Aion 2 asks you to pick a side before you ever see the world of Atreia. Elyos or Asmodian — two factions, one permanent choice per character. The good news is that this decision carries far less mechanical weight than it might seem. No class is locked behind a faction, no stat advantage tips the scales, and crafted gear with different names still performs identically. What does change is your starting continent, your main story campaign, and the server you call home. Get those three things right and the rest falls into place.
What actually separates Elyos from Asmodian?
Both factions play as Daevas, ascended winged beings native to Atreia. The split between them is thematic and territorial, not mechanical. Every one of the eight launch classes (Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter) is available on both sides. There are no faction-exclusive stat bonuses and no hidden power ceiling tied to your banner.
The original Aion gave Asmodians claws, restricted skin tones, and a distinct silhouette. Aion 2 has pulled back hard on those differences. Character creation options are now broadly the same across both factions, so you cannot base your choice on wanting a specific body type or face. The one cosmetic distinction that remains is wings: Elyos receive white or golden feathered wings at ascension, while Asmodians get darker, more angular designs. That single visual difference is the clearest faction marker you will carry through the entire game.

Aion 2 Elyos vs Asmodian: Which Faction Should You Pick?
Crafted gear also carries faction-specific naming. An Elyos character crafting at the top tier produces Celestial equipment; the Asmodian equivalent is called Demonic. The next tier follows the same pattern with Genesis versus Nemesis. Stats, recipes, and material costs are identical — only the label changes. If you follow a guide written by someone on the opposite faction, cross-reference the gear tier rather than the item name.
How do the starting zones and stories differ?
Elyos begin in Elysea, a brighter, more ordered region with radiant forests and structured cities. The main story leans into themes of light, duty, and preservation. Early leveling takes you through areas like Verteron, with field bosses and quest lines specific to that territory.
Asmodians start in Asmodae, a harsher world of tundras, canyons, and fortified settlements. Their campaign frames adversity and resilience as virtues. Early progression runs through zones like Altgard, with its own set of field bosses and titles tied to that region.
Neither story is a continuation of the other — they are parallel perspectives on the same conflict. Field boss titles, regional achievements, and quest rewards are locked to each faction's territory during normal play. You can experience both sides by creating a second character on an opposing faction server, and nothing stops you from doing exactly that.

Aion 2 Elyos vs Asmodian: Which Faction Should You Pick?
Does faction affect PvP and endgame?
This is where the choice has real, lasting weight. Aion 2's core identity is faction-versus-faction combat, and the endgame zone called the Abyss is where that conflict comes to a head. The faction you pick determines which side of that war you fight for, permanently, on that character.
Servers are structured around factions. Each server hosts one side, and servers are paired across factions so that Elyos and Asmodian players meet in the Abyss and other designated PvP spaces. Open-world leveling stays separated, which removes the griefing that plagued the original game. Paired servers can change over time — the South Korean build has seen both cross-faction and same-faction pairings — so the specific opponents you face in ranked content may shift after launch.
One meaningful exception to the faction wall: instanced content like certain dungeons allows cross-faction party formation. Elyos and Asmodians can group together for those activities even though they fight each other in the Abyss. This matters practically because it keeps dungeon queues healthy regardless of how population shakes out between the two sides.
Should you care about server population?
More than almost anything else, yes. In a faction-war MMO, a well-organised faction on a healthy server will outperform a theoretically stronger faction that is outnumbered or disorganised. Population balance shapes how often your side wins Abyss engagements, how quickly group content queues pop, and whether the open world feels active or empty.
The War for Atreia creator event, announced on September 21, 2026, adds a live dimension to this. NC America drafted 60 streamers across North America, Europe, and Latin America into Elyos and Asmodian rosters. Six regional captains lead each side: Stoopzz (Elyos NA) versus Sonii (Asmodian NA), Baggins (Elyos EU) versus Wakayashi (Asmodian EU), and Rakin (Elyos LatAm) versus Tixinha (Asmodian LatAm). Viewers earn bounties that feed a global Faction War score and regional Legion rankings, with Twitch Drops active across multiple rounds.
The creator rosters are the best available signal for which faction will be over-represented at launch. Large creator communities pull players to one side, and that population skew matters more in week one than any lore preference.
How do you join a faction in Aion 2?
Faction selection happens at the server selection screen during character creation. Choosing an Elyos server creates an Elyos character; choosing an Asmodian server locks you to that side. There is no separate quest, no level requirement, and no ceremony — you pick your server, build your character, and begin.

Which faction should you actually pick?
Three questions, in order of importance:
- Who are you playing with? Match your group's faction. This overrides everything else. Faction servers keep Elyos and Asmodians separated in the open world, so splitting from friends means separate leveling routes and separate social graphs.
- Which aesthetic do you want to look at for hundreds of hours? Bright, celestial environments and white wings, or darker, harsher terrain and angular wing designs. Both are legitimate reasons to pick a side.
- Which story appeals more? Order, light, and preservation versus resilience, survival, and hard-won strength. You can play both eventually, but your first campaign shapes how you experience Atreia.
Notice what is not on that list: "which faction wins more" or "which has better classes." Classes are identical across both factions, and no global balance data for the Western launch exists yet. Any tier list claiming one faction is stronger right now is extrapolating from the Korean or Taiwanese build, which NC reworked for the global release.
