"The Free Lanes update is Starfield's biggest update yet," Bethesda Game Studios declared in the official patch notes published April 7, 2026. That's a bold claim for a game approaching its third anniversary, but the sheer volume of what version 1.16.236 delivers makes it hard to argue otherwise.
Free planetary travel finally arrives
The single biggest addition in this update is Free Lanes, a feature Starfield players have been asking for since launch day in September 2023. Players can now use Cruise Mode to fly freely through open space between planets within a star system, stopping at points of interest along the way. For a game built around space exploration, the ability to actually move through space without a loading screen feels less like a new feature and more like fixing something that should have been there from day one.
New space encounters, additional dungeons, and fresh points of interest are scattered throughout the Settled Systems to give that open travel some actual content to bump into. Anchorpoint Station, a new POI in the Algorab system, is one of the named additions. The distribution and cooldown timers for planet-side points of interest have also been adjusted, which should make exploration feel less repetitive over time.
X-Tech, legendary upgrades, and deeper customization
Here's the thing: the gear system in Starfield just got substantially more depth. X-Tech crafting now applies to both weapons and armor, letting players fine-tune legendary effects on their equipment. On top of that, the update introduces additional quality tiers, Rank 4 Legendary effects, and upgrade modules that improve individual weapon or suit attributes. New weapon skins can be applied at workbenches for players who want their loadout to look as good as it performs.
Ships aren't left out either. A new buildable ship optimization terminal lets players spend X-Tech to improve ship attributes, and Ship Equipment schematics open up new hardware options in the ship builder. The third-person ship camera also gets an additional distance setting, so you can actually see the whole vessel you spent hours building.
The Free Lanes update and all features in version 1.16.236 are free for all Starfield players on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. The Terran Armada story DLC is a separate purchase at $10.
Starborn powers and the Quantum Entanglement Device
New game+ runs get a meaningful upgrade with the Quantum Entanglement Device, which gives players the ability to carry some items through the Unity. That's a direct response to one of the longer-standing frustrations with Starfield's new game+ loop, where starting over meant leaving everything behind.
Starborn Powers can now be upgraded using Quantum Essence, a resource dropped by destroyed Starborn ships. Quantum Essence can be added to the Favorites menu for quick access mid-combat, which is a small but welcome quality-of-life touch for players deep into the Starborn side of the story.
Terran Armada DLC and the PS5 debut
The Terran Armada story expansion lands alongside the free update at $10. Players face a robotic enemy faction called the Terran Armada across new locations, with new weapons added to the mix. This is Bethesda's second story expansion for Starfield, following Shattered Space, and signals the studio isn't done with the game despite its mixed reception.
April 7, 2026 also marks Starfield's arrival on PlayStation 5, expanding the game's platform reach for the first time since launch. The PS5 version includes everything in the base game, the Free Lanes update, and access to the Terran Armada DLC.
Bug fixes that actually matter
What most players miss in a patch this size are the fixes that quietly make the game better. Several quest bugs get addressed here: "The Hammer Falls" now correctly grants the Star Eagle ship on completion, "Refurbished Goods" no longer takes wrong items from inventory, and "Missed Beyond Measure" resolves a companion lock issue. The weapon workbench placement problem in ships and houses is also fixed, which anyone who has tried to furnish a ship will appreciate.
