Overwatch Season 5, officially titled A Grim Doctrine, went live October 6, 2026, and it landed with three changes that will reshape how the game plays at every rank. Sombra is no longer a Damage hero. Roadhog can no longer one-shot most of the roster with his Chain Hook combo. And Doctrine, the vampire support announced at BlizzCon 2026, arrived already nerfed from his trial version. This guide breaks down every number that matters so you know exactly what changed and why it changes how you play.
Doctrine is a Support hero built around his Infuse mechanic, which adds a powered-up effect to whichever ability he fires next. His Eternal Scepter heals allies and damages enemies at mid-range; when Infused, it fires a larger piercing blast. His dash ability, Shrouded Momentum, lets him rush horizontally with damage reduction, and the Infused version converts that into free-flight. His Invigorating Drones deploy to an ally to grant attack speed and healing, with the Infused version also deploying drones to himself.
His ultimate, Deliverance, launches a bat swarm across the map. Enemies caught by it have their maximum health temporarily reduced, while allies receive overhealth. After Day One nerfs prompted by his trial weekend overperformance, Deliverance now lasts 6 seconds, down from the 8 seconds shown at BlizzCon. The drones fire faster inside that window (5 shots per second, up from 4), so the effect still applies quickly, but the total exposure is shorter. His passive subrole is Survivor, meaning movement abilities trigger passive health regeneration.

Doctrine's Infuse ability menu
Blizzard acknowledged Doctrine was overperforming during the trial weekend before making the following adjustments at launch:
| Ability | Trial value | Season 5 live value |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate cost | Base | 8% higher |
| Invigorating Drones attack speed | 35% | 30% |
| Shrouded Momentum cooldown | 7 seconds | 8 seconds |
| Shrouded Momentum damage reduction | 50% | 40% |
| Shrouded Momentum crit immunity | Yes | Removed |
| Deliverance drone fire rate | 4 shots/sec | 5 shots/sec |
| Deliverance duration | 8 seconds | 6 seconds |
| Deliverance decay duration | 5 seconds | 4 seconds |
| Transfusion major perk conversion rate | Base | 50% lower |
The Transfusion perk reduction is the one most players will feel in extended fights. That perk reduced Infuse cooldown through combat, and it's now half as effective.
Here's the short answer: Hack is gone entirely. Not weakened, not relocated to a different ability slot. Removed. Blizzard's developer notes describe the reasoning directly: being locked out of your abilities was "jarring, frustrating, and difficult to deal with" from the opponent's perspective, and four previous reworks inside the Damage role never resolved that tension. Season 5 moves Sombra to the Tactician Support subrole and replaces hard ability-denial with a softer debuff system.
The new status effect is called Weaken, applied through her new Cyberspace ability. Weaken halves an enemy's own damage and healing output without preventing them from acting. That distinction matters: Sombra still disrupts, but the disruption is now a debuff rather than a lockout.
Her new healing tool is Hotfix, a secondary fire with 2 charges that heals an ally for 65 instant health plus 25 HP per second for up to 12 seconds (175 total). Critically, she can cast Hotfix while stealthed without immediately breaking stealth, though it does reveal her briefly. Hotfix also works on health packs and most enemy deployables on a separate 6-second cooldown.
| Ability | Status | Key numbers |
|---|---|---|
| Machine Pistol | Changed | 7 damage per projectile (was 8), falloff starts at 20m (was 15m) |
| Hotfix | New | 65 instant + 25 HP/s, 175 total, 2 charges, 8s cooldown, 17m range |
| Cyberspace | New | 40 damage or healing on impact, 5m zone for 3s, applies Weaken (50% reduced output) |
| Translocator | Changed | Stealth lasts 6.5s (was 5s), range 12.25m (was 18m), cooldown 7.5s (was 6s) |
| EMP | Changed | Cost up 67.5%, damage 20% of current health (was 25%) |
| Conspirator (passive) | New | Reveals enemies with a fully charged ultimate |
| Hack, Virus, Opportunist | Removed | Gone |
The stealth changes are worth sitting with. Entering stealth now takes 0.75 seconds instead of 0.3, making reactive stealth much harder to pull off. But once you're in, you have 6.5 seconds instead of 5. The play pattern shifts from "pop stealth to escape" toward "plan your stealth entry in advance."
