Overview
Bully: Scholarship Edition is Rockstar Toronto's expanded take on the 2006 original, released in February 2008 for PC, Xbox 360, and Wii. The premise sounds simple: a troubled teenager gets dumped at a boarding school and has to survive. What makes it work is how carefully Rockstar constructed Bullworth Academy as a living social system, where jocks, nerds, preppies, greasers, and bullies all operate by their own rules and respond to Jimmy's actions accordingly.
The Scholarship Edition adds four new classes, two new missions, and additional characters not present in the original PlayStation 2 release. It also brings unlockable items and expanded content that make the already dense game feel even more complete. For anyone who played the original and never revisited it, the differences are noticeable enough to justify a second run.
Gameplay and mechanics
Jimmy's core toolkit covers a lot of ground for a single character:

- Melee combat with a dodge-and-counter system
- Slingshot, stink bombs, and other improvised weapons
- Bike and go-kart traversal around Bullworth Town
- Class mini-games that unlock real stat boosts
- Social interactions that shift faction standing
The class system is where Bully separates itself from Rockstar's other open-world games. Attending English class improves Jimmy's ability to talk his way out of trouble. Chemistry unlocks new projectiles. Gym class improves combat stats. Skipping class raises your trouble meter with the faculty. Every mechanic feeds back into how the world responds to you.

Combat is simple by modern standards but never feels like a liability. The brawling is punchy and readable, and the game rarely demands precision. What it does demand is attention to the social ecosystem. Attacking a nerd in front of jocks has consequences. Helping a greaser with a job shifts faction respect. Every action carries social weight.
World and setting
Bullworth Academy sits inside a small fictional New England town, and the game opens up the surrounding area as Jimmy progresses through the five chapters. The town includes a carnival, a shopping district, a trailer park, and a beach, each tied to specific story beats and faction territories.
The day-night cycle and class schedule give the world real structure. Students follow routines. Faculty patrol at certain hours. Curfew kicks in after dark. The game never lets the world feel like a static backdrop.

What makes Scholarship Edition worth playing today?
For a game released in 2008, Bully holds its structure better than most of its contemporaries. The writing is sharp and genuinely funny in places, the missions are varied enough to stay interesting across a 15-to-20 hour playthrough, and the social systems feel ahead of their time. Most open-world games still treat NPCs as props. Bullworth treats them as a political map.
The PC version available on Steam runs on aging technology, and the port has known issues with modern hardware that some players address through community patches. The core game underneath those technical wrinkles remains one of the most focused open-world experiences Rockstar has ever shipped. Tight map, clear stakes, and a protagonist with more personality than most leading characters in games twice its budget.
