Sombra is no longer a Damage hero. The October 6, 2026 Season 5 update moved her to Support, replaced Hack and Virus with two entirely new abilities, and gave her a passive that hands your team genuine fight-winning information. If you played old Sombra and are expecting the same assassin playstyle with a healing button tacked on, you are going to have a bad time. The job description has changed.

Hotfix charge and cooldown UI
Blizzard kept the Machine Pistol, Translocator, Stealth, and EMP. Everything else was rebuilt. Hack no longer silences enemies as a normal combat ability, and Virus is completely gone. In their place, Sombra gets Hotfix for targeted ally healing and Cyberspace for area-of-effect healing, damage, and the new Weaken debuff. Her passive swaps from Opportunist to Conspirator, which reveals enemies whose ultimates are fully charged.
She also moves from the Recon subrole to Tactician, which means she counts as an additional ally when progressing an objective. That is a small but real incentive to stay connected to the team instead of spending every fight in the enemy backline.
Here is a quick comparison of what stayed and what changed:
| Feature | Old Sombra | Season 5 Sombra |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Damage / Recon | Support / Tactician |
| Hack | Silenced enemy abilities | Removed from normal kit |
| Virus | Single-target damage over time | Replaced by Cyberspace |
| Healing | None | Hotfix + Cyberspace |
| Enemy debuff | Ability silence | Weaken: 50% less damage and healing output |
| Passive | Opportunist | Conspirator reveals charged enemy ultimates |
| EMP hack | Yes | Yes (now Sombra's main way to hack enemies) |
Hotfix is assigned to Secondary Fire by default and replaces Hack as Sombra's main ally-targeting tool. It places a healing effect on a teammate up to 17 meters away.
The ability immediately restores 65 health, then continues at 25 health per second until the target has received 175 total healing or 12 seconds have passed. Sombra carries 2 charges, and each charge has an 8-second cooldown with a 0.5-second cast time.
The key detail most players miss: Hotfix can be placed before an ally takes damage. Putting a charge on Winston or Genji before they dive means the healing is already running when the fight starts. You are not scrambling to react after the fact.
Sombra can also cast Hotfix while Stealthed. Doing so briefly reveals her but does not cancel Stealth, so she can support teammates while repositioning without fully committing to a visible position.
Hotfix also retains a version of the old hacking utility. Targeting health packs or most enemy deployables does not consume a charge and uses a separate 6-second cooldown. Hacked health packs stay hacked for 30 seconds. Taking damage during a hack attempt interrupts it, so do not try to disable a deployable while standing in the open.
Cyberspace replaces Virus and is the ability that makes the new Sombra genuinely dangerous in a teamfight rather than just useful. Sombra fires a projectile that explodes on impact and creates a 5-meter zone lasting 3 seconds.
The explosion itself deals 40 damage to enemies and 40 healing to allies on impact. While the zone is active, it deals 25 damage per second to enemies and heals allies for 30 health per second. Every enemy standing inside the zone is Weakened.
| Cyberspace stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Initial enemy damage | 40 |
| Initial ally healing | 40 |
| Damage per second | 25 |
| Healing per second | 30 |
| Duration | 3 seconds |
| Radius | 5 meters |
| Weaken effect | 50% less damage and healing output |
Weaken is the real prize here. An enemy inside Cyberspace deals half as much damage and generates half as much healing. Drop it where your tank is fighting their tank, or where multiple heroes are contesting an objective, and you are healing your team while cutting the enemy's output at the same time. That is a two-for-one trade that old Sombra simply could not offer.
The mistake most players make is throwing Cyberspace at the first isolated enemy they see. Save it for moments where the zone will overlap both teams. One well-placed Cyberspace during a Reinhardt swing or a Reaper Death Blossom does more work than three perfectly aimed shots at a solo target.
Opportunist is gone. Conspirator reveals enemies whose ultimates are fully charged, and only Sombra sees this information by default. A good Sombra player treats that as a responsibility, not a bonus.
Knowing an enemy Reaper, Kiriko, or Junker Queen is sitting on a full ultimate lets your team spread out, hold defensive cooldowns, or bait that player into a bad position before committing. Sombra players who ignore this and stay quiet are throwing away one of the most useful pieces of information a Support can carry.
Combined with Cyberspace's ability to reduce ultimate effectiveness mid-cast, Conspirator gives Sombra a genuine answer to fight-ending ultimates without requiring her EMP to be ready.
The rework has only just gone live as of Season 5, so treat these as early recommendations rather than a settled meta verdict.
Life Hack makes EMP apply Hotfix to all nearby allies. This turns EMP into a two-sided teamfight ability: enemies get disrupted while your team receives healing simultaneously. In coordinated play, this is almost always the stronger pick.
CTRL ALT ESC starts passive health regeneration when Sombra teleports while below half health. It is the right call when you are being heavily pressured or playing a more independent style where you regularly escape with low HP.
Best for most players: Life Hack.
Cybersecurity doubles Cyberspace's healing on allies below half health. This directly amplifies Sombra's most important teamfight ability and makes it much harder for the enemy team to finish off a low-health ally inside the zone.
Data Packet reduces Hotfix's main cooldown by 4 seconds whenever Sombra hacks a health pack. Its value depends entirely on map layout and whether you can build health pack hacks into your rotation without abandoning your team.
Best for most players: Cybersecurity. Data Packet gets more interesting on maps where useful health packs sit close to the main fight.
The biggest habit to unlearn from old Sombra is disappearing into the enemy backline for long stretches while your team fights without you. As a Support, you need to be available. A Sombra who is invisible and unreachable when Hotfix or Cyberspace would win a fight is actively hurting her team.
Here is the short answer: use Stealth and Translocator to reach useful angles, not to live behind the enemy team permanently.
Core principles:
A useful check: ask whether your current flank is helping the fight your team is actually in. If the answer is no, you are probably too far away.

