Gray Zone Warfare is making its biggest leap yet with the Rogue Ops update (version 0.5), which officially moves the game from pre-alpha into Alpha. Seven new weapons, three enormous Tier 4 locations, a personal Hideout with crafting and drug smuggling, multiple character slots, and a reworked economy all arrive together. If you thought the 0.4 Spearhead update was substantial, Rogue Ops is a different scale entirely.

What are the 7 new weapons in update 0.5?

All seven additions are European platforms, a deliberate contrast to the Vietnam-era American guns that arrived with 0.4 Spearhead. Here's the short answer on each one.

FAMAS F1

The standout of the batch. The FAMAS F1 is a French bullpup chambered in 5.56mm with a rate of fire that tops out at 1,100 rounds per minute. That speed is managed through a dual fire-selector system: one selector inside the trigger guard toggles between safe, semi, and automatic, while a second selector behind the magazine switches the automatic position between three-round burst and full-auto. The base version uses proprietary 25-round magazines incompatible with AR-15 pattern rifles, but aftermarket mods can bring it close to the Valorisé standard with Picatinny rail support for modern optics.

Steyr AUG (A1 and A3)

The AUG arrives in two configurations. The A1 comes with an integral 1.5x scope and foregrip, while the A3 modernization adds Picatinny rails to the receiver and scope mount. Different barrel length options and the modular design give the AUG a versatility that rivals the M4A1 for build variety.

H&K G36

Germany's answer to a lighter service rifle, introduced in 1997. The base model carries a 480mm barrel, an integrated 3x scope, and a red dot on the carry handle. You can strip the optic system and replace it with Picatinny rails if you prefer your own glass. The G36K and G36C compact variants are also available for players who want a shorter package.

H&K G3

A 7.62x51mm battle rifle that has been in service since 1959. The delayed roller-locking system is less prone to fouling than a gas-operated action, which matters on a jungle island like Lamang. The base version available from traders comes with early wood furniture. Recoil is heavy in automatic fire, but ergonomic mods bring it in line with other modern rifles in the game. Treat the automatic fire position as decorative until you have those mods sorted.

H&K UMP

A .45 ACP submachine gun developed as an alternative to the MP5. It is lighter and more accurate at range than the MP5, but harder to control in automatic fire. The practical upside: almost all .45 ACP rounds in the game are subsonic, so pairing the UMP with a suppressor makes it the quietest option in Lamang for infiltration missions. Cheap .45 ACP availability from traders also keeps running costs low.

Benelli M4

The semi-automatic shotgun that was missing from the roster. The M4 uses a gas-operated action that automatically adjusts to different shell loads, which is why it earned a reputation for reliability that earlier semi-auto shotguns never managed. You can configure it as a compact breaching shorty or run a suppressor on the full-length barrel.

Glock 18C

A full-auto sidearm firing 1,200 rounds per minute. The C model has compensator slots in the slide and barrel for marginal control improvement. It is still a pistol, so keep expectations realistic outside close quarters. Best used as a secondary when your primary is a sniper rifle on long patrols.

Alongside the weapons, 370 new weapon parts arrive, including additional components for existing platforms like the AKS. Six special camouflage variants with low spawn rates are also in the world, along with 22 new reflex sights and two magnifiers at 4x and 6x. SP and HP ammunition now creates larger wounds than FMJ and AP rounds, so ammo selection carries more weight than before.

For context on which of these new guns are worth prioritizing alongside the existing meta, the Gray Zone Warfare best weapons tier list covers the Spearhead weapon rankings and will give you a baseline for comparison.

What are the 3 new Tier 4 locations?

Three major areas arrive with Rogue Ops, all classified as Tier 4. That means the AI enemies there are significantly more dangerous than what you find elsewhere on Lamang. High-end loot is the reward, but you need to be prepared.

Lakevale Sanctuary (Asylum)

An abandoned psychiatric facility with long corridors, cell blocks, a morgue, and interrogation rooms. The atmosphere draws from Silent Hill as a stated inspiration. The location tells more of Lamang's history through environmental detail, including traces of past events the developers describe as deliberately grim.

Northern Reach (Military Research Site)

A large military base sitting directly on the border of Ground Zero. This is the location to target for high-tier equipment, and the enemy quality reflects that. Expect well-trained AI in force.

RLSL-1 (Radio Observatory)

A decaying radar tower at the center of a large facility, with several bunkers beneath the main dish. High-end loot is available, but the location has more going on than a simple loot run.

