Marvel Rivals Guide: How to Counter Cyclops

Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 dropped Cyclops into the Duelist pool, and he wasted no time climbing toward the top of the tier list. His optic beams hit hard at range, and if your team lets him sit back and fire freely, he can carry games almost by himself. The good news: he only has 275 HP and falls apart the moment someone gets in his face. The trick is picking the right hero to do it.

What makes Cyclops so hard to deal with?

Cyclops is built for mid-to-long range. His Optic Blast outputs consistent damage from a safe distance, and his movement tools (including Propulsion Burst) let him push away anyone who tries to close the gap. That self-peel is what makes him frustrating. He's not tanky enough to survive a sustained melee fight, but he can delay that fight long enough to burst you down first.

The answer isn't to out-range him. You need to dive him, overwhelm his movement options, and finish him before he can reset. Every hero on this list does exactly that.

Picking the right counter matters

Best heroes to counter Cyclops

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is the most mobile counter in the game, and Cyclops has no real answer to a Spidey who knows what he's doing. The web-swinging kit closes distance instantly, and even when Cyclops uses Propulsion Burst to push back, Spider-Man can re-engage before he resets position.

The combo to run: Web Cluster (right-click) into Get Over Here! (E) into Amazing Combo (F) into Spider-Power (left-click). This sequence sticks to Cyclops through his escape tools and chunks his 275 HP fast. You don't need to be a Spider-Man main to make this work, but knowing the combo timing matters.

Captain America

Captain America is the reliable pick if you want a Vanguard who can pin Cyclops down and never let him breathe. Cap's job is to dive backlines and torture hitscan heroes, and Cyclops fits that target profile perfectly.

His combo: Vibranium Energy Saw (E) into Liberty Rush (F) into Sentinel Strikes (left-click). The key is repetition. Keep running the combo, keep the pressure on, and Cyclops can't find the space to fire freely. Cap is hard to outrun, which is exactly the problem Cyclops doesn't want.

Iron Fist

Iron Fist is the most technical counter on this list, but also one of the most effective in the right hands. He was buffed in Season 8 and hasn't been touched since, which means his kit is in a strong place right now.

What makes Iron Fist special here is that he can actually parry Cyclops' Optic Blasts using Dragon's Defense (right-click). That changes the whole dynamic of the matchup. Instead of eating beam damage while closing in, you're absorbing it and launching your counter-attack.

Full sequence: Crane Leap (Space) into Dragon's Defense (right-click) into Yat Jee Chung Kuen (right-click) into Jeet Kune Do (left-click) into K'un-Lun Kick (L Shift). Boost your health with Harmony Recovery before engaging. This combo shuts Cyclops down in tight spaces and close-range fights where he has the least room to maneuver.

Hulk

The community consensus on Cyclops counters can be summarized as: just jump him. Hulk is the literal embodiment of that strategy.

Incredible Leap (Space) gets you on top of Cyclops immediately. From there: Radioactive Lockdown (E) to stun him before he escapes, then Gamma Burst (right-click) into Heavy Blow (left-click) into Gamma Burst again. The stun is what makes this work. Without it, Cyclops uses Propulsion Burst to push you back. With it, he's stuck taking the full combo.

Even if Cyclops does manage to push Hulk away, the leap ability gets you right back on him. There's no clean escape from a Hulk who's locked onto you.

Angela

Angela was buffed in the Season 8.5 update, and that timing couldn't be better for Cyclops matchups. Her shields eat the Optic Blast damage that would punish other divers, and her charge attack (Assassin's Charge, L Shift) separates Cyclops from his team before he can get support.

Full combo: Assassin's Charge (L Shift) into Divine Judgement (E) into Axes of Ichors (left-click) into Wingblade Ascent (E). If things go sideways, her flying ability gives her an exit that most Vanguards don't have. The shield-plus-charge combination is the cleanest hard counter to beam-based heroes in the current meta.

Which counter should you pick?

If you want the easiest on-ramp, Captain America and Hulk are forgiving picks that punish Cyclops without demanding precise execution. Both have straightforward dive patterns and enough bulk to survive the initial beam damage.

Spider-Man is the highest-upside option if you have the mechanics. His re-engage potential after Propulsion Burst is unmatched, and he's one of the few heroes who can truly chase Cyclops across the whole map.

Iron Fist is the specialist pick. The parry mechanic is genuinely powerful against Cyclops specifically, but only if you've put in the time to land it consistently. In the hands of someone who knows him well, Iron Fist is probably the single best Cyclops counter in the game right now.

Angela slots in when your team needs a Vanguard who can also neutralize a fed Cyclops. Her buffs in 8.5 made her more viable in this matchup than she was before.

What's the fastest way to shut Cyclops down?

The answer is almost always a coordinated dive. Cyclops' Propulsion Burst can handle one diver, but two simultaneous divers from different angles overwhelm it. Pair Spider-Man with Hulk, or run Angela alongside Iron Fist, and Cyclops has no clean answer.

His 275 HP means any successful close-range combo ends the fight quickly. The mistake most teams make is trying to out-range him or waiting for him to overextend. He won't. You have to go to him.
