Planet Zoo 2 takes conservation seriously, and releasing animals is one of the most rewarding mechanics in the game. You're not just building exhibits and keeping guests happy. There's a whole layer of wildlife management that plays out beyond your zoo's fences, and knowing how to navigate it properly makes a real difference in how your campaign progresses.

The two ways to release animals in Planet Zoo 2

There are two distinct release methods in Planet Zoo 2, and they serve very different purposes. One is a quick, permanent farewell. The other sends your animals into a Wildlife Reserve where you can track their milestones. Understanding which to use and when saves you from accidentally parting ways with an animal you needed for a Release Group.

How do you release animals directly in Planet Zoo 2?

The simplest method works through an individual animal's profile screen, the same screen that shows comfort levels and key stats. A button along the bottom of that screen lets you release the animal immediately, and you receive Conservation Credits in return.

Two conditions apply before that button becomes usable. The animal must be a fully grown adult, and it cannot be one you purchased with real in-game cash. Animals you bred or acquired through other means are eligible. Hit the button, collect your credits, and the animal is gone permanently. You won't be able to follow what happens to it after that point.

How do Wildlife Reserve releases work in Planet Zoo 2?

Sending animals to a Wildlife Reserve is the more involved route, and it's where the conservation side of Planet Zoo 2 really opens up. Once released to a reserve, you can follow the animal's journey and hit key milestones tied to its new life in the wild.

The process starts with Release Groups. Each species has its own Release Group requirements, and these vary significantly. Some animals can be released solo, while others need multiple individuals of specific genders before the group qualifies. You'll need to check the exact requirements for each species rather than assuming a single animal is always enough.

How do you unlock Release Groups in Planet Zoo 2?

Release Group information isn't available from the start. You have to research it first. For most species, the Release Group details become accessible at the fourth research level for that animal. Prioritizing research early means you'll know what you need to build toward before you're sitting on a surplus of animals with no plan.

The game stores up to 200 separate Release Groups, so running out of slots is unlikely to be a problem even in a large, well-developed zoo.

Completing at least one Release Group for a species also unlocks further research progress. Many animals have a research gate that blocks advancement until you've completed that first release, so it's tied directly into the broader research loop, not just a side activity.

What should you prioritize first?

For players focused on scenario completion and conservation ratings, Wildlife Reserve releases are the path worth investing in. The milestone tracking and research gate unlocks make them essential for long-term progression. Direct releases are better suited for population management when you have more animals than your enclosures can comfortably support.

Building a steady pipeline means researching species early, planning your enclosures around breeding pairs or groups that meet Release Group requirements, and keeping an eye on gender ratios if a species needs mixed groups.
