Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Guide: Best Skills You Should Unlock First

Sophia's skill tree in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is compact by design, just six skill branches with two mastery options each, but the choices you make early carry real weight. Resonance Points are limited in the opening chapters, and the cost of each new branch scales up fast. Spend them without a plan and you'll feel it when combat gets aggressive. This guide breaks down which skills to prioritize, which masteries are worth the extra points, and how to adjust your build around the way you actually play.

How does the Resonance Point system work?

Resonance Points are Sophia's skill currency, and they come from two sources. Most are found as glowing orange seashell-shaped pickups scattered through the environment, some on the critical path and others tucked into corners you'd only find by exploring. A smaller number are awarded automatically after specific combat encounters tied to the story, so those can't be missed.

The total available across the entire game is 200 Resonance Points. Unlocking every skill branch and every mastery costs exactly 165. That means you can technically miss up to 35 points and still complete the full tree, but the buffer is thinner than it sounds.

warning
Resonance Points do not carry over through Chapter Select. They save at checkpoints, which means points collected since your last checkpoint can be lost if you die before reaching the next one. Reloading an earlier chapter also resets your total to what it was when you originally passed that chapter.

Here's how the point costs break down across the six skill branches:

The practical takeaway: pick up Resonance Points whenever you see them rather than planning to sweep them up later.

What are the best skills to unlock first?

There are five skills that require Resonance Point investment, plus the Focus Attack which unlocks automatically. The priority order below works for most players on a first playthrough, but your personal playstyle should shift things around. The table gives a quick reference before the detailed breakdown.

Aegean Deflect

Aegean Deflect is the strongest early investment for players comfortable with parry timing. A perfectly timed parry already builds stagger on enemies, but this skill doubles the stun damage from those last-moment deflections. That acceleration matters because staggering enemies faster means more critical strike windows and less time taking damage.

The base skill is good. The masteries are what make it exceptional. One mastery lets Sophia parry red attacks, which are normally dodge-only. Against Brute-type enemies whose movesets lean heavily on those slow, powerful red swings, this mastery effectively removes the need to switch between parrying and dodging entirely. The second mastery builds additional damage into your next sword attack after a successful deflect, which suits a more offensive parry style.

tip
For most players, the red-attack parry mastery is the better of the two choices. It expands Sophia's defensive options more meaningfully than the offensive alternative, especially on higher difficulties where Brutes appear more frequently.

Hero's Step

Hero's Step gives Sophia a second consecutive dodge, triggered by double-tapping the dodge input, with partial invulnerability during the movement. The practical value is simple: a single dodge gets you away from the immediate threat, but a second one gives you enough distance to actually reposition.

Combat encounters regularly push Sophia into situations where two enemies attack simultaneously, leaving almost no room to recover. Without the double dodge, you can find yourself cornered after the first evasion with nowhere to go. With it, you can cover significantly more ground and create the breathing room needed to reassess.

This is the recommended first pick for players still learning enemy patterns, and it's worth getting before the mid-game chapters where encounters become more aggressive.

Echo's Return

Echo's Return is the most unusual skill in the tree. When an enemy attacks Sophia, she can snatch that attacker and throw them into nearby enemies, dealing stun damage to the group. It converts incoming pressure from one enemy into crowd control against several.

The important limitation is that the base skill only works against normal attacks. Yellow and red attacks cannot trigger Echo's Return without the relevant mastery. Treat it as a situational tool for grouped enemies rather than a universal counter.

If you regularly find yourself surrounded and struggling to manage multiple attackers, move this higher in your order. If you're handling groups comfortably through parries and dodges, it can wait.

Bullbreaker Kick

Bullbreaker Kick upgrades Sophia's kick combo so that the second kick can push enemies even when they aren't stunned. That makes it consistently reliable for two specific situations: shield-carrying enemies who are otherwise difficult to break through, and any encounter near a cliff, ledge, or environmental hazard where a push means an instant kill.

The mastery that focuses on push reliability is the stronger general choice. The alternative increases stun damage when enemies collide with the environment or other enemies, which suits a more aggressive crowd-control setup but is more situational.

Fated Cast

Fated Cast lets Sophia store a picked-up throwable on her belt rather than using it immediately, then launch it later using R3. It's a genuine quality-of-life improvement for players who use environmental weapons frequently, but it doesn't improve Sophia's core defensive survival the way the other skills do. Save this for after you've covered the higher-priority options.

How does the Focus Attack work?

Focus Attack is separate from the Resonance Point skill system entirely. It unlocks automatically and doesn't require any spending. Sophia builds the Focus Gauge through combat actions including attacking, parrying, and dodging. When full, she can unleash a wide-area sweeping attack that hits multiple nearby enemies.

tip
Don't save the Focus Gauge exclusively for bosses. Its area of effect makes it particularly effective when you're surrounded by multiple enemies. Use it when it solves the encounter in front of you, not when you think a harder fight is coming.

What's the best build for a first playthrough?

For players who don't know their preferred style yet, the balanced progression below covers the most common combat problems without locking you into one approach.

Balanced order:

  • Aegean Deflect first, with the red-attack parry mastery
  • Hero's Step second
  • Echo's Return third
  • Bullbreaker Kick or Fated Cast depending on what's causing the most trouble

Parry-focused order:

  • Aegean Deflect, then Echo's Return, then Hero's Step, then Bullbreaker Kick

Dodge-focused order:

  • Hero's Step first, then Echo's Return, then Aegean Deflect, then Fated Cast

The good news is that none of these choices are permanent. You can respec your skill investment through the Skills menu at any point and redistribute your points into a different setup. There's no penalty for experimenting.

How do weapons and charms fit into your build?

Skills aren't the only way to shape how Sophia fights. Weapons found throughout the game each carry their own perks. Momentum Strike, for example, deals bonus damage after a successful critical strike, which pairs naturally with a parry-heavy build that generates critical opportunities through stagger. Stagger Blow makes the final hit of a combo deliver a powerful stun attack, reinforcing the same loop.

Charms work differently from both skills and weapons. They provide passive bonuses that are active automatically once found, and duplicate charms stack their effects. There are 30 charms in total, including five Pierced Coins that give a moderate chance of not emptying the Focus Gauge when used. Trinkets give Sophia a chance to survive a hit that would otherwise be lethal. Beads increase the chance that an archer's arrow misses entirely. These aren't major systems to optimize around, but they shift the odds in your favor in ways that compound over a full playthrough.

tip
Don't skip small charm chests because they aren't Resonance Points. Skills change what Sophia can do. Charms change how often things go wrong when she makes a mistake.

One thing most players miss

During certain flashback sequences, the game switches control to Theseus for larger combat encounters. Sophia's skill upgrades do not carry over to him. He has his own combat flow and his own Focus Attack. If you've grown accustomed to Sophia's upgraded defensive toolkit, especially the red-attack parry from Aegean Deflect, be careful when the game swaps characters. The fundamentals of parry timing, dodge timing, and attack color recognition still apply, but none of Sophia's unlocked abilities transfer.
