Baby Nessie is the standout companion of FischFright 3, and getting it takes more than just showing up at the right island. The Headless Horseman has three quests standing between you and this little green Loch Ness Monster, and the final one requires you to already own all three Nessie variants before he'll hand it over. Here's everything you need to know to finish the questline and make the most of what Baby Nessie offers.

Find the Horseman at chapel gate
How to reach the Headless Horseman
The questline starts at Caustic Hallow, which you can't sail to on your own. Head to the Moosewood docks and look for the Flying Dutchman NPC near his boat. Interact with him to get transported to the island.
Once you land, take a right past the Pumpkin King NPC and walk straight until you cross the river and reach the Ritual site. Climb the cliff behind it and you'll find the Chapel Gate with the Headless Horseman standing in front of it. Talk to him to begin the questline.
How to complete all three Headless Horseman quests
Quest 1: The Rescue Run
This is the introduction to the questline and also the one that catches players off guard. Enter the chapel and locate Baby Nessie inside. Pick it up, but here's the catch: the lights in the chapel flicker, and if you move while they're flickering, you get teleported back outside.
The strategy is simple but requires patience. Pick up Baby Nessie, then hold still whenever the lights start flickering. Wait for them to stabilize, move a bit, then stop again when the next flicker hits. Work your way to the exit this way and return to the Headless Horseman.
Reward: 3 Frightful Caskets and 500 Treats.
Quest 2: Stabilizing the Chapel
For this quest, you need to catch five FischFright-mutated fish in a row while fishing inside the chapel during its flicker. The flicker window is short, which is what makes this annoying.
The key detail: if you catch a fish without a FischFright mutation, you can release it without breaking your streak. Only catching zero fish or catching a non-mutated fish and keeping it will reset your count. Use FischFright 3 Relics if you have them, since they directly improve your mutation chances during this window.
Reward: 5 Frightful Caskets and 825 Treats.
Quest 3: Nessie Expertise
This is the real gate. The Headless Horseman asks you to show him a Plush Nessie, a Zombie Nessie, and a Ghoul Nessie before he trusts you with Baby Nessie. You need all three in your possession simultaneously.
If you haven't caught these yet, check the full guide to catching all Nessie variants in FischFright 3 for exact bait requirements, ritual steps, and Treat costs. Once you have all three, return to the Headless Horseman (now inside the chapel), show them to him, and Baby Nessie is yours.

What does Baby Nessie actually do?
Baby Nessie is a fishing companion built around FischFright mutations and progress speed. Its passive abilities scale with the time of day and improve at Level 10.
Progress speed bonus
Baby Nessie grants up to 25% additional progress speed, but the amount isn't flat. Smaller fish and fish with higher resilience get more benefit from it. Larger fish with lower resilience get less. This makes Baby Nessie particularly useful when farming smaller, stubborn catches rather than going after trophy-sized fish.
Mutation chances
The mutation bonuses are where Baby Nessie shines during the FischFright event. Here's the full breakdown:
| Mutation | Base Chance | Chance at Level 10 | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jack-o' | 7.3% | 10.5% | 9.5x |
| Doomed | 4.4% | 6.3% | 6x |
| Grim | 4.4% | 6.3% | 6x |
| Vile | 4.4% | 6.3% | 6x |
| Eldritch | 1.4% | 2.1% | 7x |
Getting Baby Nessie to Level 10 is worth prioritizing. The jump from base to Level 10 is meaningful across every mutation type, and the Jack-o' multiplier of 9.5x makes it the standout pick for players farming that specific mutation.
Day vs. night: does timing matter?
Yes, and by a noticeable margin. Baby Nessie's abilities run at 110% strength during nighttime and drop to 90% during the day. For mutation farming specifically, that 20% swing between day and night is worth paying attention to. If you're trying to land an Eldritch mutation at 2.1% (Level 10), every bit of uptime matters.
Plan your Stabilizing the Chapel quest and post-unlock mutation grinding around nighttime sessions when possible.
How to find the other Nessie variants for the final quest
The Nessie Expertise quest blocks a lot of players because catching all three Nessie variants isn't trivial. Plush Nessie, Zombie Nessie, and Ghoul Nessie each have different unlock paths. If you're still working on Plush Nessie specifically, the dedicated Plush Nessie farming guide covers guaranteed methods, the best bait, and exact drop rates.
