Dragon's Dogma 2's Dark Arisen expansion drops a frozen northern region called Norgan into the game, along with 12 new dungeon challenges and a separate main story questline. Getting into all of it runs through one NPC you already know: Captain Brant. Talk to him at the right time, pick the right dialogue option, and the content opens up. Miss either of those, and you'll be standing in Vernworth wondering why nothing has changed.

What do you need before starting Dark Arisen?

First, confirm the expansion is actually installed. Dark Arisen is paid DLC that requires the base game. On PC or console, check your game's add-ons section and install any pending content before doing anything else.

You do not need to finish the main story or roll a new character. Any existing save that has reached Vernworth during the early Seat of the Sovran story arc works fine. The one exception is significant: if your current save has already entered the Unmoored World, you cannot access the DLC on that file until you start New Game+.

How to find Captain Brant and start the DLC

Brant is inside The Stardrop Inn in Vernworth, but only at nighttime. If you arrive during the day, rest at a bench or pay for a room until the sun goes down, then head back inside.

Once the expansion is installed, Brant has two new conversation choices that don't appear in the base game:

Dialogue OptionQuest StartedRecommended LevelContent
"About the new Arisen…"Chilling Tidings40Norgan region and main DLC story
"About the uncovered ruins…"Lost Rites2012 new dungeon challenges

Pick based on what you want to tackle first. The two questlines are independent, so you can start one, make progress, and come back for the other.

How do you reach Norgan?

After selecting "About the new Arisen…", the Chilling Tidings quest points you toward investigating a creature that has crash-landed near Vermund. The trail leads southwest of Melve, through the Malachite Forest toward a waterfall clearing.

You'll encounter Pekdre along the route, a character connected to the fallen creature. Speak with him and follow his instructions to push the journey forward. The quest eventually puts you on a Griffin flight into Norgan, the snowy northern region that serves as the expansion's centrepiece.

If the route isn't obvious, open your journal, set Chilling Tidings as the active tracked objective, and follow the map marker.

What level should you be for Dark Arisen?

Here's the short answer: level 40 for Norgan and the main DLC content, level 20 for the first Lost Rites dungeons. Those are recommended levels, not hard gates, but the gap between recommended and reality matters more here than in most of the base game.

Before heading north, run through this checklist:

  • Upgrade your weapons and armour to the highest tier you can access
  • Bring a full stock of healing items and status curatives (Chilled is a real threat in Norgan)
  • Make sure your hired Pawns have vocations that complement yours
  • Check each Lost Rites dungeon's individual difficulty before committing

For a faster path to being genuinely ready for Norgan's toughest fights, the Dark Arisen get-overpowered-fast guide covers Offering Flames, relic gear, and the best early builds to hit that power threshold quickly.

How do the Lost Rites dungeons work?

The Lost Rites questline sends you after 12 challenge dungeons scattered across Vermund, Battahl, and Norgan. After completing the first dungeon, you receive the Proving Grounds Compass. Using it from your inventory marks all remaining dungeon locations on your map.

Some dungeons contain Spellseal Doors that stay locked until you've hit specific main story milestones. You can walk up to them early, but they won't open. For a full breakdown of which dungeons have these doors and how to clear every challenge, the Lost Rites dungeon guide has every location and unlock condition covered.

Common mistakes players make

  • Trying to start the DLC from the Unmoored World. You can't. Start New Game+ or use a different save.
  • Visiting Brant during the day. He only has the DLC dialogue options available at night.
  • Heading straight to Norgan at level 20. The first Lost Rites dungeon is manageable at that level, but Norgan proper at level 20 is a rough time.
  • Ignoring the Proving Grounds Compass. After that first dungeon, use the compass from your inventory to map everything out before exploring blind.

For everything else the expansion has to offer, from relic farming to Obelisk locations and vocation skill unlocks, the full Dragon's Dogma 2 Dark Arisen guide collection has you covered.