Beyond the three major POIs, 15+ smaller locations fill out the map: hidden drug huts in the jungle, apartment buildings, Khmer temple ruins, Rocky City (a maze of tall rock formations connected by fallen tree trunks), and underground tunnels. The developers are also adding new environmental props, corpse variants, voice recordings, and televisions that react to player actions to make Lamang feel less like a map and more like a place.

A new three-tier hacking tool lets you bypass electronic locks and enter restricted areas. Traps and environmental puzzles are scattered across the island as well.

How does the new Hideout work?

The Hideout is the biggest new system in 0.5 and connects directly to the Rogue Ops storyline. It gets its own tab in the menu. At launch, three modules are available: a Chemistry Lab, an Electronics Workshop, and a Support Area, each with three upgrade levels. Materials come from looting Lamang or dismantling items, and further upgrades unlock additional blueprints.

The Chemistry Lab starts with legitimate work. Trader Lab Rat tasks you with producing medical morphine. After that, trader Vulture enters the picture and the business becomes considerably less legal. You produce narcotics, including heroin in different quality grades, and transport shipments across the map in a special backpack that visibly identifies you to other players as a smuggler.

Here's why that matters for PvP: trader Banshee notifies players from opposing factions about active smuggling missions and reveals the target region. Successful deliveries improve your Vulture reputation. Banshee rewards players who hunt and stop smugglers. On pure PvE servers, prepared AI groups fill the opposing role instead.

The Electronics Workshop produces hacking tools for bypassing locked doors in restricted areas. Trader Artisan uses the Hideout to let you examine and repurpose high-grade military technology, with particularly rare items sellable to unknown buyers on a black market.

Tracking Tags and Stims can no longer be bought from traders at all. Crafting them yourself is now the only option. Vulture has also been moved out of Combat Outposts and into the standard trader menu.

What else changes in update 0.5?

Multiple characters and split PvE/PvEvP progression

You can now maintain up to four separate characters across different factions and game modes. PvE and PvEvP progression are fully separated. Gear earned in PvE cannot be transferred into PvEvP, which closes off the strategy of safely stocking up equipment under low-risk conditions before taking it into the PvP-enabled world.

Economy and loot changes

High-value loot spawns less frequently across the map. Rare weapon configurations with low spawn rates are now in the world as loot. The economy adjustments are designed to make earned money feel more meaningful and progression more balanced.

Healing system updates

New icons and clearer visual effects make injury states easier to read. Medical items now have different application times, so two bandages that serve the same function may take different amounts of time to use in a firefight.

Technical upgrades

Rogue Ops upgrades the engine to Unreal Engine 5.7. Frame rates improve, HDR display support is added, AI behavior is smarter, and directional audio has been re-engineered. The suppression effect returns, designed to communicate incoming fire danger without blurring the full screen.

First soft wipe

Player currency and equipment reset with 0.5. Level progression, completed tasks, and vendor reputations carry over.

How to access the Rogue Ops Supporter Preview

The Supporter Preview requires the Supporter Edition of Gray Zone Warfare. Players on the base game, Tactical Edition, or Elite Edition can upgrade by paying the price difference on the Steam store page. Once you own the Supporter Edition:

  1. Open Steam
  2. Right-click Gray Zone Warfare in your Library
  3. Select Properties
  4. Go to Game Versions & Betas
  5. Select the supporter-preview branch
  6. Click Update to download version 0.5
  7. If the update option does not appear, restart Steam, switch to offline mode, then back online, and try again

Switching to the 0.5 branch means you cannot return to version 0.4.7.6.

If you are new to the game or returning after a break, the Gray Zone Warfare getting started with the Spearhead update guide covers the 0.4 foundations that Rogue Ops builds on, and the Gray Zone Warfare factions guide explains all three playable PMCs and the seven AI enemy groups before you commit a character slot to one.

Common mistakes to avoid in Rogue Ops

  • Running straight to Tier 4 locations undergeared. The Asylum, Northern Reach, and RLSL-1 have Level 4 AI. Check your kit before heading there.
  • Ignoring ammo type. SP and HP rounds now deal larger wounds than FMJ and AP. The ammo choice matters more than it did in 0.4.
  • Treating the Hideout as optional. Tracking Tags and Stims are no longer sold by traders. If you rely on those items, you need the Chemistry Lab running.
  • Smuggling with a full kit you cannot afford to lose. The smuggling backpack marks you as a target for Banshee-alerted players. The risk-reward structure is real.
