Marvel's Wolverine Guide: Best Techniques to Unlock First

Marvel's Wolverine splits Logan's progression into two distinct systems: passive Techniques that sharpen his core combat moves, and Special Techniques that give him rechargeable active abilities. Knowing which ones to buy first makes a real difference, since fights escalate quickly and Technique Points are better spent solving problems as they appear than saved for later. There are 36 Technique nodes available in a standard playthrough, with four more locked behind New Game Plus, so the tree is completable if you stick with it.

What are Techniques and how do they work?

Techniques are passive upgrades tied to player level. They do not recharge or activate manually; they modify what Logan already does, whether that is sprinting, leaping, parrying, or finishing combos. Special Techniques are separate: they sit in four equippable slots and recharge between uses, functioning more like cooldown abilities than permanent stat boosts.

Because Techniques unlock at specific levels rather than from a shared pool you can freely tap, there is no reason to hoard Technique Points. Buy the best upgrade available at each level and keep moving.

tip
Techniques are locked behind player levels, so spending points immediately is almost always better than saving them. You cannot fall behind by buying upgrades early.

Best Techniques to prioritize: full priority table

Loading table...

The early game priority is clear: Healing Strike, Savage Sprinter, Stagger Leap, and Sprint Block cover offense, setup, and survivability before the game throws anything complicated at you. Everything else builds on that foundation.

Early-game Techniques: levels 2 to 3

Savage Sprinter (Level 2)

Savage Sprinter turns Logan's sprint into an opening strike. While running, he performs a quick multi-hit area attack that damages nearby enemies and builds Rage with each hit. That Rage generation is the real reason to take it first; getting Rage up fast means stronger options are available sooner in any fight. Against groups, opening with a sprint attack instead of running straight into a cluster is a straightforward upgrade with no downside.

Stagger Leap (Level 2)

The standard Leap already closes distance fast. Stagger Leap adds a charge option that delivers extra stagger on landing. Staggered enemies open up to heavier follow-up attacks, and the Technique pairs directly with Healing Strike, which requires a staggered target to trigger its health recovery. These two Techniques work as a two-piece combo from the moment both are available.

Healing Strike (Level 3)

This is the single most important early Technique. Against a staggered enemy, Logan deals heavy damage and recovers health at the same time. It can also end a Barrage, making it straightforward to weave into normal attack strings.

The design philosophy here is worth understanding: Wolverine is meant to stay aggressive. Healing Strike rewards that aggression by turning offense into sustain. Players who try to play defensively and wait for openings will find healing much harder to come by. Get this at Level 3 and build your early combat around triggering it consistently.

Sprint Block (Level 3)

Reaver enemies carry guns, and Sprint Block makes approaching them far less punishing. While sprinting, Logan automatically blocks basic ranged fire coming from the front. It does not stop every projectile or heavy attack, but it covers the most common ranged harassment you face in early encounters. Paired with Savage Sprinter, Logan can sprint into a group, block incoming shots, and land the opening multi-hit before enemies can react.

warning
Sprint Block only covers basic ranged fire from the front while sprinting. It will not protect Logan from powerful projectiles or attacks coming from the sides.

Mid-game Techniques: levels 11 to 17

Unblockable Ender (Level 11)

As enemies start relying on blocking more often, Unblockable Ender fills a specific gap. It adds a high-damage Combo Ender that bypasses enemy guards, so Logan's attack strings land their final hit regardless of defensive posture. The Technique becomes noticeably stronger when combined with Adaptations that apply bonus effects to Combo Enders, so keep that synergy in mind when building out Logan's Adaptation loadout.

Advanced Parry (Level 17)

Parrying already matters in Wolverine's combat system. Advanced Parry makes it viable against multiple attackers by letting Logan deflect several incoming melee strikes at once, rather than requiring perfect timing against each individual attack. Stack it with the Extended Parry Adaptation to widen the successful parry window further. For players who prefer reactive counter-based play over constant movement, this is the best mid-game pickup.