Her perk tree is also completely new. Life Hack (minor) makes EMP simultaneously apply Hotfix to nearby allies. Data Packet (minor) cuts the Hotfix cooldown by 4 seconds when she hacks a health pack. Cybersecurity (major) doubles Cyberspace's healing on allies below half health. Note that perk XP requirements increased significantly: 67% more XP for the minor perk and 69.5% more for the major.
The mistake most players make when reading this rework is assuming Roadhog got nerfed. He got restructured. The instant-kill hook combo is gone, but his raw damage output actually increased, and he has a new defensive tool that converts enemy burst fire into his own offensive output.
The Chain Hook changes are surgical. The stun duration after a pull dropped from 0.4 to 0.3 seconds. The final distance from Roadhog after a pull increased from 3 to 4.5 meters. Those two changes together make the "hook into point-blank Scrap Gun into melee" sequence much harder to execute cleanly. The hook cooldown also dropped from 7 to 6 seconds in 5v5, so it fires more often but each pull creates less kill opportunity.
The Scrap Gun itself now fires in 2-burst volleys with ammo doubled from 6 to 12. Total volley damage increased from 175 to 204, but the critical damage multiplier dropped from 2x to 1.5x, and pellet count changed from 25 at 7 damage to 16 at 4.25 damage plus a 34-damage center projectile. Falloff range tightened from 30-50m down to 20-35m.
The new ability is Trash Compactor, which replaces the old secondary fire. Activate it and Roadhog absorbs incoming projectiles for 2 seconds, then fires an explosive shot dealing 75 to 200 damage based on 30% of what he absorbed. The explosion has a 2-meter inner radius and 6-meter outer radius. He moves 15% slower while absorbing. Cooldown is 10 seconds in 5v5, 11 seconds in 6v6.
Take a Breather also changed: max duration dropped from 3 to 2 seconds, but healing increased from 150 to 200 HP per second. You heal more per second but can't channel it as long.
His new perks: Here, Piggy Piggy (minor) reduces Chain Hook's cooldown by 80% during Whole Hog. Toxic Exhaust (major) slows enemies in front of an active Trash Compactor by 30% and deals 20 damage per second.
The Sombra and Roadhog reworks dominate the headlines, but several other heroes saw meaningful changes. Here's the full picture:
| Hero | Role | Change |
|---|---|---|
| D.Va | Tank | Micro Missiles fire rate up from 11 to 14 per second |
| Domina | Tank | Crystal Charge cooldown down to 7s; Reconstruction lifesteal up to 100% |
| Bastion | Damage | Reconfigure duration down from 6 to 5 seconds |
| Cassidy | Damage | High Noon can no longer attach to Jetpack Cat's Lifeline |
| Emre | Damage | Cyber Frag cooldown down from 10 to 9 seconds |
| Genji | Damage | Swift Strike damage up from 50 to 60; Dragonblade down from 110 to 100 but swings 15% faster |
| Shion | Damage | Rapid Reload perk replaced by Survival Instinct (adds 1s to Evade's overhealth) |
| Ana | Support | Groggy perk replaced by Local Anesthetic (Sleep Dart now explodes on impact, slows, deals 45 damage over 3s) |
| Lucio | Support | Sound Barrier duration back to 6 seconds; Beat Drop perk gives 4s of Amp It Up after casting |
The Genji changes are the ones to watch in competitive play. Swift Strike hitting for 60 instead of 50 is a 20% damage increase on one of the most mobile abilities in the game. Dragonblade losing 10 damage but gaining 15% swing speed is a net positive for skilled players who can land consistent hits.
Ana's Local Anesthetic perk is a genuine upgrade over Groggy. Sleep Dart that explodes on impact and deals 45 damage over 3 seconds turns a utility tool into a soft damage option.
Over 40 heroes received hitbox adjustments in Season 5. The goal was consistency, not a universal buff or nerf. To offset the larger hitboxes on most heroes, hitscan projectile sizes were reduced globally: large hitscan projectiles dropped from 0.07 to 0.04 meters, and small ones from 0.04 to 0.02 meters.
