CD Projekt Red dropped a free Witcher 3 remaster that nobody saw coming, Hoyoverse unveiled a cooperative fantasy action game that looks nothing like Genshin Impact, and Path of Exile 2 finally has a 1.0 launch date. Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 ran two hours under host Geoff Keighley and packed in well over 30 announcements. Here's the lowdown on everything that matters.

The surprises nobody had on their bingo card
Nodusfall was the genuine jaw-dropper of the night. Hoyoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact, revealed a cooperative fantasy action game that draws heavy visual inspiration from Elden Ring. Dark, grounded, and built around co-op play, it's a sharp departure from anything the studio has made before. No release date yet, but the trailer alone made it the most-talked-about reveal of the show.
The other bombshell came from CD Projekt Red. The studio surprised everyone with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, a free upgrade landing September 29 for all existing owners (Switch excluded, apparently). The improvements list is substantial: graphical overhaul, enhanced combat, reworked movement and animations, ray tracing, and cross-platform mod support. Both the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions are included. For a game that already received a next-gen upgrade in 2022, this is a significantly bigger deal.
The reveals with actual release dates
Several games that have been in the pipeline for a while finally got concrete windows.
- Gears of War: E-Day got a new story-focused trailer and confirmed its October 6 launch date
- Silent Hill: Townfall, the first-person entry developed by the No Code studio (Stories: Untold, Observation), revealed its full voice cast and a September 24 release date
- Rayman Legends Retold arrives October 1 and adds a new musical level built around Los Del Rio's "Macarena"
- Path of Exile 2 exits Early Access and hits version 1.0 on December 11, nearly two years after launching in Early Access
- Mewgenics, the cat-breeding tactics game from The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen, comes to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2 on September 8
- Stage Tour, a Rock Band-style plastic instrument revival, launches December 10
World premieres worth tracking
The show leaned hard into new reveals. PUBG DED.NET is a first-person multiplayer shooter set in the 1990s with roguelike progression built into its run structure. Dust: Origins, from Airship Syndicate (the team behind Wayfinder and Darksiders Genesis), is an isometric horror shooter set on a doomed orbital prison. Like or Die (formerly Project Bonfire) puts 16 streamers into four teams who broadcast their matches while trying to eliminate each other. Gravhounds is a four-player co-op builder starring anthropomorphic dogs who use gravity as a weapon, hitting Early Access on November 2.
Lego Skylines also made its debut, a brick-based city builder developed by former Cities: Skylines II designers. The concept is exactly what it sounds like, and the pedigree behind it suggests it could actually be good.
The bigger franchises checking in
Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi took the stage to present a trailer focused on the Weapon battles, spotlighting the colossal planet guardians that fans of the original know well. The game is still targeting 2027. The Witcher 3 expansion Songs of the Past, which is expected to lay narrative groundwork for The Witcher IV, also got a new trailer showing first gameplay and a new weapon for Geralt.
Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Tactics, a turn-based strategy spin-off designed by veterans of Mario + Rabbids and Ghost Recon. Players control Rainbow Six: Siege operators in single-player missions against terrorists. It's due in 2027. Ananta, the urban open-world action game that the internet keeps calling "anime Grand Theft Auto," locked in a January 15, 2027 release date alongside a new story trailer.
Capcom showed more of Mega Man: Dual Override, revealing the first Robot Master (Twinkle Girl) and teasing Proto Man's return. Metro 2039, the fourth mainline Metro game, got a gameplay-heavy trailer confirming a February 2027 window. Exodus, the Mass Effect-inspired sci-fi RPG, introduced Salt, a talking octopus piloting a mech suit who serves as one of your companions. It's dated for April 7, 2027.
The oddball highlight? Snoop Dogg is Hitman: World of Assassination's next Elusive Target. He plays marijuana tycoon Dr. Syrus Cane in a mission called The Herbalist, available from August 27 to September 26.
What the rest of the slate looks like
A few other titles worth flagging: Ontos, the spiritual follow-up to Soma from Frictional Games (the Amnesia creators), got its first gameplay trailer and is targeting 2027. Pony Island 2: Panda Circus from Inscryption creator Daniel Mullins has an April 27, 2027 date and looks predictably strange. Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake is coming, complete with both original expansions, though no date was given. Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons showed over eight minutes of third-person dark fantasy gameplay, also due in 2027.
Here's the thing about this year's show: the spread of genres was genuinely wider than most ONL presentations. Strategy games, horror, city builders, rhythm games, co-op shooters, and action RPGs all had representation. The Witcher 3 remaster and Nodusfall were the genuine conversation starters, but games like Path of Exile 2 finally getting a full release date and Silent Hill: Townfall locking in September will matter more to a lot of players in the short term.
