Overview
Kingdom Hearts III is the third numbered entry in Square Enix's long-running action RPG series, released in January 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Developed by Square Enix Business Division 3, the game picks up after the events of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, placing a more mature Sora at the center of a desperate race to assemble seven guardians of light before Master Xehanort triggers a second Keyblade War. The stakes are higher than anything the series has attempted before, and the game delivers on that promise through sheer scale.
The narrative threads running through Kingdom Hearts III are genuinely dense. Riku and King Mickey search for a battle-worn Keyblade wielder, while Sora, Donald, and Goofy travel across Disney and Pixar worlds hunting for the "Key to Return Hearts." Characters from across the entire series converge as the story reaches its climax, rewarding players who have followed the franchise since the original 2002 release. The Re Mind expansion, released in January 2020, adds a substantial epilogue and additional boss encounters that extend that payoff further.
Gameplay and mechanics
Kingdom Hearts III builds its combat on the hack-and-slash foundation of Kingdom Hearts II, then layers in mechanics from the handheld entries to create the most feature-rich system in the series. The core party consists of Sora, Donald, and Goofy, with up to two additional Disney characters joining based on the world being visited.

Key combat mechanics include:
- Formchange, which transforms equipped Keyblades into new weapon forms with unique movesets
- Attraction Flow, letting Sora summon Disney theme park rides as combat tools
- Shotlock, a lock-on ranged attack system carried over from Birth by Sleep

Formchange is the standout addition. Each Keyblade has its own transformation states, so swapping weapons mid-battle changes not just your stats but your entire playstyle. A Keyblade tied to Toy Story's world plays completely differently from one connected to Frozen's Arendelle.

What worlds are in Kingdom Hearts III?
Kingdom Hearts III features some of the most visually distinct worlds in the series, pulling from both Disney classics and Pixar properties for the first time. Toy Box, based on Toy Story, drops Sora into a fully realized Galaxy Toys store. Monstropolis adapts Monsters, Inc. with environmental puzzles built around the door system. The Kingdom of Corona recreates the look of Tangled with cel-shaded visuals that closely match the film's aesthetic.
Other worlds include Arendelle from Frozen, The Caribbean from Pirates of the Caribbean, San Fransokyo from Big Hero 6, and the 100 Acre Wood returns as a minigame hub. Classic Disney worlds like Olympus from Hercules open the game and set the visual bar high. Each world runs for several hours and includes its own story arc that ties loosely into the main plot.

Visual and audio design
The jump to current-generation hardware in 2019 gave Kingdom Hearts III visuals that genuinely rival the animated films it draws from. The Tangled and Frozen worlds in particular are striking in how closely they match their source material, with lighting and character models that hold up against the CG films themselves.
Yoko Shimomura returns to compose the soundtrack, delivering a score that blends orchestral arrangements with the series' signature emotional themes. Familiar leitmotifs resurface at key story moments, and the sheer volume of world-specific tracks keeps the audio from ever feeling repetitive across the game's runtime.

Content and replayability
Beyond the main story, Kingdom Hearts III includes a Gummiphone photo mode, the Gummi Ship open-world space exploration segments, and a Data Greeting feature that lets players stage custom scenes. The Re Mind DLC adds the Limitcut Episode, which introduces 13 superboss fights against members of the real Organization XIII, along with the Secret Episode that continues the story further. These boss battles are among the hardest in the series and give endgame players a genuine challenge well past the credits.
