The Axion is a full-auto assault rifle that sits toward the upper end of the AR roster in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, but it earns its reputation. Modeled after an Adaptive Combat Rifle aesthetic, it brings a high rate of fire and strong base stability to the table. The catch is that it unlocks at Player Level 52, so you have to earn it. Once you do, the right build turns it into one of the cleanest ARs for medium and long-range play in 6v6 multiplayer.

What makes the Axion worth using?

The Axion sits in a comfortable middle ground: it does not have the raw stopping power of the Kastov 762 or the snap-to-target feel of the M4, but it handles more predictably than either at sustained range. Its 30-round default mag with 90 rounds in reserve keeps you in fights, and a max gun level of 69 means there is plenty of room to customize. The fire mode is full-auto only, so the build philosophy centers on tightening recoil and extending damage range rather than patching a fundamental weakness.

Best standard Axion attachment loadout

This build targets ADS recoil control and damage range while preserving enough mobility to stay competitive against SMG players at medium distance.

SlotAttachmentKey Benefit
OpticSlimline Elite (Mini Reflex)Clean sight picture, minimal visual noise
BarrelMatuzek S5-Brace / SA DMN-L 30"Sound suppression, muzzle velocity, damage range
UnderbarrelFSSS Fireline Grip (Angled Grip)ADS recoil control, ADS speed, sprint-to-fire speed
Rear GripGS50 Grip (Skeleton Grip)ADS speed, sprint-to-fire speed, flinch resistance
StockCronen BlackstoneADS recoil control, ADS speed

The barrel is the most impactful slot here. The Matuzek S5-Brace (silenced) gives you suppression alongside muzzle velocity and damage range gains, but if you prefer an unsuppressed option, a heavy barrel variant trades the sound suppression for even more range. The Slimline Elite is the go-to red dot for this rifle, though the optic slot is genuinely interchangeable based on personal preference.

The FSSS Fireline Grip and GS50 Grip work together to shorten the time between sprinting and firing, which matters more than players expect on maps with mixed sightlines. The Cronen Blackstone stock locks down the remaining vertical kick so the gun stays on target through a full burst.

Best Apex Axion attachment loadout

The Apex configuration transforms the Axion into a different weapon entirely. The Reaver Apex attachment converts the rifle to a chainsaw-style rear grip with a handlebar foregrip, hip laser, and canted aiming. The entire build shifts toward hipfire aggression at short-to-medium range.

ApexReaverHipfire configuration, canted aiming, blocks Laser/Optic/Stock/Rear Grip
BarrelXRK 09-RTAC Pro (Short Barrel)Hip recoil control, movement speed, ADS speed
MuzzleZLR Reverb90 (Vertical Comp)Vertical recoil control
Magazine100 Round DrumSustained fire capacity
Ammunition.300 BLK Hollow PointWounding rounds

The Reaver blocks four attachment slots (Laser, Optic, Stock, Rear Grip), so the rest of the build compensates. The XRK 09-RTAC Pro short barrel keeps movement speed up and hipfire tight. The 100 Round Drum is the standout choice here: the Apex build is built for extended engagements and suppression, and running dry mid-fight defeats the purpose. The .300 BLK Hollow Point ammunition adds wounding rounds, which can disrupt enemy movement and force repositioning.

What perks and equipment should you run?

The perk and equipment setup varies slightly between the two builds, but the core logic stays the same: you want situational awareness, reload speed, and ammo sustainability.

Standard build perks and equipment:

  • Perk 1: High Alert (vision pulse when spotted outside of view)
  • Perk 2: Fast Hands (faster reloads, equipment use, and weapon swaps)
  • Perk 3: Scavenger (enemies drop ammo caches on death)
  • Tactical: Stim (immediate health regen, refreshes Tactical Sprint)
  • Lethal: Semtex (timed sticky grenade)
  • Field Upgrade: Munitions Box (ammo and equipment resupply for you and teammates)

Alternative perk options (Apex or aggressive build):

  • Perk 1: Ghost or Ninja
  • Perk 2: Bomb Squad or Fast Hands
  • Perk 3: Battle Hardened or Blood Rush
  • Tactical: Concussion Grenade
  • Lethal: Frag Grenade
  • Field Upgrade: Trophy System

Fast Hands is non-negotiable on the standard build because the Axion's reload speed is not exceptional, and swapping to a secondary quickly can save engagements that go sideways. High Alert pairs well with a mid-range AR playstyle since you are often holding angles where enemies can spot you first. Scavenger makes particular sense if you are running the 100-round Apex build, since burning through a drum mag leaves you dry fast.

How to unlock the Axion

The Axion becomes available at Player Level 52. There is no shortcut or challenge path to unlock it early. It is classified as an Assault Rifle with a Full-Auto fire mode, a default mag size of 30 rounds, and 90 rounds in reserve. The max gun level is 69, giving you access to the full attachment pool once you reach it.

Standard vs. Apex: which build should you use?

The answer depends entirely on your playstyle and the map pool.

The standard build is the safer pick for most players. It keeps the Axion performing like a traditional AR: consistent recoil, good damage range, and reliable ADS performance. It fits medium-range maps and modes where you need to hold lanes.

The Apex build is an offensive support pick. The Reaver configuration and 100-round drum make it effective for pushing objectives, suppressing choke points, and close-quarters aggression. The canted aiming option gives you some flexibility, but you are committing to a hipfire-first philosophy when you equip the Reaver.
