Dolphins showed up in Heartopia as part of the limited-time Call of Whales event, giving players a new seasonal animal to bond with. Once unlocked, the next step is finding the Dolphin Trough and feeding dolphins their favorite fish daily to build friendship, which unlocks rewards and decorations along the way. This guide covers the exact trough location, how to unlock dolphins, and everything needed to start bonding before the event wraps up.

Where Is the Dolphin Trough in Heartopia?

The Dolphin Trough sits underwater in Whalefall Canyon. After finishing the introductory dolphin quest, Rory guides players straight to the feeding area, making it much easier to find on repeat visits.

The quickest route is from the underwater camp near the portal. Swim through the ocean shortcut heading toward Whalefall Canyon, then keep going down until reaching the dolphin feeding area. The trough sits in an open section of the canyon and becomes a permanent marker under the Animal feature once found.

tip
If the trough doesn't appear right away, the Call of Whales storyline isn't far enough along yet. Finish investigating the mysterious shadows and speak with Rory to unlock it. The event marker can also be checked anytime for a direct route.

How to Unlock Dolphins in Heartopia

Dolphins must be unlocked through the Call of Whales questline before any feeding can happen. Logging in during the event triggers a short cutscene about strange activity near Whalefall Canyon, and Oliver sends players to investigate three suspicious shadows in the area.

Interacting with each of the three investigation points and completing all inspections advances the quest to Rory, who introduces the Dolphin Trough. From there, dolphins become available through the Animal menu and bond progress can be tracked anytime.

What Are the Dolphins' Favorite Foods?

Dolphins have three favorite foods, and feeding them these specific fish builds familiarity much faster than using random catches:

  • Sardine – common and easy to catch anywhere in the ocean
  • Sea Bass – also found across general ocean fishing spots
  • Scad – the trickiest of the three, as it is exclusive to the Whale Sea
warning
Random fish still work, but only the three favorites listed above give the full familiarity boost. Stock up before heading to the trough to avoid a wasted trip.

Keeping a small stockpile of all three fish in storage is a good habit so no trip to the trough goes to waste. Dolphins also tend to favor sunny weather, so checking conditions on the in-game watch before heading out is worth doing.

How Do Dolphin Bond Levels Work?

Every feeding with a favorite fish increases the bond level, and higher levels unlock more rewards and interactions.

Bond Level 2 is one of the bigger milestones , dolphins get a chance to visit a player's Sea Mount home and can leave gifts, just like other animals in the game.

As bond levels climb further, players start earning dolphin-themed decor pieces that can be placed as furniture. These are exclusive to the seasonal event, so they are worth pursuing before the dolphins leave.

tip
Familiarity Level 4 unlocks the Life Fragments feature, one of the most valuable rewards in the entire bonding chain. Prioritize daily feeding to reach it before the event ends.

Since dolphins are only available for the duration of Call of Whales, daily feeding is the best way to lock in as many rewards as possible before the event closes. A quick daily check-in at the trough is usually all it takes to keep bond levels climbing steadily.
