WARDOGS Flying Tips: Switch Your Helicopter to Mouse Controls

Flying helicopters in WARDOGS is confusing by default because mouse control is disabled. Here's how to enable it and finally fly like you're used to.

If you're struggling to fly in WARDOGS, switch your helicopter controls to the mouse. It's off by default, and turning it on is what made flying make sense to me.

Why Is Flying in WARDOGS So Confusing?

Because by default the mouse doesn't fly the helicopter. Before I changed it, flying was really difficult and really confusing. I'd never played a game where flying wasn't mapped to the mouse already, and I kept wondering why moving the mouse up, down, or sideways did nothing to how I was flying.

Then I caught a reel on Instagram (I can't remember whose, sorry) that pointed out it's never bound to the mouse, but you can bind it. Suddenly I could fly it like I would in Elite Dangerous or any other flight sim I've played.

It's a wild choice to have it off by default. My guess is it's because it's easier to crash with mouse control.

How to Turn On Mouse Flying in WARDOGS

It's in the settings, not the keybindings. Go to Settings > Controls > Settings and follow these steps:

  1. Set Rotary Vehicle Mouse Control to Enabled. With it off, the mouse only moves the camera.
  2. Set Helicopter Mouse Swipe Up/Down to Pitch, so moving the mouse up and down tips the nose.
  3. Set Helicopter Mouse Swipe Left/Right to whichever you're used to from other games.
  4. If you want pulling the mouse back to lift the nose, turn on Invert Y Axis – Air Vehicle (leave the infantry one off).

What Settings Should You Start With?

Once mouse control is on, the next problem is sensitivity. The Steam community FAQ suggests starting at around 60 to 65% for helicopter pitch and roll, then adjusting from there in the Firing Range rather than in a live match. Too high and every small nudge of the mouse throws the nose around; too low and you can't correct fast enough when something goes wrong.

For the keys that are left, the same FAQ suggests a Battlefield-style layout: collective up on W and down on S, so those keys handle height, with yaw on A and D to swing the tail. If you're coming from other games, that mapping will feel close to what your hands already expect, and it frees the mouse to do the flying.

What If the Mouse Still Does Nothing?

Check two things before you assume it's you.

  • HOTAS mode: If you ever turned on HOTAS controls without owning a flight stick, turn them off. The FAQ warns that HOTAS mode can stop mouse and keyboard flight inputs entirely.
  • Known bug: Several players report that pitch and yaw ignore the mouse while roll still works, and it can differ from one helicopter to the next. The FAQ's own verdict is that this is "probably the current mouse-input bug rather than an incorrect setting", so if your settings match and it still won't respond, it isn't your fault.

What's Easier, and What's Still Hard?

Almost everything is easier. Except landing.

The helicopters don't behave like I expect a helicopter to. In my head, a helicopter slows, stops, then goes straight down. I have no idea how you'd do that in this game. It might be a skill issue, but I haven't seen anyone land the way you'd expect a helicopter to land. Most people land like an aeroplane on a runway.

I'm sure someone will tell me they land perfectly by the book. Good for them.

Should New Pilots Switch to Mouse Controls?

Yes, 100%. Especially if you've flown in other games: bind it to the mouse instead of the keyboard.
