Fortnite Guide: How to Hit Opponents With Lancehead Clip

The John Wick Contract quests in Fortnite are a great time, but one in particular trips up a lot of players: hitting opponents with a Lancehead Clip after reloading. The mechanic is not explained anywhere in-game, and the number of wrong assumptions floating around about how it works makes it even more confusing. Here's exactly what you need to do.

What is a Lancehead Clip in Fortnite?

A Lancehead Clip is the magazine used in the Lancehead Pistol family of weapons. The specific gun you want for this quest is the 9MM Baba Yaga Pistol, a Mythic-tier weapon tied directly to the John Wick content. When you reload this weapon with at least one bullet already spent, your character physically throws the ejected clip as a projectile. Land that clip on an enemy and the quest registers a hit.

One thing worth clearing up before you waste time: you do not need to empty the entire magazine before reloading. Fire at least one shot, then reload. That is all the game requires.

warning
Using any other pistol will not work. The clip-throw mechanic is exclusive to the 9MM Baba Yaga Pistol, so do not attempt this quest with a standard sidearm.

Where to find the 9MM Baba Yaga Pistol

The weapon does not spawn in regular loot pools. You have to earn it through a specific in-match event tied to John Wick's dog.

  • Drop at Sinister Strip or The Battlewoods.
  • As you get close, listen for distant barking. That audio cue confirms you are in the right area.
  • Security Guards are protecting a dog cage nearby. Take them out.
  • Once the guards are down, interact with the cage to Unlock it.
  • The Mythic 9MM Baba Yaga Pistol drops as your reward.
tip
Head to this location early in the match before other players grab the weapon. The barking audio is your fastest way to locate the cage without having to check both named spots.

How to hit opponents with the Lancehead Clip after reloading

Once you have the pistol, the execution comes down to positioning and timing.

  1. Load into a match and secure the 9MM Baba Yaga Pistol from Sinister Strip or The Battlewoods.
  2. Fire at least one shot from the weapon to partially empty the clip.
  3. Close the distance to an opponent until you are roughly 2 to 5 meters away.
  4. Face directly at the enemy so your crosshair is on them.
  5. Press reload.
  6. Your character automatically throws the spent clip at the opponent.

Repeat this process twice and the quest is finished, counting as one of four completed John Wick Contracts.

important
Distance matters more than most players expect. Standing too far away when you reload means the clip will not connect. Stay within that 2-to-5-meter window and aim directly at the target before pressing reload.

Why is this quest confusing for so many players?

Three things tend to go wrong for players attempting this:

Loading table...

After testing this against both Security Guards and real players, the distance requirement is the one that catches people off guard most often. Guards near the dog cage are actually a convenient target for the first hit since you are already fighting them to unlock the cage.

tip
You can use Security Guards as your targets for both clip hits. You do not need to wait for a PvP encounter, which makes this quest much faster to complete in a single match.

Tips for completing the quest faster

  • Use Security Guards as your targets. They spawn reliably near the cage and you are already engaging them to get the weapon. Two hits on guards and you are done.
  • Do not panic-empty the clip. One shot fired is all you need before reloading. Spraying the full magazine means a longer reload animation and more exposure.
  • Stick to one named location. Both Sinister Strip and The Battlewoods have the cage, but splitting your attention between them wastes drop time. Pick one and commit.
  • Prioritize this early. The Baba Yaga Pistol is Mythic and other players will be hunting it. Land fast and move with purpose.
