Overview

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is a prequel to GTA III, set in 1998 across the three familiar boroughs of Liberty City. Players control Toni Cipriani, a Leone family soldier who returns from hiding after killing a made man on Salvatore Leone's orders. The city he comes back to is fractured, with rival crime families, corrupt politicians, and a mother who seems more interested in embarrassing him than welcoming him home.

The game was originally built for the PSP, making it one of the first portable entries in the GTA series to deliver a full open-world experience on handheld hardware. Rockstar Leeds handled development, and the result was a game that punched well above what most expected from a portable title. Later ports to PS2, iOS, and Android expanded the audience considerably, with the mobile version arriving in 2015 for iOS and 2016 for Android.

Gameplay and mechanics

Liberty City Stories runs on a mission-based structure that fans of the 3D-era GTA games will recognize immediately. Key mechanics include:

  • On-foot combat and shooting
  • Vehicle theft and driving missions
  • Gang territory control
  • Side missions and odd jobs
  • Wanted level system

The controls were adapted from the PSP's single analog stick setup, which meant Rockstar Leeds had to rethink how driving and camera work functioned. The PS2 and mobile versions restored dual-analog input, making the experience considerably smoother. Combat relies on a lock-on targeting system consistent with GTA III and Vice City, so players already familiar with that era of the series will adjust quickly.

World and setting

Liberty City in 1998 looks and feels like a direct ancestor of GTA III's version of the same map. Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale are all present, though the city carries a different tone. The Leone family is still dominant, the Sindaccos and Forellis are active threats, and the entire criminal infrastructure that gets dismantled in GTA III is still standing. That context gives the game a distinct dramatic weight for players who know how the story ends.

The narrative moves through a cast of characters that includes Vincenzo Cilli, a rival who rose during Toni's absence, J.D. O'Toole, a Sindacco defector working with Leone, and Salvatore Leone himself, voiced consistently with his GTA III appearance. Toni's mother, Maria, and a rotating crew of corrupt city officials fill out a story that mixes mob drama with absurdist humor in a way the series had already made its signature.

Impact and legacy

Liberty City Stories holds a specific place in GTA history as proof that a full-scale open-world game could work on portable hardware without meaningful compromise. When it launched on PSP in October 2005, it sold well enough to become one of the platform's strongest titles and demonstrated that the GTA formula didn't require a television screen to land.

The mobile ports have kept the game accessible well past its original hardware generation. On iOS and Android, the game includes touch controls and updated visuals, making it a reasonable entry point for players who want to experience the 3D-era GTA games without tracking down legacy consoles. For anyone interested in the full arc of Liberty City's criminal history, this is where that story begins.