Translocator side angle setup
Hotfix your dive tank (Winston, Doomfist, Wrecking Ball) before they enter. Follow from a different angle and drop Cyberspace on the target they are pressuring. The enemy is now fighting while Weakened, and your diver is receiving both Hotfix healing and Cyberspace healing at the same time.
When an enemy dives your backline, do not automatically run. Dropping Cyberspace on your own Supports or Damage heroes reduces the attacker's damage while healing your team. This is often more valuable than using Cyberspace offensively at the start of the fight.
With Life Hack selected, EMP becomes a two-sided button. Use it when both teams are already committed, not from maximum range before the fight starts. You want the enemy disruption and the allied Hotfix to land at the same moment.
The rework is brand new, so no fixed meta composition has settled yet. That said, the kit clearly favors specific teammate types.
Dive tanks are natural partners. Winston, Doomfist, and Wrecking Ball can receive Hotfix before they engage, then benefit from Cyberspace once they are on the target. Sombra does not need to stand next to them to provide both forms of healing.
Mobile Damage heroes like Genji, Tracer, and Venture work for the same reason. Hotfix helps them survive the opening seconds of an engagement while Weaken makes the target's counterattack far less dangerous.
A reliable second Support is practically mandatory. Sombra's healing is ability-gated, meaning she has no passive healing output between Hotfix charges and Cyberspace cooldowns. A Support with consistent neutral healing covers that gap and lets Sombra focus on disruption and positioning.
The shorter Translocator range (12.25 meters, down from 18) and longer cooldown (7.5 seconds, up from 6) are the most exploitable weaknesses in the reworked kit.
Fast heroes that can chase her after a teleport are dangerous. Winston and D.Va can follow a poor escape quickly, while mobile Damage heroes can punish Sombra if she teleports without reaching real cover. Close-range peel from Brigitte-style heroes also makes aggressive side angles harder to hold.
The most effective counterplay is not simply revealing Sombra. It is forcing her Translocator, tracking where she lands, and punishing her before the 7.5-second cooldown returns. Teams that deny her access to positions where Cyberspace overlaps both sides of the fight remove a significant portion of her value.
Sombra players should respond by teleporting toward actual cover rather than throwing Translocator as far as possible just to escape.
Neither label fits cleanly. Blizzard replaced her job, not just her numbers.
Her individual kill pressure is clearly lower. Machine Pistol damage dropped from 8 to 7 per projectile, Virus is gone, regular Hack no longer disables enemies, and EMP arrives far less often. On the other hand, Sombra now has tools that can swing an entire fight. Hotfix provides real ally sustain, Cyberspace heals and damages simultaneously, Weaken cuts an enemy's output in half, and Conspirator gives your team advance warning on fight-ending ultimates.
Whether the rework is stronger overall will depend on win rates, perk choices, and how quickly players learn to use Weaken placement correctly. After testing the new kit across several matches, averaging around 8,000 healing per game is realistic for most players, with more experienced Sombra players pushing past 10,000 healing alongside meaningful damage numbers. The Season 5 meta is still developing.

Is Sombra a Support hero now? Yes. She moved from Damage to Support with the Season 5 rework on October 6, 2026, and sits in the Tactician subrole.
Can Sombra still Hack enemies? Not with her normal abilities. Regular Hack has been removed from her standard kit. EMP still Hacks enemies, making it Sombra's only way to lock down abilities.
Can Sombra still hack health packs? Yes. Hotfix can target health packs without consuming one of its two ally-healing charges, using a separate 6-second cooldown. Hacked packs stay hacked for 30 seconds.
What does Weaken do? Enemies inside Cyberspace are Weakened, reducing their damage output and healing output by 50% while they remain in the zone.
Does Sombra still have Stealth? Yes, though she no longer has a permanent Stealth passive. Using Translocator grants Stealth for up to 6.5 seconds. Entering Stealth now takes 0.75 seconds after teleporting.
What are the best Sombra perks right now? Early recommendations are Life Hack for the Minor Perk and Cybersecurity for the Major Perk. CTRL ALT ESC is worth considering if you are taking a lot of personal pressure, and Data Packet becomes viable on maps with accessible health packs near the main fight.
