Introduction

Larian Studios set a new bar for the RPG genre with Divinity: Original Sin 2, a game that treats player freedom as a core design principle rather than a marketing bullet point. Every choice carries weight, every NPC has a story, and the turn-based combat rewards creative thinking over button-mashing. This is the kind of party-based RPG that ruins other games for you.

Overview

Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition is a top-down, party-based RPG set in the world of Rivellon, where the Divine is dead and a creeping force called the Void threatens to consume everything. Players take on the role of a Sourcerer, someone capable of wielding a dangerous and forbidden magic, navigating a world that actively responds to who and what they are. The Definitive Edition refines an already exceptional game with rewritten third-act content, new journal features, and performance improvements across all platforms.

The scope here is hard to overstate. Rivellon is a world where you can talk to animals, recruit the undead as companions, ignite oil slicks to trap enemies in fire, and murder a quest-giver mid-conversation without the game grinding to a halt. That last point matters more than it sounds. Most RPGs quietly wall off sections when you make inconvenient choices. This one lets you keep going.

Gameplay and mechanics

The combat system is the heart of the experience, and it earns its reputation. With over 200 skills spread across 12 skill schools, builds range from glass-cannon pyromancers to tanky warfare knights to hybrid summoners that let conjured creatures do the heavy lifting. The elemental interaction system means the battlefield is always changing: rain spells create puddles, lightning electrifies them, fire evaporates them into steam clouds that block line of sight.

Key mechanics at a glance:

  • Elemental surface interactions (fire, water, poison, oil, electricity)
  • Action point economy with initiative-based turn order
  • Source points as a limited high-power resource
  • Dual-wielding, ranged, and spellcasting hybrid builds
  • Height advantage system affecting accuracy and damage

The AI is genuinely threatening. Enemies use the same tools available to players, which means they will drop poison barrels, teleport your characters into lava, and chain-stun your party if you leave an opening. Tactician and Honor mode difficulties push this further, with Honor mode limiting the run to a single save file.

Who are you playing as?

Character creation offers 6 pre-written origin characters, each with their own backstory, personal quests, and unique dialogue options that other characters simply cannot access. Fane is an undead scholar searching for answers about his people's extinction. Lohse is a human bard haunted by a demon. The Red Prince is a lizard aristocrat with plans far bigger than any party he travels with. Each origin character changes how NPCs react, which quests appear, and how certain story beats land.

Players can also create a custom character from scratch, choosing from Human, Lizard, Elf, Dwarf, or Undead races. Elves eat body parts to gain memories. Undead characters can pickpocket NPCs by playing dead. Race is not cosmetic here.

Multiplayer and replayability

The game supports up to 4-player co-op, both online and in local split-screen. Each player controls their own origin character and can pursue personal quests independently, which creates genuine friction when party members have conflicting goals. One player might be trying to broker peace with a faction while another has already killed their leader. That tension is a feature, not a bug.

Game Master Mode adds a separate layer of replayability, letting one player build and run custom campaigns for others using a set of in-game tools. The Steam Workshop library has expanded this significantly, with community-made campaigns available for download.
