Prestige Mode is back in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and this time Infinity Ward gave players an actual choice at Level 55. You can go the old-school route with Classic Prestige and reset everything for bigger rewards, or pick Regular Prestige and keep your unlocks while still earning progression. Neither option is wrong, but picking the wrong one for your situation will cost you.

Here's the short answer: if you want the full rewards track and don't mind rebuilding your loadouts, go Classic. If you want to keep grinding with your preferred weapons from day one, Regular is the cleaner option.

What are the two Prestige modes in MW4?

Both modes unlock once you hit Level 55 in multiplayer, which is also when you've unlocked every weapon, perk, killstreak, and piece of equipment in Create-a-Class. At that point, you have three paths:

  • Stay at Level 55 permanently with all unlocks intact, but stop earning XP toward your player level and lock yourself out of all Prestige rewards.
  • Enter Classic Prestige, which resets your level to 1 and relocks all class items, but hands you a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token, a new Prestige Icon, and a full set of exclusive rewards.
  • Enter Regular Prestige, which resets your level to 1 but keeps all class item unlocks permanently. You earn a new Prestige Icon and a smaller subset of rewards.

The third option, staying at 55, is rarely worth it. You're trading all future progression for the convenience of never resetting.

Classic vs Regular Prestige: what's the real difference?

The 20% XP boost in Classic compounds across your entire account's life, not just one cycle. That means every future session earns faster, which matters a lot if you're planning multiple Prestiges. The Permanent Unlock Token lets you permanently unlock one class item per Prestige, so you can strategically protect your most-used weapon or perk from the relock.

Regular Prestige trades all of that for one thing: you never have to re-unlock your loadout. If you run a specific setup every single game and the idea of grinding back to your preferred rifle feels like punishment, Regular keeps you operational from match one.

What happens after Prestige 10?

Completing all 10 Classic Prestiges unlocks Prestige Master status, which comes with its own icon and a significant rewards package. From there, your level counter continues past 55. Every 100 levels earned as a Prestige Master unlocks additional rewards, including new gamertag color options and the ability to equip classic Prestige icons instead of the Prestige Master icon.

Reach Level 1,000 and the game grants Prestige Legend status, the highest tier, with its own exclusive icon and rewards. Multiplayer levels hard cap at 1,000.

Should you Prestige in MW4 multiplayer?

The mistake most players make is treating the reset as a punishment rather than a progression tool. Classic Prestige is the intended path for anyone who wants to earn the full catalog of cosmetics, blueprints, and Operator skins the game offers. The 20% XP boost means each subsequent cycle moves faster than the last, and the Permanent Unlock Token lets you protect one item per reset so the relock becomes less painful over time.

Regular Prestige is a legitimate choice if you're deep into camo challenges on specific weapons and don't want to risk losing access mid-grind. Relocking a weapon you've been leveling is a real concern, especially for late-unlocked guns that sit behind higher Soldier Ranks.

For players focused on the all game modes in MW4 and spreading playtime across different playlists, Classic Prestige's XP boost makes the grind across all those modes noticeably faster.

Which Prestige path is best for camos?

The MW4 Camo Track spans Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone toward Mastery Camo Challenges. The mode eligibility for each individual challenge matters, so check the challenge text rather than assuming all modes count.

Your situationRecommended path
Grinding camos on a late-unlocked weaponFinish the challenge before Classic relocks it, or use your Permanent Unlock Token on that weapon
Want all Prestige-exclusive cosmeticsClassic Prestige is the only route
Hate rebuilding loadouts every resetRegular Prestige keeps you operational immediately
Targeting Prestige Master or Prestige LegendClassic only, Regular does not qualify
Casual player, limited session timeRegular Prestige removes the friction of re-unlocking

If you're planning a Classic run, the Permanent Unlock Token is most valuable on a weapon you use across multiple game modes. Protecting your primary weapon means you can keep camo challenges running from Level 1 of each new cycle instead of waiting to re-unlock it.

For a deeper look at what the game offers across its modes, the MW4 maps guide breaks down all 12 launch locations and which ones suit different playstyles.

Before you hit confirm on your first Prestige

Run through this checklist before locking in either choice:

  1. Name your next goal. Prestige Master, a specific camo, or just faster XP? The goal determines the path.
  2. Finish or deliberately pause your current weapon challenge. Don't let a reset interrupt a counter you've been building.
  3. Decide which item gets your Permanent Unlock Token if you're going Classic. Your most-used weapon or a key perk are the obvious candidates.
  4. Prepare a backup weapon for the early levels of a Classic cycle. You won't have your primary back immediately.
  5. Read the displayed losses and rewards on the confirmation screen before clicking through.
