EA FC 27 Best Center Backs: Top CBs for Career Mode and FUT
Find the best center backs in EA FC 27 for every squad type, from elite 89-rated starters to high-potential wonderkids under 80.
Pick the wrong midfielder and you will feel it immediately. With manual defending now requiring your CM to actively occupy passing lanes rather than relying on AI tackles, the attributes behind a player's overall rating matter more than ever. EA Sports FC 27 has five midfielders sitting at 90 overall, a mix of men's and women's players across every role, and a Career Mode wonderkid list that goes all the way down to teenagers with 24 points of growth potential. Here's the short answer: Rodri leads the official rankings, Jude Bellingham is the most complete all-rounder, and Pedri is the gold standard for Career Mode.
Five players reach 90 overall in the midfielder pool. After that, the 88s and 89s cover very different jobs, so the table below is the starting point, not the finish line.
| Rank | Player | Pos | OVR | PAC | SHO | PAS | DRI | DEF | PHY |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rodri | CDM | 90 | 62 | 78 | 86 | 81 | 85 | 81 |
| 2 | Michael Olise | RM | 90 | 83 | 82 | 89 | 91 | 47 | 69 |
| 3 | Pedri | CM | 90 | 76 | 75 | 89 | 91 | 77 | 75 |
| 4 | Vitinha | CM | 90 | 72 | 81 | 88 | 91 | 75 | 70 |
| 5 | Jude Bellingham | CAM | 90 | 79 | 86 | 83 | 88 | 79 | 85 |
| 6 | Lionel Messi | CAM | 89 | 76 | 87 | 89 | 90 | 33 | 63 |
| 7 | Bruno Fernandes | CAM | 89 | 67 | 85 | 92 | 85 | 68 | 75 |
| 8 | João Neves | CM | 88 | 72 | 75 | 84 | 87 | 86 | 82 |
| 9 | Joshua Kimmich | CDM | 88 | 71 | 73 | 90 | 84 | 81 | 79 |
| 10 | Declan Rice | CDM | 88 | 72 | 75 | 86 | 81 | 85 | 84 |
| 11 | Luis Díaz | LM | 88 | 82 | 82 | 83 | 87 | 44 | 74 |
| 12 | Federico Valverde | CM | 87 | 90 | 84 | 83 | 81 | 81 | 85 |
| 13 | Nicolò Barella | CM | 87 | 77 | 78 | 84 | 86 | 81 | 72 |
| 14 | Jamal Musiala | CAM | 87 | 79 | 81 | 79 | 90 | 62 | 65 |
| 15 | Fabián Ruiz | CM | 86 | 60 | 77 | 83 | 82 | 77 | 73 |
The table makes one thing obvious: overall rating is a blunt instrument. Federico Valverde sits at 87 overall but owns 90 PAC and 93 Sprint Speed, making him faster than any other midfielder in the top 15. Bruno Fernandes is only 89 overall yet carries the highest passing rating in the entire FC 27 database at 92 PAS. The number on the card tells you the tier; the attributes tell you the job.
Rodri is the highest-rated holding midfielder at 90 overall, backed by 85 DEF, 86 PAS, and detailed attributes of 93 Short Passing, 91 Long Passing, and 88 Standing Tackle. His weakness is 62 PAC, which becomes a problem if he gets pulled wide or caught in transition.
Joshua Kimmich (88 overall) is the better distributor of the two, with 90 PAS that includes 92 Crossing, 91 Short Passing, and 93 Long Passing. Trust me on this one: if your system asks the CDM to start attacks rather than just break them up, Kimmich is worth the trade-off in defensive output.
Declan Rice (88 overall) offers the most mobile defensive profile of the three. His 85 DEF and 84 PHY are paired with 94 Stamina, which matters when the role demands repeated recovery runs across 90 minutes rather than anchoring a single zone.
| Player | OVR | PAS | DEF | PHY | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rodri | 90 | 86 | 85 | 81 | Possession control, sitting deep |
| Kimmich | 88 | 90 | 81 | 79 | Distribution-first systems |
| Rice | 88 | 86 | 85 | 84 | High-energy pressing, transitions |
Pedri and Vitinha share 90 overall and both hit 91 DRI, making them the two best possession-oriented CMs in the game. Pedri has 89 PAS and 77 DEF; Vitinha sits at 88 PAS and 81 SHO, giving him a small edge if you want the CM to threaten from distance.
João Neves (88 overall) is the one to pick if you want a CM who can actually defend. His 86 DEF is higher than either Pedri or Vitinha, and 82 PHY makes him a genuine two-way option rather than a possession carrier who disappears when the other team has the ball.
Alexia Putellas (91 CM) is the highest-rated midfielder in FC 27 regardless of gender. If your squad links allow her, she belongs in the same conversation as Pedri and Vitinha, not in a separate bracket.
Jude Bellingham (90 CAM) is the most complete option at the position. Every one of his six face stats reaches at least 79, combining 86 SHO, 88 DRI, 79 DEF, and 85 PHY. His alternate CM position is genuinely useful: tested deeper in a box-to-box role, the combination of 81 Standing Tackle, 85 Sliding Tackle, and 93 Stamina holds up far better than you would expect from a primary CAM.
