Overwatch Doctrine Guide: Abilities, Perks, and Best Build
Master Doctrine in Overwatch Season 5 with this full breakdown of his abilities, Infuse mechanics, perks, and ranked tips.
Doctrine is Overwatch's newest Support hero, a vampire-inspired former cyberneticist from Zimbabwe who fights with a bat-drone army and an Eternal Scepter. His kit is built around a single mechanic called Infuse, and how well you manage those two charges determines whether you're a liability or the reason your team wins fights. He rewards players who treat Support as an active, aggressive role rather than a healing station at the back of the map.
Before getting into the specifics, here's a full breakdown of what Doctrine brings to a team fight.
| Ability | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Eternal Scepter | Primary Fire | Mid-range weapon that damages enemies and heals allies. Infused shots deal increased damage and healing. |
| Infuse | Secondary Fire | Empowers Doctrine's next ability. Two charges available. |
| Shrouded Momentum | Shift | Rushes horizontally with 40% damage reduction. Infused version grants free flight. |
| Invigorating Drones | E | Deploys drones to an ally, healing them and boosting attack speed by 30%. Infused version also sends drones to Doctrine. |
| Deliverance | Ultimate | Releases a drone swarm that reduces enemy max health while granting allies up to 150 Overhealth. |
| Survivor | Passive | Using a movement ability immediately triggers passive health regeneration. |

Overwatch Doctrine Guide: Abilities, Perks & Tips
Eternal Scepter is the core of Doctrine's identity as a mid-range Support. The weapon heals allies and damages enemies depending on where you aim, and the damage or healing output scales with distance, so both drop off at long range. Infused shots hit harder and heal more, making them worth saving for moments when a teammate is in serious trouble or an enemy is close to dying.
The key habit to build is constant output. When your allies are healthy, aim at enemies. When the enemy team backs off, swing back to healing. Doctrine's weapon encourages you to stay active at all times rather than waiting for someone to take damage before you start firing.

Infuse has two charges and modifies whichever ability you use it with. The problem most new Doctrine players run into is burning both charges on Shrouded Momentum or primary fire bursts and then having nothing left when Invigorating Drones comes off cooldown.
The guiding principle: always have at least one Infuse charge ready to pair with Invigorating Drones. Since Drones has roughly twice the cooldown of Infuse, you can spend one or two charges between each Drone use on primary fire bursts or a repositioning rush without falling behind. Empowering Drones every time they're available is the single biggest difference between a good and bad Doctrine.
Shrouded Momentum is a survival tool first and a repositioning tool second. The 40% damage reduction during the rush is meaningful, and triggering it also activates the Survivor passive, so Doctrine begins regenerating health immediately after using it. That combination makes it a reliable way to recover after taking unexpected damage.
The Infused version grants full flight, which opens up high-ground positions and lets Doctrine escape grounded enemies who would otherwise chase him down. Reserve the flight version for situations where you genuinely need vertical movement. Using it just to move around faster wastes an Infuse charge that would have more value on Drones.