Staggered Throw (Level 17)

Staggered Throw expands what stagger is actually useful for. After an enemy is staggered, Logan can throw them into another enemy to interrupt that second target. Walls and environmental hazards are also valid throw destinations when the arena gives you the angle. In crowded fights, one staggered enemy becomes a tool for clearing space rather than just a Healing Strike setup.

Late-game Techniques: level 23 and beyond

Charged Helix Blast (Level 23)

Charged Helix Blast gives Logan a wide-area ranged option for moments when closing distance is not immediately possible. The attack covers a broad cone in front of Wolverine, hitting multiple grouped enemies at once. Against tightly packed formations or enemies holding defensive positions, it creates openings without requiring Logan to wade directly into the group first.

Helix Combo (Level 23)

Helix Claws are unlocked through story progression. Their base attack releases a powerful blast around Wolverine. Helix Combo adds a second heavy follow-up to that ability, increasing total damage output significantly. The follow-up can occasionally miss if the first hit sends an enemy flying too far, but the extra damage against larger enemies that stay in place makes it worth equipping once available.

Helix Counter-Shot (Level 23)

Late-game encounters put more ranged enemies in arenas. Helix Counter-Shot turns a defensive dodge into an immediate counterattack: after successfully dodging a ranged shot, Logan fires back with his own ranged blast. That removes the need to chase down shooters after evading, which keeps the fight's momentum in Logan's favor.

tip
All three Helix Techniques unlock at Level 23. Prioritize Helix Combo if you want more raw damage, or Helix Counter-Shot if ranged enemies are giving you trouble.

What are the best Special Techniques?

Special Techniques occupy four equippable slots and recharge between uses. Here is how the main options break down:

Tornado Spin is unlocked automatically and serves as Logan's primary crowd-clearing tool. It spins through nearby enemies to create space when Wolverine gets surrounded. Upgrading it keeps the damage relevant beyond the opening hours.

Knee Breaker unlocks at Level 4 and is the best early Special Technique for most players. It sends Logan into an enemy with a flying knee that staggers the target and interrupts attacks. That stagger feeds directly into Healing Strike, meaning Knee Breaker can stop an enemy's offense, leave them vulnerable, and set up immediate health recovery in one sequence.

Relentless unlocks at Level 7 and takes the defensive slot. Activating it boosts Logan's health regeneration for a short duration, which covers situations where triggering Healing Strike is not practical. Players who rarely struggle with sustain can swap it for something more offensive, but it is a reliable safety option during harder fights.

Brutal Assault arrives at Level 25 and is the best single-target Special Technique in the game. Logan dashes to an enemy and follows with a heavy claw combo that can break through defenses. It cannot be an early priority by definition, but once it unlocks it earns a permanent slot.

What is the recommended Technique unlock order?

A practical progression through the full tree looks like this:

  1. Healing Strike (Level 3) - health recovery through offense
  2. Savage Sprinter (Level 2) - Rage generation on approach
  3. Stagger Leap (Level 2) - reliable stagger setup
  4. Sprint Block (Level 3) - safe approach against ranged enemies
  5. Knee Breaker Special Technique (Level 4) - interrupt and stagger combo
  6. Unblockable Ender (Level 11) - bypass blocking enemies
  7. Advanced Parry (Level 17) - multi-attacker defense
  8. Staggered Throw (Level 17) - crowd control expansion
  9. Helix Techniques (Level 23) - ranged and Helix Claws upgrades
  10. Brutal Assault Special Technique (Level 25) - single-target finisher

Stealth Techniques exist and are worth picking up if you regularly use stealth, but they are optional enough that aggressive players can deprioritize them entirely without losing much. The combat-focused path above handles the majority of what the game throws at you.

The 36-node tree is completable in a standard run, so no upgrade is permanently out of reach. The goal is to solve combat problems as they appear rather than speculate about future encounters. Start with the four Level 2 to 3 Techniques, keep Knee Breaker in your Special slot, and the rest of the tree falls into place naturally as Logan levels up.
