Insomniac Games has shipped a hotfix for Marvel's Wolverine that directly addresses one of the game's most mocked features: the Scent Trail navigation system that players quickly nicknamed the "fart trail" online.
The patch reduces the opacity of both the Scent Trail and the Audio Sense visual indicators, making them "less intense" in Insomniac's own words from the official patch notes. That's a meaningful change for players who felt the glowing guidance line was doing too much heavy lifting, essentially removing any sense of spatial reasoning from traversal.
What the scent trail debate was actually about
Here's the thing: the backlash wasn't just about one glowing line. It was part of a broader frustration with how aggressively Marvel's Wolverine holds the player's hand. Frequent objective markers, regular voice line nudges, and the persistent Scent Trail combined to create a navigation system that left very little room for players to figure anything out themselves.
The conversation echoed older debates around yellow paint in games like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, where visible environmental cues were seen as eroding exploration. For a linear action game built around a character defined by raw instinct, the irony of Logan being guided everywhere by a glowing trail wasn't lost on the community.
Before and after the hotfix
Prior to patch version 01.001.005, the Scent Trail appeared as a high-visibility glowing path that activated frequently during navigation segments. The Audio Sense indicator, which visualizes sound-based detection cues, carried a similarly strong visual presence.
Post-patch, both elements have reduced opacity. They're still there, still functional, still pointing you in the right direction. The key here is that Insomniac hasn't removed the systems entirely, just turned down the visual noise. Players who relied on them won't be lost, but the screen should feel less cluttered for everyone else.
What most players miss in the patch notes is the forward-looking line: Insomniac says the team is "exploring toggleable options for a future update." That would let players turn off Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators entirely, which is the outcome a vocal portion of the community has been pushing for since before launch.
Insomniac's response pattern is worth watching
This hotfix didn't arrive in a vacuum. Earlier this week, Insomniac community director James Stevenson publicly stated the team had been "cooking hard" in response to player feedback and was "100 percent listening." The Scent Trail patch is the first concrete output of that promise.
The studio has navigated post-launch feedback cycles before with the Spider-Man games, and the pattern here looks similar: acknowledge the criticism, ship a targeted fix quickly, and signal that more is coming. Whether the full toggle option materializes in the next major update or gets pushed further down the roadmap remains to be seen.
For players already in the middle of a playthrough, the reduced opacity is a genuine quality-of-life improvement without requiring any settings changes. For those waiting on a more complete solution before jumping in, Insomniac has at least confirmed it's on the table.