Overwatch Doctrine Guide: Abilities, Perks & Tips
The biggest trap with this ability: using it during a fight rather than before one. Doctrine cannot attack or use other abilities while rushing. Any enemy who watches for the animation knows they have a free window to close distance and pressure him before the cooldown resets. Use Shrouded Momentum to set up position before a fight breaks out, not as a panic button mid-engagement.
Invigorating Drones is what makes Doctrine genuinely dangerous to play against rather than just another healer. The 30% attack speed increase is unique among Supports, and attaching drones to the right teammate at the right moment can swing a fight that looked even or slightly losing.
The best targets are allies who are about to commit aggressively: a Tank walking into the enemy frontline, a flanking DPS like Genji or Tracer about to dive, or a Bastion entering Assault mode. The passive healing keeps them alive longer while the attack speed boost lets them output more damage during the window they have. Heroes like Reaper benefit particularly well because their entire kit relies on primary fire, which is exactly what the attack speed buff amplifies.
When Infused, Doctrine also receives drones himself. This matters most when a flanker is targeting him directly. Instead of burning Shrouded Momentum to escape, deploying Infused Drones lets Doctrine fight back with increased attack speed and self-sustain, making him a much less appealing dive target than enemies expect.
Drones should be treated as a flexible offensive resource rather than a permanent pocket for one teammate. Whoever is in the best position to deal damage right now is the right Drone target.
Deliverance works in two directions. Offensively, you fire it into a choke point or objective area where the enemy team is forced to fight, reducing their maximum health while your team pushes with the Overhealth advantage. Defensively, it counters aggressive ultimates, particularly something like Ana's Nano Boost, by granting your team up to 150 Overhealth and shrinking the empowered enemy's effective health pool simultaneously.
The AoE moves slowly, so placement matters. Shooting it somewhere the enemy team can easily walk around wastes the ultimate entirely. Objective areas and tight choke points where enemies have to commit are the right calls. Pairing Deliverance with an allied ultimate, like a Tank's engage, creates a combined threat that forces the enemy team to react on two fronts at once.
Saving Grace adds a burst heal to Invigorating Drones, which can be the difference between saving a teammate before the healing-over-time kicks in. The self-drones version of this perk also benefits from it. The downside is that Drones have a long cooldown, so the burst heal is infrequent.
Sanguine Siphon improves Doctrine's self-sustain, which his base kit lacks. This is especially valuable in matchups where you're regularly getting targeted by dive heroes, since it reduces how much pressure you put on your second Support to keep you alive.
Transfusion is the recommended pick. Every point of healing or damage dealt reduces the Infuse cooldown, which means more consistent Infused Drones, more self-sustain, and more flexibility to empower other abilities without falling behind on the cycle. The higher APM playstyle this enables is what separates Doctrine from other Supports.
Cost of Life adds extra healing but reduces Doctrine's maximum health, which is a punishing trade given how aim-intensive his kit already is. The extra sustain output rarely compensates for the survivability loss, and you're giving up increased Infuse uptime to get it.
Doctrine fits cleanest into Brawl, Rush, and mid-range Poke compositions where teammates stay within his line of sight and drone range. Spread-out Dive comps make it harder for him to maintain consistent healing, manage Drone targets, and protect himself.
For Tanks, frontline brawlers like Reinhardt, Ramattra, Mauga, and Junker Queen are ideal. They stay close, occupy enemy attention, and give Doctrine a stable position behind them to operate from. Attaching drones to a Reinhardt swinging his Rocket Hammer faster is a straightforward way to tilt a Tank fight.
For Support pairings, Kiriko and Mizuki work particularly well. Both can provide burst healing and defensive utility (Protection Suzu or Binding Chain) that cover for Doctrine when he's playing aggressively. Check out the Overwatch Mizuki guide covering abilities, perks and playstyle for more on how Mizuki fits into double-Support compositions.
Doctrine's vulnerability window is predictable once you know what to look for. He's most exposed right after using Shrouded Momentum, since he can't attack or use abilities during the rush and has no other escape tool available. If you see him commit the rush, that's the moment to close distance and force a fight before the cooldown resets.
His effectiveness depends heavily on maintaining line of sight to both allies and enemies. Playing from longer range, using natural cover, and attacking from multiple angles all disrupt his ability to cycle between healing and damage. Breaking his LoS consistently limits both his Scepter output and his Drone targeting.
Avoid diving Doctrine when his Shrouded Momentum and Invigorating Drones cooldowns are both available. He can fly away and waste your mobility cooldown, or respond with Infused Drones and fight back more effectively than most Supports can. Wait until you've confirmed at least one of those abilities is on cooldown before fully committing.
Doctrine is one of the more mechanically demanding Supports added to the roster, but his ceiling is genuinely high for players willing to manage Infuse carefully.
