Planet Zoo 2 puts a serious amount of depth into how your zoo grows over time, and the research system sits right at the center of that progression. Rather than handing you everything from the start, Planet Zoo 2 gates key animal behaviors, disease treatments, and enrichment items behind a knowledge system that rewards players who spread their focus strategically. Understanding how it all connects will save you a lot of frustration early on.

What is the research system in Planet Zoo 2?

Research represents the growing expertise of your zoo's staff. As your team studies animals, diseases, and educational topics, they unlock practical benefits: new items become available, animal care improves, and your zoo's educational output expands. This is not just a cosmetic progression layer. Without completing the relevant research, you cannot access an animal's Thriving requirements, meaning your animals will plateau well below their potential welfare scores.

One notable change from the original Planet Zoo is the removal of mechanic research. All building and construction items are available from the start, which removes a lot of early friction. The locked content that remains is more meaningful: animal enrichment items and educational areas both require dedicated research before you can place them.

How many research topics are there?

The total count is significant. Across all four research types, there are over 217 individual topics to work through. The breakdown by type gives you a clearer picture of where to direct your attention.

Research TypeTotal TopicsWhat It Unlocks
Species136Thriving requirements, Release Groups, breeding boosts, educational content
Disease52Advanced Diagnosis, Advanced Treatment, Advanced Pharmacology
Enrichment22Toy and Food Enrichment items grouped by type
Education7Educational topics, ambience sounds, interactive stations

Species research is by far the largest category, which makes sense given the scope of animals available. Disease research follows with 52 conditions, each split across three stages of discovery.

All four research types

Species research (136 topics)

Species research is the foundation of animal care in Planet Zoo 2. Each of the 136 animals has its own research track, and completing it unlocks that animal's Thriving requirements, which are the specific conditions needed to push welfare scores to their maximum. Beyond welfare, species research also unlocks Release Groups for eligible animals, breeding boosts, and educational content tied to that species.

Prioritize species research for the animals already in your zoo before branching out. An animal you cannot properly care for is a welfare liability and a reputation risk.

Disease research (52 topics)

Disease research runs in three distinct stages for each of the 52 conditions in the game. The three stages unlock Advanced Diagnosis, Advanced Treatment, and Advanced Pharmacology in sequence. Skipping disease research is a gamble that tends to pay off badly once an outbreak hits a crowded exhibit.

Enrichment research (22 topics)

Unlike the original Planet Zoo, enrichment research in Planet Zoo 2 is grouped by enrichment type rather than by individual species. This means researching a category like Frozen Food-Based Enrichments unlocks those items across multiple animals at once, making this category more efficient to complete than it might initially appear. There are 22 enrichment topics total, split between Toy and Food Enrichment item groups.

Education research (7 topics)

With only 7 topics, education research is the smallest category but should not be ignored. These topics unlock additional educational displays, ambience sounds, and interactive stations for your guests. Some educational content is also tied directly to specific animal research tracks, so completing species research will occasionally unlock education topics as a secondary reward.

What should you research first?

The most efficient starting approach is to focus Species research on every animal currently in your zoo, then run Disease research in parallel as your vet staff capacity allows. Enrichment research is worth picking up in batches since the type-based grouping means a single completed topic benefits multiple exhibits at once.

Education research can come later unless you are actively trying to improve your guest education rating, in which case unlocking interactive stations early pays dividends.

Does research carry over between modes?

Research sharing only applies in Franchise Mode, where progress transfers across all your zoo locations. In other modes, research is local to each individual zoo. This makes Franchise Mode significantly more rewarding for players who want to build out a deep research library without repeating the same topics from scratch.

If you want to know exactly when you can start building your research foundation, the Planet Zoo 2 release date and start times guide covers launch timing across all platforms.

After testing the system across multiple zoo configurations, the research loop in Planet Zoo 2 is genuinely well-paced. The removal of mechanic research eliminates the early-game bottleneck that frustrated players in the original, and the shift to type-based enrichment research makes that category feel purposeful rather than exhausting. The 136-species track is a long-term commitment, but the payoff in animal welfare and breeding output makes it worth the investment.
