God of War Sons of Sparta Review
6.5/10
Sons of Sparta is the gaming equivalent of a well-executed cover song. It hits all the right notes, sounds great, but doesn't add anything new to the original composition. For $30, you're getting a competent Metroidvania with God of War branding, and that calculation matters. If you're starving for more Kratos lore and can forgive the lack of innovation, this prequel offers a few hours of solid platforming wrapped in stunning pixel art. The brother dynamic genuinely works, and seeing a younger, less hardened Kratos adds worthwhile context to his character arc. That said, genre veterans will find nothing here they haven't experienced before, and technical issues undercut what should be a polished experience. This feels like a project that needed either a smaller price tag or bigger ambitions. It's proof that talented indie studios can play in AAA sandboxes, but also proof that brand recognition alone doesn't make a game essential. Wait for a sale unless you're a completionist who needs every piece of Kratos' story.
