Deadlock received its City Never Sleeps update on September 29, 2026, and calling it a patch undersells it. Six new heroes, a ground-up visual rebuild of the New York map, an entirely new neutral enemy roster, a limited-time merchant selling cursed items, and a HUD that now tells you things you used to have to guess. The game that launched on September 29 plays noticeably differently from the one that existed the day before. Here's everything you need to know.
Valve is releasing all six heroes over three weeks, not all at once. Players vote on the release order in the pregame lobby, with the first hero dropping October 2 and two more following every Tuesday and Friday at 2:00 PM PT after that. Valve hasn't published ability kits for any of them yet, so what we know comes from their official tags and visual descriptions.
| Hero | Tags | Concept |
|---|---|---|
| Nurse Harrow | Strict, Terrifying, Saviour | A needle-wielding nurse with potential support and damage overlap |
| Rat King | Scrappy, Regal, Tenacious | A community fan concept turned full hero, wearing a crown |
| Solomon | Strategist, Grandmaster, Checkmate | A chess-themed hero who floats above the ground |
| Deadman Danny | Reckless, High-Flying, Explosive | A skeleton riding a rocket launcher |
| Baba | Cackling, Beady, Hexing | An elderly witch described as Home Alone 2's pigeon lady but actually evil |
| Violet | Expressive, Nimble, Creative | A painter who fights with a brush, the first of her kind in Deadlock |
Voting happens in the new pregame lobby before each match. The winning team's votes count double, and your first win of the day also doubles your vote weight. Once the first hero releases, playing earns you Hero Priority Tokens that help you access new characters faster. Campaign Posters let you publicly back whichever hero you want next.
Here's the full release schedule based on the Tuesday and Friday cadence:
| Release Slot | Date | Time (PT) | Time (UTC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hero 1 | Friday, Oct 2 | 2:00 PM | 21:00 |
| Hero 2 | Tuesday, Oct 6 | 2:00 PM | 21:00 |
| Hero 3 | Friday, Oct 9 | 2:00 PM | 21:00 |
| Hero 4 | Tuesday, Oct 13 | 2:00 PM | 21:00 |
| Hero 5 | Friday, Oct 16 | 2:00 PM | 21:00 |
| Hero 6 | Tuesday, Oct 20 | 2:00 PM | 21:00 |
The Cursed Apple got a full visual rebuild. Before City Never Sleeps, the three lanes looked similar enough that newer players struggled to orient themselves mid-match. Now each lane has a distinct name, three themed zones, and its own neutral enemy type. The minimap labels every location, so pinging an enemy position actually means something.

Broadway lane, Times Square zone
Broadway (blue lane) runs through Uptown, Times Square, and Downtown. Its neutral enemy is the Specimen, an occult-science hybrid with severed limbs that crawl independently.
Greenwich (green lane) passes Umbria University, Central Park, and the Brownstones. Central Park is home to the Hangman's Elm, a tree supposedly standing for around 300 years. The lane neutral here is Past Dues, a book-themed creature tied to the university's bibliomancy program.
York (yellow lane) covers the Stock Exchange, Old Fairfax Factories, and Seaport Dock at Pier 16. It's the only lane with two neutral types: Gutter Ghouls, which are physical manifestations of discarded dark thoughts shaped like trash bags, and Barrel Mimics, explosive barrels that are very much alive.
If you want a deeper understanding of how these lane changes affect movement and control, the Deadlock laning guide covering solo lanes, duo coordination, and wave control is worth reading alongside this one.
The back alleys between the main lanes are now split into four distinct districts, each with its own neutral enemies and at least one reason to visit.
| District | Neutral Enemies | Notable Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Theater District | Stage Hands | Haunted stage environment |
| Chinatown District | Crabbage Pots, Festival Spirits | Bell Tower objective |
| Haunted Lot District | Shrooms | Demonic mushroom encounters |
| Plaza District | Underhands | Sunken Plaza objective |
Chinatown is the busiest district by content: two neutral types and the Bell Tower make it worth checking on your rotations. The Plaza District sits directly above the update's riskiest soul farming location.
The Sunken Plaza sits beneath the main square of the Plaza District. Going deeper cuts you off from outside sound and drains your stamina. The soul reward is substantial, but escaping a fight down there is genuinely harder than on the surface.
The Bell Tower in Chinatown holds a concentrated soul bounty at its top. Collecting it rings the bell across the entire map, announcing your position to both teams. Farm it when enemies are dead or pushed far out, or expect a fight at the top.
The Broker is a temporary merchant who appears somewhere in New York around the 30-minute mark of a match. His location shifts between appearances because, per the game's lore, trading demonic items is illegal in the city. After his first stock, new Corrupted Items restock roughly every 15 minutes.

The Broker's corrupted item shop
He trades high-tier items for Corrupted versions that have stronger stats but come with a random negative effect. The key mechanic: every Corrupted Item's drawback is identical for all players in that match. If you see the penalty on your own Corrupted item, you know the exact weakness of any opponent who buys the same one.
Valve's own examples from the update page include Corrupted Ricochet and Corrupted Rapid Recharge.
The mistake most players make with Corrupted Items is treating the drawback as purely negative. Because the penalty is shared across the lobby, you can build around it and punish enemies who don't.
The health bar overhaul is the single most impactful readability change. Enemy bars now show player names, real-time health values, stamina status, critical health indicators, Rejuvenator availability, and ultimate readiness. You used to guess whether an enemy had their ultimate up. Now you don't have to.
For a full breakdown of how to use these mid-game information advantages, the Deadlock mid game guide covering rotations, objectives, and builds covers the decision-making layer that these HUD changes directly support.
The new Popular Items tab pulls live player data to show the most-purchased items for your current hero, including when in the match players typically buy them. Item Filters let you narrow by stat type, and you can combine filters. Builds now support copy and paste. The 1 through 6 keys navigate shop tabs by default.
You can also view the kill feed, incoming chat, and scoreboard without leaving the shop, which removes one of the more annoying friction points from the previous version.
Over 15,000 new and updated pings were added, plus more than 10,000 non-ping voice lines. Pre-match hero conversations grew from around 700 to approximately 1,500. A new Dialogue Player lets you browse every voice line in the game directly from the menu. Ability pings now show live cooldown information, and you can ping items to signal intent to buy or confirm ownership.
City Never Sleeps adds a dedicated accessibility section covering visuals, audio, and controls:
The Sandbox mode received a full set of testing tools that make it actually useful for build comparison:
First spawns on crates and neutrals in Sandbox and Explore NYC now happen at 5 seconds instead of 30, which removes the annoying wait at the start of every test session.
Deadlock moved to the latest version of Source 2 with this update. Abilities and items now activate the instant you press the button rather than waiting for the next input window, which makes the controls feel noticeably tighter.
A few specific changes worth knowing:
Twelve heroes received new footstep sounds: Billy, Mina, Drifter, Silver, Victor, Venator, Apollo, Graves, Celeste, Doorman, Paige, and Rem.
City Never Sleeps moved the game to a new Source 2 build, which breaks older mods and cached shaders. Work through these steps in order:
City Never Sleeps changes enough of the game's fundamentals that guides written before September 29 are partially outdated. The new district layout, Haunt locations, and HUD information all shift how you should be making decisions in the early and mid game. If you're building your knowledge base around the updated version of the game, the full Deadlock strategy guide collection covers laning, rotations, hero-specific play, and map navigation with the current state of the game in mind.