Lionel Messi (89 CAM) is the specialist creator. His 90 DRI and 87 SHO are elite, but 33 DEF means you are carrying a passenger when the opposition has the ball. Use him if your system protects him; do not use him if your midfield already has a ball-winner.
Bruno Fernandes (89 CAM) is the best pure passer in FC 27. His 92 PAS includes 95 Vision, 94 Short Passing, and 94 Long Passing. The tradeoff is 67 PAC, so positioning and passing angles have to do the work that pace cannot.
Michael Olise (90 RM) is six overall points clear of the next right midfielder in the database. His 89 PAS, 91 DRI, 94 Vision, and 82 SHO give him multiple ways to affect a game, and his alternate CAM position opens up a natural second deployment option when you want to move him inside.
Luis Díaz (88 LM) leads the left midfield rankings with 87 DRI and 82 SHO, making him a direct option rather than a traditional wide midfielder who just crosses. Grimaldo (85 LM) is the opposite profile: lower pace but 87 PAS for squads that want left-sided distribution rather than direct running.
Michael Olise is the headline mover, jumping from 86 to 90 overall, a four-point rise that reflects his performances across the 2025-26 season. João Neves and Luis Díaz each gained three points, while Bruno Fernandes rose two to 89. On the other side, Federico Valverde dropped from 89 to 87 despite still having one of the most appealing stat profiles in the game for Ultimate Team box-to-box play. Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala each fell one point.
Chemistry forces you to think about league links before overall ratings. Here is where the top names sit.
Premier League: Rodri (Manchester City, 90 CDM), Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd, 89 CAM), Declan Rice (Arsenal, 88 CDM). Three different midfield jobs, all in the same league.
LALIGA: Pedri (Barcelona, 90 CM), Bellingham (Real Madrid, 90 CAM), Valverde (Real Madrid, 87 CM). The best midfield depth of any single league in FC 27.
Bundesliga: Olise (Bayern, 90 RM), Kimmich (Bayern, 88 CDM), Díaz (Bayern, 88 LM). All three Bayern midfielders sit at 88 or above.
Ligue 1: Vitinha (PSG, 90 CM), João Neves (PSG, 88 CM), Fabián Ruiz (PSG, 86 CM). PSG owns the top three spots in the entire division.
Serie A: Barella (87 CM), McTominay (86 CM), Dybala (85 CAM). The ceiling is lower than the other four leagues, but Barella's 86 DEF and 84 DRI make him a strong balanced option.
Nobody is buying Rodri or Bellingham in the first week. Coins are tight and the meta is still forming. Here's the short answer for each role.
Budget CDMs to target:Morten Hjulmand, Amadou Onana, Denis Zakaria, and Victor Froholdt. Prioritise height (ideally above 6'1") because taller CDMs intercept through balls more consistently in FC 27's updated defensive system. Pace above 70 is the floor; anything lower and you will get exposed on the break.
Budget CMs to target:Mamadou Sangaré, Oihan Sancet, and Nerea Eizagirre. For a two-CM formation, split the roles: one attack-focused and one defensive, rather than trying to find two identical box-to-box options.
Budget CAMs to target:Christian Pulisic, Dani Olmo, and Morgan Gibbs-White. The CAM in a standard 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 needs to be your second or third scoring threat, so shooting capability matters more than pure creativity at this stage.
The mistake most players make with budget midfielders is chasing the highest overall available rather than matching the card to the role. A 82-rated CDM who is 6'2" with Intercept and Anticipate PlayStyles will outperform a 84-rated CDM who is built for possession in the same position.
For Career Mode, potential growth matters as much as current rating. Only players 25 or under at the start of the 26-27 season are worth targeting for long-term development.
| Player | Age | OVR | Potential | Growth | Club |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pedri | 23 | 90 | 93 | +3 | FC Barcelona |
| João Neves | 21 | 88 | 92 | +4 | Paris SG |
| Lily Yohannes | 19 | 80 | 90 | +10 | OL Lyonnes |
| Korbin Shrader | 22 | 83 | 90 | +7 | OL Lyonnes |
| Julie Swierot | 20 | 77 | 89 | +12 | OL Lyonnes |
| Warren Zaïre-Emery | 20 | 83 | 89 | +6 | Paris SG |
| Kika Nazareth | 23 | 83 | 89 | +6 | FC Barcelona |
| Felix Nmecha | 25 | 85 | 88 | +3 | Borussia Dortmund |
| Enzo Fernández | 25 | 86 | 88 | +2 | Chelsea |
| Enzo dos Santos | 17 | 61 | 85 | +24 | Borussia Dortmund |
| Denis Sahin | 18 | 56 | 80 | +24 | GC Zürich |
Best for top-of-the-table teams: Pedri is already a 90 with 93 potential, making him the safest elite signing in Career Mode. João Neves adds 92 potential with genuine defensive capability that Pedri lacks. If you can afford both, the midfield is sorted for a decade.
Best for mid-table teams: Julie Swierot offers the biggest growth jump in the list at +12 points to reach 89 potential. Lily Yohannes starts higher at 80 with a 90 ceiling, making her the more complete day-one option for a team that needs production immediately alongside development.
Best for lower-league teams: Enzo dos Santos (61 to 85, +24) and Denis Sahin (56 to 80, +24) are the two highest-growth options in the entire CM pool. Both are cheap to sign and can either be sold for profit or developed into genuine starters as you climb through the divisions.
