Roblox’s Grow a Garden Is Becoming a Movie

The Roblox hit Grow a Garden is officially getting a movie adaptation. The game, which surged in popularity earlier this year, is being developed as a feature film by Story Kitchen, the production company currently involved in multiple major video game–based projects. Story Kitchen has secured a development deal with the game's creators and will guide the project through its move to Hollywood.

From viral Roblox success to film development

Grow a Garden started as a small project created by an unknown teenage developer on Roblox. Within months, it exploded into one of the platform's most-played titles of 2025, hitting concurrent player counts that rivaled Fortnite. The game hooks players with a simple loop: plant seeds, tend your garden, and watch it grow. Its chill progression and co-op mechanics turned it into one of the year's most discussed Roblox experiences.

Story Kitchen picked up the project and is now building it into a narrative-driven feature film. Grow a Garden doesn't have a built-in story, but the production team plans to center the movie on friendship, personal growth, and emotional connection — themes they think will work for a family-friendly theatrical or streaming release.

Story Kitchen continues its push into video game adaptations

Story Kitchen has been stacking up video game adaptations for the last few years. The studio is working on live-action versions of Tomb Raider and Life Is Strange for Amazon Prime Video, plus film adaptations of It Takes Two and Split Fiction, with Sydney Sweeney attached to the latter. Other projects in the pipeline include Streets of Rage at Lionsgate, Sifu at Netflix, and Shinobi at Universal.

Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg called the game imaginative and community-driven, pointing to its potential for an uplifting and accessible story.

A young creator behind the game's rapid growth

The teenage developer behind Grow a Garden has stayed anonymous. Management of the game shifted to Splitting Point, a studio that handles updates and ongoing support. Weekly patches keep rolling out, which helps maintain the game's large and active player base.

As Roblox keeps expanding as a platform for user-generated content, Grow a Garden shows how smaller games can blow up and land major entertainment deals — sometimes faster than mainstream titles with bigger budgets and marketing teams.