The practical result: aiming at different heroes should feel more consistent, but raw hitscan damage won't spike because the projectiles themselves are smaller. Most supports got larger heads. Zenyatta and Torbjorn are the only two heroes whose heads got smaller. Lucio's head hitbox jumped from 13.2 to 16, one of the bigger individual increases in the pass.
For competitive players, the Mauga torso width change (30 to 40) and the Doomfist leg increase (21 to 26) are the ones most likely to show up in match replays.
The new Escort map is now live in all queues. Set inside an Icelandic volcanic fissure, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn was depicted in the Breakout animated trailer and serves as the prison facility where Doctrine's story begins.
The annual Halloween Terror event is on pause this year. In its place, Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games runs for four weeks (October 6 to November 2, 2026). The mode blends Mystery Heroes' random hero assignment with a Stadium-style Powers system. Players are assigned a random role at match start, choose from three heroes within that role, and earn Powers each time they die or when a round transitions. Powers range from Common to Legendary, with abilities like Jump Scare (turns you into a Prop while out of combat) and Zomnic Summoner (throws a grenade that deploys a Zomnic on detonation). Format is Best-of-3 Control, 5v5, with guaranteed 1-2-2 role composition.
Halloween versions of Hollywood, Lijian Tower, and Château Guillard are active through November 3 across all queues.
Season 5 Halloween skins include Ghostly Belle Ashe, Ghost Bride Mei, and Jack O' Ripper Soldier: 76. For the full cosmetics picture, the Overwatch Season 5 Battle Pass guide has every skin and unlock method listed.
Battle Passes for all Legacy Seasons 1 through 15 are now purchasable under a new Unvaulted Battle Pass Tab. You can run one unvaulted pass alongside the current Season 5 pass at a time. Previous progress carries over on reactivation. The Season 4 pass specifically will not be available until the Season 5 midseason update.
Note the exclusions: Mythic Skins, Mythic Prisms, Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, and Player Titles cannot be earned from unvaulted passes. Standard Legendary and Epic skins are recoverable. Mythic-tier content remains locked to the season in which it was originally earned.
Top 500 now ranks players by actual Rank rather than Challenger Score. The Heat Bonus has been removed. Challenger Score still determines who qualifies for the leaderboard, but rank determines placement within it. For anyone who was grinding playtime to stay in the top 500, this is the biggest competitive change in the patch.
Stadium Quick Play has moved to Open Queue with role limits of 1 Tank, 2 Damage, and 3 Supports. Passive health earned from currency in Stadium dropped by 50%, pushing the mode toward more offensive itemization decisions.

Blizzard has confirmed the next major reveal event will be Overwatch Spotlight in February 2027, where the studio will lay out the narrative framework and content roadmap for the following year. Hero 55 was revealed at BlizzCon 2026 as an Omnic Support but received no name or ability details. That hero is expected to be part of the February 2027 roadmap.

Blizzard's developer notes explain it directly: Hack's core function was "jarring, frustrating, and difficult to deal with" from the opponent's perspective, and four previous reworks inside the Damage role failed to resolve that. The new Weaken status effect (applied through Cyberspace) debuffs an enemy's output by 50% without locking them out of their abilities. That's the design distinction Blizzard was aiming for.
The trial version was strong enough that Blizzard says he was overperforming relative to other supports. The Day One nerfs are meaningful, particularly the Deliverance duration dropping to 6 seconds and Shrouded Momentum losing crit immunity. He's still a mobile support with a unique Infuse mechanic and a strong ultimate. Whether he settles into a dominant or merely viable position will become clear over the first few weeks of the season.
Yes, but not as reliably or as instantly. The combo is harder to execute because the pulled target lands 4.5 meters away instead of 3, and the stun window is 0.3 seconds instead of 0.4. He can still kill with follow-up fire, but the "hook into instant kill" sequence that made him frustrating to face since launch has been specifically targeted. Trash Compactor gives him a new threat vector that rewards staying in the fight and absorbing damage.
The Shadow Monarch collab skins (Genji x Sung Jinwoo, Reaper x Igris, Anran x Cha Hae-In, Reinhardt x Iron, Lifeweaver x Choi Jong-In) were available from October 6 to October 19. Halloween event skins include Ghostly Belle Ashe, Ghost Bride Mei, and Jack O' Ripper Soldier: 76. Mythic skins this season are Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang and Treblemaker Lucio weapon skin.
