Polished Bronze is the material that quietly blocks half your progression in Graveyard Keeper 2. The Writing Desk, Furnace II, the Weaving Loom, and several other stations all demand it, and the game gives you almost no hint about where the recipe actually lives. It is not unlocked through Woodworking, even though the craft runs at a Woodworking Workbench. It sits five nodes deep in the Metallurgy branch, and even once you own it, two more gates stand between you and the finished bar.

What do you actually need to craft Polished Bronze?

Three separate requirements must all be met before the craft button becomes usable. Miss any one of them and the window either shows a greyed-out button or refuses to display the recipe at all.

  • Bronze Polishing technology unlocked from the Metallurgy branch
  • A Tool Rack extension built next to your Woodworking Workbench
  • Building mastery of at least 5

The recipe itself converts 2 Bronze Detail, 2 Sand, and 1 Melted Fat into 2 Polished Bronze per craft. The bench runs the job in six seconds, costs 2 energy per tick, and returns 3 red in the process.

How to unlock the Bronze Polishing technology

The technology tree is where most players waste time. Because Polished Bronze is crafted at a woodworking bench, Woodworking II looks like the obvious unlock. It is not. Woodworking II costs 40 and 5 points and opens the Bronze Chisel, Furniture Kit I, and a second workbench. Useful things, but none of them are Polished Bronze.

The correct node is Bronze Polishing, which sits in the Metallurgy branch. Reaching it requires buying the four preceding nodes in order:

TechnologyCost
Bronze Works5
Bronze Melting10
Bronze Craft30
Bronze Forge20
Bronze Polishing30

That is 95 points into the Metallurgy line before the recipe becomes available. The Bronze Polishing purchase also hands over Bronze tools and Copper Trinkets recipes at the same time, so the spend covers more than one unlock.

Before you can access the Alchemy side of the tech tree at all, you need to advance the Plague Doctor's questline far enough to gain entry to the tower behind your house. Inside is the Alchemy Lab, and without completing that story beat, the Distillation Cube and the Alchemy, Distillation technology remain locked off entirely.

How to build the Tool Rack

The Tool Rack is a workbench extension, not a standalone building. It appears in the build menu under Workbench Extension and must be placed directly next to the Woodworking Workbench you plan to use. The technology behind it costs 35 points and requires Stone Basics and Woodworking I as prerequisites.

Building the extension takes 2 Wooden Planks, 4 Bronze Details, and 6 Bronze Nails. That is a meaningful bronze cost before you have made a single Polished Bronze bar, so plan your Bronze Detail supply accordingly. The Tool Rack is worth building early regardless, since 11 different recipes across the Woodworking Workbench and the Stonemason's Workbench require it, including Polished Stone and the Amateur Rod.

How to reach Building mastery 5

Building mastery is the orange track in your stats, and the craft requires exactly 5 to proceed. The window shows your current number against the requirement, but it does not explain how to raise it.

Axes and pickaxes both contribute to Building mastery while equipped. A Bronze Pickaxe gives +2 and a Bronze Axe gives +2, so equipping both puts you at 4 before spending a single perk point. The remaining point comes from the first Building Perk, earned by completing Building Inspirations such as chopping trees or splitting logs into firewood.

Shovels do nothing here. They feed the Farming track, not Building, so upgrading your shovel will not move the number.

Where to get each ingredient

Bronze Details

Bronze Detail is the cheapest part of this recipe. One Bronze Ingot produces 6 Bronze Details at any Wooden Anvil. Bronze Ingots come from a Furnace: 3 Bronze Scraps smelt into 3 ingots, or 3 Copper Nuggets plus 1 Tin produce 5 ingots. Fuel is required for smelting. Check out the guide to finding iron ore and smelting ingots for more on the furnace setup that feeds this entire chain.

Sand

Sand is the easiest ingredient on the list. The nearest deposits sit in the bottom left corner of your land, just south of the broken bridge. Equip a Shovel and dig directly from the pit. Each swing costs 1 energy and yields Sand, so eat food to keep your stamina topped up during longer sessions. Sand is also used in the Sluice Box to separate Tin, which then feeds back into Bronze Ingot production.

Melted Fat

This is the ingredient that stalls most players. Melted Fat is produced exclusively at the Distillation Cube inside the Alchemy Lab, with one exception: the Apothecary shop stocks 20 Melted Fat per tier once it exists in town, but that shop is a building you have to raise yourself, so it opens later than the recipe does.

To build a Distillation Cube, unlock Alchemy, Basic and Alchemy, Distillation from the tech tree, then construct the cube from 2 Wooden Planks, 2 Bronze Details, and 12 Bricks. Two recipes produce Melted Fat at the cube:

  • 1 Fat + 2 Clay Plates + 20 Fuel = 1 Melted Fat
  • 3 Seed Oil + 2 Clay Plates + 20 Fuel = 1 Melted Fat

Fat comes from corpse autopsies in the Morgue. Seed Oil is crafted at the Kitchen's Millstone from any seeds. Clay Plates are made at a Potter's Wheel from Clay. The Distillation Cube takes a few minutes per run, so queue it up and handle other tasks while it processes. Make sure you have enough firewood on hand before starting, since the process burns through fuel steadily. The guide to getting fuel in Graveyard Keeper 2 covers setting up a Firewood Shed to keep the Distillation Cube fed.

Can you buy Polished Bronze instead of crafting it?

Yes, once the relevant town buildings are standing. Three shops carry stock:

ShopStock per tier
Smithy10
Furniture Maker10
Jeweler20 (up to 50 at higher tiers)

All three are town buildings you construct and upgrade yourself, so this route opens later than the crafting recipe. If the Smithy is not built yet, the workbench is the only source.

What is Polished Bronze used for?

Eight buildings and several recipes consume it, and the two most impactful are the Writing Desk and Furnace II.

The Writing Desk costs 1 Polished Bronze and unlocks 24 recipes, including every prayer in the game, Clean Paper, Ink, Story, both notebooks, and both Science Kits. It is the cheapest Polished Bronze purchase relative to what it opens.

Furnace II costs 2 Polished Bronze plus 6 Polished Stone and 12 Bricks. It is the first furnace that can smelt Iron Ingots, which means the entire iron crafting system sits behind this single building.

The full list of buildings that require Polished Bronze:

  • Writing Desk (1)
  • Formulation Bench (1)
  • Embalming Table I (1)
  • Woodworking Workbench II (2)
  • Furnace II (2)
  • Weaving Loom (2)
  • Sewing Table (2)
  • Monument II (3)

Recipes that consume it include Bronze tools (1), Copper Trinkets (2), Amateur Rod (2), Starter Alchemist's Kit (1), and the broken bridge repair (1).
