FF7 Revelation director says he fought for a physical release

Naoki Hamaguchi says he personally pushed for a physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, but Square Enix's publishing team had the final call on the disc situation.

If you were hoping Final Fantasy 7 Revelation would follow Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and ship as a complete disc experience, you are not alone. Series director Naoki Hamaguchi feels that frustration too, and he wants fans to know he went to bat for them.

Speaking at Tokyo Game Show this year, Hamaguchi confirmed that Revelation is expected to clock in at around 200GB, a size that puts it well beyond what even two Blu-ray discs can hold. That physical reality set the stage for a decision that has frustrated a vocal portion of the fanbase: the game will ship on a single disc, but that disc only contains the opening section. Everything else requires a download.

What the physical edition actually includes

The situation is a step back from how the trilogy started. Final Fantasy 7 Remake shipped on two discs. Rebirth did the same. Revelation breaks that pattern with a single "key disc" that gets you into the game before handing off to a mandatory download for the rest of the content.

For players without stable internet connections, or those who simply prefer to own a game outright on physical media, that is a meaningful difference. The "no disc, no purchase" crowd has been vocal about it online, and Hamaguchi acknowledged exactly that sentiment in a recent interview.

Hamaguchi's position and the limits of his authority

Here's the thing: Hamaguchi was direct about where his authority ends. Product line-up decisions, SKUs, and how a game goes on sale fall under the publishing team at Square Enix, not the director. That is not a deflection, it is just how large publishers operate.

But he did not stop there. Hamaguchi said he used his position to push for a physical version as hard as he could, working through internal negotiations and discussions with first-party platform holders to land on the current outcome.

"I used my position to put forth an argument for the physical version as much as possible," he said. "And all of the negotiations, both internally and with first parties, have led us to where we are now."

The result is a compromise. Not a full disc release, but not a digital-only situation either. Whether that lands as a win depends entirely on your perspective.

The 200GB problem nobody can argue with

The raw data point here matters. At approximately 200GB, Revelation is simply too large for a standard dual-layer Blu-ray disc, which tops out around 100GB. Two discs would get closer, but Square Enix landed on one disc with a download requirement instead.

Rebirth and Remake both fit on two discs because they were smaller games. Revelation is the conclusion to a trilogy that has been building in scope since 2020, so the size increase tracks. That does not make the download requirement easier to accept for collectors, but it does explain why a full physical release was never straightforward.

Hamaguchi's comments carry a genuine tone of someone who cares about the format. He described himself as a fan of physical media, acknowledged the community frustration directly, and closed with a line that says more than any press statement could: "I did my best."

What this means heading into April 2027
