Dave the Diver - In the Jungle walkthrough - Chapter 5: Fruit of the Blue Divine Tree - Neoseeker

The Giant Fringehead is the second boss you'll face in the turn-based combat section of DAVE THE DIVER's In the Jungle DLC, and it hits noticeably harder than the Giant Goby you dealt with earlier. With 950 HP, a self-healing move, and attacks that almost always apply Bleed, walking in underprepared will cost you. Here's everything you need to know to take it down cleanly.

Should you upgrade gear before the fight?

Yes, and this is the single most important thing to do before triggering the encounter. Visit Rimbo near Bancho Sushi and pick up better weapons and equipment for Dave, Cobra, and Muna. The upgrades cost several thousand Doni, so run a few successful nights at Bancho Grill beforehand if your funds are low. Arriving with maxed-out gear makes the difference between a clean win and a frustrating wipe.

What role does each party member play?

Getting the roles right is what makes this fight manageable. Each character has a clear job, and mixing them up wastes turns.

Dave

Dave functions as your primary healer and a secondary damage dealer. His Body Slam deals decent single-target damage, but his real value comes from keeping the party healthy. Once his healing skill reaches a high enough level, it can restore HP for the whole party at once, which is a big deal when Bleed is spreading across your team.

Cobra

Cobra is your main damage source. His Sniper Rifle move hits hard, and his basic attack also deals solid damage if you nail the button timing. Keep him attacking every turn unless something urgent demands otherwise.

Muna

Muna is the most active character in this fight. Her Cheer skill buffs your whole party's attack power, and Bad Words reduces the Giant Fringehead's defense. Cycling these two abilities gives you a significant edge over the course of the fight. She can also cleanse Bleed with Vaccine, which is essential since nearly every boss attack can inflict it. On turns where no one needs cleansing and buffs are already active, use Muna to restore AP for whoever is running low.

What attacks does the Giant Fringehead use?

Knowing the attack patterns ahead of time lets you react instead of scramble.

Bite attacks

The boss uses two versions of a Bite attack throughout the fight: one that targets a single party member and one that hits the whole party. Both have a chance to inflict Bleed even when you successfully block. Since Muna can only cleanse one person per turn, prioritize healing your most damaged character first and work through the rest.

Dive and resurface

The Giant Fringehead can vanish off-screen for a turn, then come back with a heavy hit against everyone. This mirrors what the Giant Goby did earlier in the DLC. The moment the boss disappears, switch every party member to Defense. The damage reduction makes the return strike much more survivable.

Self-heal

The boss can restore its own HP, though it does this rarely. Expect it around the 50% HP mark. It only happened once during testing, and between Cobra's consistent damage output and Dave's occasional attacks, you have enough firepower to push through it without major issues.

Can you apply status effects to the Giant Fringehead?

No. Every attempt to inflict Paralysis, Poison, or Burn on the Giant Fringehead gets blocked outright. Even Cobra's Incendiary Sniper Rifle never applies Burn regardless of how many times it connects. Don't waste turns trying. Stick to Muna's Bad Words to chip away at the boss's defense instead, which actually works.

Step-by-step turn priority

Here's the general rotation to follow each turn:

  • Muna: Apply Cheer and Bad Words if not active. Cleanse Bleed with Vaccine when needed. Restore AP for low characters on free turns.
  • Cobra: Attack every turn with Sniper Rifle or basic attack. No exceptions unless you're out of AP.
  • Dave: Heal whoever took the most damage. Use Body Slam only when the party is in good shape and no healing is needed.
  • All three: Switch to Defense the moment the boss dives underwater.

What do you get for beating the Giant Fringehead?

Once the boss goes down, you can proceed deeper into Mureau Temple and pick up the blue orb that Muna was searching for. You'll also receive meat from the boss, which sells for a solid amount at Bancho Grill and helps offset those gear upgrade costs from before the fight.
