Zafari, the Bandit Queen is one of Absolum's rarest encounters. She's a secret boss, meaning she won't appear in every run, and getting to her requires a specific path through the game's earlier zones. The reward is worth it: a stack of gold, healing items, and an inspiration ability that can carry you through the next stretch of the game.
How do you reach Zafari the Bandit Queen?
Zafari sits on a ship immediately after you defeat The Underking, so the path to her follows the same route you'd take to reach him. Getting there efficiently means knowing which branches to take from the very start.
From the first area, head to the bottom right and break the boulder there to access the secret route. You'll clear some standard enemy encounters before reaching the Mushtroll boss, who drops an inspiration ability on defeat. After that, take the bottom path at the camp to reach Gazorg. The waterfall section along that route has fish you can hit and eat for healing, so don't rush past it.
Once Gazorg is down, jump into the mists to pick up a ritual upgrade. If you've held onto 200 coins at this point, you can buy an additional ritual upgrade before heading into The Underking's arena. Clearing The Underking puts you on the ship.
On the ship, walk toward the back of the boat. There's a locked door between two staircases. Break the lock and head inside. You'll find Zafari's treasure chest, and opening it is what triggers the fight.
Before you open the chest, check whether any companions are available for purchase on the ship. For 50 coins, a companion can make the fight considerably easier given how little room you have to maneuver.
What makes Zafari's fight so difficult?
The arena is the real problem. The cabin is tight, and Zafari uses a large weapon with wide sweeping attacks that eat up whatever space you think you have. There's almost no room to back off and reset. The upside is that the same tight quarters that hurt your movement also make it easy to land Punish damage, so aggressive play is actually rewarded here.
Phase one: reading her attacks
In phase one, Zafari uses big swipes and dash attacks to close distance quickly. Most of her moves can be deflected, but watch for attacks with a visible wind-up animation. Those have slightly different timing, and if you're deflecting on reflex rather than reading the animation, you'll get caught. Stay patient, deflect the readable attacks, and punish her recovery windows.
Don't pick up food items from the ground during the early part of the fight. Save them for when her damage starts adding up, or hold them for after the fight ends.
Phase two: staying aggressive
Phase two adds one new attack and makes Zafari more aggressive overall. She'll chain through more swings even when you're landing hits, so don't assume a successful attack will interrupt her combo. She only gains one new move in this phase, and if your build has solid damage output, you can burn through her health fast since she presses forward constantly rather than backing off.
The strategy doesn't change dramatically from phase one. Keep deflecting, land punishes, and use your companion's pressure to split her attention if you brought one.
Zafari is described in the source material as easier to land Punish damage on than many other bosses, specifically because the tight cabin keeps her close. Use that to your advantage rather than trying to play defensively.
What do you get for beating Zafari?
The rewards are genuinely useful. You'll receive an inspiration ability, a significant amount of gold (the exact amount scales with your Luck stat), and several healing items. That combination sets you up well for the next major encounters, whether you're heading toward Yeldrim or Jaroba.
Beating her also unlocks Zafari's stories, which provide background on the world and its characters. Pay attention to what she shares, as some of that information points toward other secrets in the game.
After defeating Zafari once, her cabin will be locked in subsequent runs. To fight her again, you'll need to pay 500 coins and then wait a random amount of time before the cabin becomes accessible again. There's no reliable way to force the unlock faster.
Building toward the fight
