remielle version, but it's a solid option if Remielle isn't built yet.

For a full breakdown of how to build Yuzuha's teammate in this lineup, see the Nangong Yu build guide for a comparable Anomaly support structure.

Phoenix + Velina + Nangong Yu (Stun-focused variant)

Nangong Yu shifts the team toward Stun window burst. Her Misstep mechanic raises Stun DMG Multiplier and extends the next Stun duration by 3 seconds when applied before the Stun triggers. Her Core Passive also provides a teamwide damage buff, and her Additional Ability improves Anomaly Buildup against Stunned enemies. Phoenix and Velina activate her conditional bonuses. This team trades some Vortex frequency for harder stun window hits.

Mindscape investment guide

MindscapeWhat it addsWorth it?
M0Full base kit, Sear, teamwide Anomaly CRITRequired starting point
M1+1 Ascension on entry, +25% Anomaly CRIT DMG on Sear, 15% faster Pyre genStrong first upgrade. The CRIT DMG increase applies to all Anomaly DMG, making it nearly an 18% team damage increase
M2Burn duration +2s, +30% Phoenix DMG against Seared enemiesGood personal damage bump. Shifts Disc 5 preference toward PEN Ratio
M4Extra Abloom on EBA and Soul-Searching Blaze finisher at fixed 600% multiplierDecent, though the fixed multiplier doesn't scale with skill levels and doesn't get the standard 40% CRIT DMG bonus
M615% All-Attribute RES Ignore (Phoenix only), Ascension on EX1 use, 40% DEF Ignore on AbloomsWeaker than it looks. RES Ignore applies only to Phoenix's own attacks, not Vortexes or Luminizes. The Ascension on EX1 is genuinely useful though

The mistake most players make with M6 is assuming the 15% RES Ignore applies to the whole team's Anomaly output. It doesn't. Vortexes and Luminizes are attributed to Velina and Remielle as their triggerers, so Phoenix's RES Ignore doesn't touch them. M1 gives better team-wide value than M6 despite the lower rarity.

How to play Phoenix: rotation fundamentals

Phoenix's kit looks complex with three separate EX Specials and two resource bars, but the actual flowchart is straightforward once the connections click.

Standard loop (no Energy available): Basic 3 → Basic 4 → Special (Fire Sweep) → Meltdown (alternate Basic) → Basic 3 → Basic 4, repeat

Using a Combustion Attack before Special skips the retreat animation, so chaining Basic 4 directly into Special is faster than it looks. EX Specials replace the Special in this loop when Energy is available, with EX2 (Falling Sun) being the best swap-out point to Velina or Remielle due to its longer animation.

During stun windows: Phoenix's Chain Attack has exceptionally high Anomaly build-up. Giving her two Chain Attack uses per stun is generally worth it, even if it means slightly delaying teammate resources. Her Ultimate consumes all HP but immediately triggers Soul-Searching Blaze on re-entry, recovering the HP plus an extra 10% of Max HP. Use it, swap out during Soul-Searching Blaze's animation to save time, and let the Abloom trigger carry over to the next skill.

The Rebirth passive means Phoenix survives one fatal hit per fight (1200-second cooldown) and heals 50% Max HP on the next entry. It's a genuine safety net in modes like Operation Bagel, and it makes her more forgiving to play aggressively than most Anomaly agents.

The recommended skill targets (12/12/11/10/7) use fewer skill materials than full max. Agent EXP and W-Engine upgrades are separate costs.

Frequently asked questions

Does Phoenix need CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG discs? No. Her Anomaly CRIT mechanic uses Nirvana's own calculation. Build Anomaly Mastery to scale the CRIT Rate, then Anomaly Proficiency and ATK for damage. Conventional CRIT stats do nothing for her Anomaly output.

Can Phoenix use Angel in the Shell's full passive? No. Its conditional damage bonuses require an Ether equipper. Phoenix gets the Anomaly Mastery mainstat and the unconditional 90 Anomaly Proficiency, which is still valuable, but the extra damage effects don't activate.

Does Phoenix's Ultimate permanently defeat her? No. It places her in the Wither state as part of her combat loop. Soul-Searching Blaze ends that state and restores all consumed HP plus an additional 10% of Max HP.

Can Phoenix work outside Vortex teams? Technically yes, but her CRIT bonus doesn't apply to Disorder DMG, which is where most non-Vortex Anomaly teams generate their output. A Phoenix team without Wind Anomaly will underperform a comparable team running a different driver in the same slot.
