Introduction

Six games, one legendary series, and more Disney worlds than you can shake a Keyblade at. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX brings the full early saga of Sora, Donald, and Goofy to PC, covering everything from the original action-RPG through Birth by Sleep. If you've never touched the series or want to revisit it with enhanced visuals, this is the definitive starting point.

Overview

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX is Square Enix's most complete packaging of the series' foundational era, collecting six entries that span roughly a decade of storytelling. Released on PC via Steam on June 13, 2024, the collection covers the full arc from Sora's first encounter with the Heartless through the prequel events of Birth by Sleep, giving players the complete picture before Kingdom Hearts III picks up the thread.

Four of the six entries are fully playable action-RPGs: Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. The remaining two, 358/2 Days and Re:coded, are presented as HD cutscene compilations rather than playable games. That distinction matters if you're expecting six full playthroughs, but the story content in those compilations runs long enough to feel substantial.

The collection arrives on PC with enhanced backgrounds across all entries, bringing the visuals closer to what modern hardware can support. Both Japanese and International versions are available through the Steam launcher, though save data cannot be transferred between them, so pick one and stick with it.

Gameplay and mechanics

The core of the collection rests on the real-time Keyblade combat that defined the series. Key features across the playable titles include:

  • Real-time action-RPG combat with party members Donald and Goofy
  • Command Deck system in Birth by Sleep for customizable ability loadouts
  • Card-based battle mechanics in Re:Chain of Memories
  • Reaction Commands and Drive Forms in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
  • Summon abilities pulling from the broader Disney roster

Each game plays differently enough that working through all four playable entries doesn't feel repetitive. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix in particular remains one of the tightest action-RPG combat systems Square Enix has produced, with boss encounters that demand attention even on standard difficulty.

World and setting

The Disney collaboration is the series' most recognizable hook, and the range across this collection is significant. Worlds span classic animated films including Hercules, The Little Mermaid, and Sleeping Beauty, alongside deeper cuts that longtime fans still argue over. Birth by Sleep visits worlds tied to Snow White and Cinderella, while Kingdom Hearts II expands into Pirates of the Caribbean and Tron territory.

Underneath the Disney surface sits a genuinely dense original mythology built around light, darkness, hearts, and a cast of original characters whose relationships grow increasingly complicated across the six entries. The lore is famously convoluted, but the collection presents it in release order, which remains the most coherent way to absorb it.

Content and replayability

Completing all four playable games at a reasonable pace runs well over 100 hours. Each Final Mix version includes content that wasn't in the original Western releases, including additional boss fights, secret cutscenes, and expanded areas. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix adds the Limit Cut episode and a superboss fight against Lingering Will that remains one of the harder optional encounters in the series.

The HD cutscene compilations for 358/2 Days and Re:coded each run several hours on their own, filling in story gaps that would otherwise leave the main narrative feeling incomplete. Skipping them is possible, but players who want the full context for why certain characters behave the way they do in later games will want to watch both.
