Graveyard Keeper 2 front-loads iron deposits near your starting area, which makes the early game feel generous. The catch is that none of those surface nodes respawn. Once you've stripped the rocks around the Inquisition Base, you're looking at a resource drought unless you know exactly where to look next and, more importantly, how to set up the zombie mine that solves the problem permanently. This guide covers every stage of that process.
What do you need before you can mine iron?
The first thing most players run into is finding a shiny iron rock and having no mining prompt appear. That's a Metallurgy Mastery gate, not a quest lock. You need a Metallurgy rating of 3 before the game lets you touch iron ore.
The fastest way to hit that threshold:
- Craft and equip a Bronze Hammer. Equipping it gives +2 Metallurgy Mastery.
- Unlock the first Metallurgy Perk on the tech tree, which adds +1 Mastery.
- Complete Metallurgy Inspirations to earn that perk. These include destroying broken barrels, mining Copper Nuggets, and crafting Bronze items.
You don't actually mine with the hammer. It just sits in your equipment slot and boosts your stat. The Pickaxe is still what you swing.

Graveyard Keeper 2 Guide: How to Find Iron Ore
Where to find iron ore surface nodes
Surface iron appears as large, shiny rocks scattered across several zones. Every single one is finite, so treat them as a head start rather than a long-term supply. Here's where to look:
Each rock typically yields 6 ore across two breaks, and unlocking the Miner perk improves that number. Once you've exhausted the nodes around your base, you'll need to push into the Forest and the Swamp, both of which require story progress to reach.
If you'd rather skip the prospecting entirely, rebuilding the smithy shop in town lets you buy iron directly from vendors including the Trademaster, Bishop, and Harold.

Graveyard Keeper 2 Guide: How to Find Iron Ore
How do you smelt iron ore into ingots?
Raw Iron Ore isn't directly usable for most recipes. You need to process it at a Furnace to produce Iron Ingots. The recipe is straightforward:
- 4 Iron Ingots: 3 Iron Ore + 30 Fuel
Fuel consumption adds up quickly here. If you're not already managing your firewood supply, check out the guide to getting fuel in Graveyard Keeper 2 before you start a large smelting queue.

Smelting takes time, so the practical move is to queue up a large batch and assign a zombie worker to monitor the Furnace. With a porter zombie handling resource transport and enough chest space nearby, the smelting runs without you babysitting it.
Later in the game, a Smithy in the Factory beneath your base becomes available as a second smelting location, using Coal and Iron Ore as inputs.
How to unlock the Forest Iron Mine
This is where iron goes from scarce to unlimited, but the unlock chain is the longest part of the process.
Getting into the Forest
The Forest is gated behind story progress. After the first battle and sufficient Town Rank, you can reach the Forest Outpost guards west of the Village. To get past them:
- Speak to Januarius in the Village Tavern and ask Jully about the forest.
- Repair the Royal Postbox next to the tavern and collect the Temporary Head of the Village Certificate.
- Return the certificate to the tavern and request a Forest Pass.
- Show the Forest Pass to the Outpost guards.
Later in the game, there's a second route through the Factory and underground mines, but you need the Forest access first.
Opening the mine entrance
Once you're in the Forest, the mine entrance is blocked. Here's the full unlock sequence:
- Clear the Forest Outpost and follow the road toward Hans's camp, located before the bridge to the Swamp.
- Complete the bandit introduction to start the "Can't See The Forest for the Iron" quest, which reveals the blocked mine entrance.
- Find Larry at home or at the Inquisition Base.
- Select the "Miners' Treasure" dialogue and give him 1 Simple Candle (crafted at a Formulation Bench using 2 Beeswax and 1 Flax Thread, unlocked via Church Lighting I tech).
- Follow the nighttime scene where Larry impersonates the bandits' old leader, Robert.
- Return to the bandits' camp and complete the exchange to receive 1 Dynamite and the Dynamite technology.
- Take the Dynamite to the Blockage at the Forest mine entrance and use it with Building Mastery 8.
Clearing the blockage opens both the entrance and exit of the mine.
How to set up infinite iron with zombies
The Forest Mine has one major problem: deadly fumes make it fatal for living characters. You can't mine in there yourself. This is exactly what zombie workers are for.
First, unlock Zombie Mining on the Metallurgy Tech Tree. Then, inside the mine, build the following:
- Zombie Miner Station: 2 Wooden Planks + 4 Bricks
- Porter Station: 2 Wooden Planks + 4 Bricks
You can also build a second Zombie Miner station to double your output.
Assign a zombie to each station:
- The Miner zombie needs a Pickaxe equipped. An Iron Pickaxe is better than a basic one. Load this zombie with red skulls so you can unlock the Zombie Miner Perk, which improves efficiency.
- The Porter zombie needs no special stats. It carries Iron Ore and Coal from the mine back to your base automatically.
The mine produces 1 Iron Ore and 2 Coal per cycle, indefinitely. There's also an Old Mine work zone with its own build desk inside the mine for additional setup options.
