To unlock Mystic Spearhand in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you just need to finish Monster Culling, go back to Melve, help fight off the dragon attacking the town, then ask Sigurd about his manner of fighting. After that it’s 200 Discipline at any Vocation Guild. Capcom’s own trailer post names Sigurd as the vocation’s maister.

Key takeaways

  • Finish Monster Culling, wait a few days, then take the oxcart from Vernworth back to Melve.
  • Help drive off the dragon, ask Sigurd about his manner of fighting, then pay 200 Discipline at a Vocation Guild.
  • If you miss him, he’s in the Coastal Hut in Harve Village, and later at Dragonsbreath Tower.

How do you unlock Mystic Spearhand, step by step?

GamesRadar’s unlock guide, Game8, RPG Site and the Fextralife wiki all run this in the same order. You can do it early, too. RPG Site says Monster Culling is the only real prerequisite.

  1. Get Monster Culling from Captain Brant in Vernworth. Fextralife says it opens after Seat of the Sovran, and that Brant is at The Stardrop Inn at night.
  2. Finish it, report back to Brant, then let a few days pass. A bench, a camp or an inn all work.
  3. Take the oxcart from the north side of Vernworth to Melve. Arriving starts Readvent of Calamity, with a dragon attacking the town.
  4. Fight alongside the townsfolk until the dragon flies off. You don’t have to kill it.
  5. Look around the battlefield for Sigurd. He wears a hood and has a double-ended spear on his back. GGRecon’s writer found him by the well.
  6. Ask his name and about his manner of fighting. That unlocks the vocation.
  7. Go to any Vocation Guild and pay 200 Discipline to change.

The only real argument is over timing. GGRecon says getting Monster Culling is enough, while GamesRadar, Game8 and RPG Site say finish it, and GamesRadar adds several days on top. Do the longer version and you’re covered. Game8 also has a handy tell: you’re ready once you can’t Ferrystone to Melve any more.

What if you missed Sigurd in Melve?

He goes home, basically. PC Gamer says he stays in Melve until Ulrika leaves as part of Readvent of Calamity. After that he’s in the Coastal Hut on the eastern side of Harve Village, and GGRecon, Fextralife and Windows Central back that up. Ask him the same question there.

What has to happen first is less clear. GamesRadar thinks you still need to have fought the Melve dragon. Fextralife ties it to Harve being rebuilt, which comes from finishing Scaly Invaders, and GGRecon says some players needed that quest but its writer didn’t. I’d do both before making the trip.

The last resort is Dragonsbreath Tower, southwest of Bakbattahl in Battahl. Wccftech warns Readvent of Calamity stops being available at a certain point in the story, and it and Fextralife both say Sigurd can still give you the vocation at the tower. Windows Central suggests at least level 20, ideally 30, and warns there’s no campsite on the way.

Should you kill the dragon at Melve?

You don’t need to, and I wouldn’t go out of my way. RPG Site and Game8 say killing it gets you Paladin’s Enigmata early, the tome that teaches the maister skill Wild Furie. RPG Site says to use Melve’s ballista.

Fextralife’s Sigurd page warns the other way: kill it and his dialogue can lock, so you get the vocation but not Wild Furie until a narrow endgame window. The slower route avoids that. Drive the dragon off, then help Sigurd finish it at Dragonsbreath Tower and he hands you the tome.

Game8, Windows Central and AllThings. How agree on that route, and Game8 says to keep him alive for it. Capcom describes Wild Furie as a double made of magick that deals both magick and physical damage.

What does Mystic Spearhand actually do?

It’s a hybrid that fights with a Duospear and mixes melee with magick. Capcom’s Xbox Wire rundown says you twirl the spear to hit multiple foes and use magick to throw items or block an enemy’s movement. Only the Arisen can use it, so your pawn never will.

The basic plan is stop it, then hit it. Forbeding Bolt is free at rank 1 and stops a target moving, Scatering Bolt (150 Discipline) spreads that to nearby enemies, and Quik Fot (250) jumps you straight to anything they hit. Capcom’s Title Update 3.2 notes from September raised the damage of Magike Cut, Seching Blade and Magike Sperepelote against targets held that way.

Mirour Vesture (rank 3, 450 Discipline) is the skill to read up on, because 3.2 rewrote it and older guides still describe the old version. An uncharged cast only covers the Arisen. A charged cast covers your party and makes nearby enemies flinch. The barrier now lasts much longer in a fight, but it has durability and uses more stamina.

Switching also moves your stats. Fextralife and AllThings. How both list +100 stamina, +50 health, +50 strength, +50 magick and -15 defense, and Fextralife adds -15 magick defense, +20 knockdown power and -50 knockdown resistance. So you keep the barrier up and keep moving. Standing there trading hits is the wrong plan.

Dark Arisen owners get more. Bataille Twinne (2,500 Discipline) conjures a shade of you that attacks, and Bataille Idole (5,000) is the stronger form. Both come from an Obelisk in Norgan, and AllThings. How says you need to bring an offering flame.

Is Mystic Spearhand worth switching to?

Worth trying? Yes, easily. It’s 200 Discipline once, and Game8 and Gamepressure both say switching between vocations you own is free after that. Gamepressure says you get basic gear when you change, and Fextralife lists the Mystic Spearhand set, starting with the Initiate’s Blade. So you can test it without buying anything.

Worth staying on? Depends what you want. Capcom sold it as “a great all-rounder”. Game8 calls its damage relatively low and builds it as a boss freezer around Rhewynt, a 68,000 G duospear Fextralife lists as endgame only. AllThings. How says it runs on sustained pressure over burst. If you want big hits, I’d pick something else.

I’d stay on it to keep a party alive. The Daemon’s Corral walkthrough picks it as the strongest Arisen choice for that dungeon, because the barrier can cover everyone in a tight room. So it’s a support job with a spear. Fine if that’s what you came for.

If you do stay, I’d buy the Percipient Blade first. Game8 lists it at 9,900 G from Roderick’s Smithy with 165 Strength and Magick, against the Initiate’s Blade’s 120. Rhewynt gets you to 380 each, but it costs nearly seven times as much and you can’t buy it until the endgame.

FAQ

Can pawns use Mystic Spearhand?

No. It’s Arisen only, and Game8 says you can’t hire one from a Riftstone either.

How much Discipline does Mystic Spearhand cost?

200, according to Game8 and AllThings.How. GGRecon’s older guide says 150 and a Fextralife trophy note says 100, so bring 200.

Do you need Dark Arisen to unlock Mystic Spearhand?

No. The vocation is in the base game. The expansion adds extra skills through an Obelisk in Norgan.
