Naoki Yoshida confirmed two major overhauls to Final Fantasy XIV Online's housing system at the Berlin Fan Festival, directly calling out World of Warcraft's recently launched housing feature as a benchmark the team is actively studying.
Yoshida cut straight to it during a media Q&A, anticipating the question before it was even fully asked. "I get the feeling that what you really want to ask is, well WoW has come up with this amazing housing system. How about 14?" he said. That kind of self-awareness from a director is rare, and it signals that the team has been paying close attention to how its MMO rival handled a feature Final Fantasy XIV Online players have been requesting improvements to for years.
What Yoshida actually said about WoW's system
Here's the thing: Yoshida wasn't dismissive or defensive. He called Blizzard's new housing system "amazing" and described it as "a good source of research," adding that he had gone hands-on with it himself. The broader context matters too. Yoshida noted that the WoW team had publicly said they looked to FFXIV when building their own housing and aimed to surpass it. His response was to call that "a great honour" rather than a threat. That framing tells you a lot about where the team's head is at.
WoW's system lets players freely scale and place objects with far fewer restrictions than FFXIV's current grid-based approach, which relies on a fairly technical UI that Yoshida himself described as "not very accessible."
Two overhauls, two very different timelines
The first planned overhaul targets the housing UI directly. The goal, in Yoshida's words, is to make it "more accessible for casual players, so that they can easily create elaborate housing." Whether that means a full placement freedom overhaul or a cleaner menu redesign is still unclear, but the intent is to lower the barrier for players who currently find the system too obtuse to get creative with.
The second overhaul is the more interesting one, and Yoshida is being tight-lipped about it. What he did say is telling: "I think you will be much happier to hear what it is compared to the UI update." He also noted it could arrive before the UI overhaul, despite still being in the planning phase. Both changes are targeting the upcoming expansion Evercold as their release window.
The most common theory in the community points toward housing availability. Plot scarcity has been a persistent frustration since the lottery system launched, with players spending months bidding on medium-sized plots in popular wards like the Lavender Beds without success. If the second overhaul addresses supply, that would explain why Yoshida expects it to land harder than a UI refresh.
Why this matters beyond furniture placement
Housing in FFXIV has always been more than decoration. It's a social hub, a community anchor, and for many players the main reason they log in outside of raid nights. The problem has never been that the system lacks depth; it's that getting a plot in the first place is a grind in itself, and once you have one, actually decorating it requires either technical workarounds or a tolerance for a UI that hasn't kept pace with what players want to build.
Patches like Patch 7.4 Into the Mist showed the team is willing to make sweeping quality-of-life changes across multiple systems at once. The glamour overhaul in that same patch removed long-standing restrictions that players had complained about for years. Housing feeling like the next logical target makes sense given the momentum.
For players who want to get ahead on FFXIV's current systems while waiting on housing news, the FFXIV guide collection covers everything from dungeon routes to glamour builds. The Evercold expansion is where these housing changes are expected to land, so watch the Fan Festival announcements closely as more details emerge.
