Shift At Midnight drops you behind a convenience store counter and asks you to figure out who's human and who isn't before the lights go out. Miss a fake, and whatever you let walk out the door comes back after closing time with a lot more legs. This guide covers every doppelganger tell, all six entity variants, and exactly how to stay alive once the hunt begins.

How do you identify doppelgangers in Shift At Midnight?

Some fakes are impossible to miss. A naked man rolling through the aisles or a well-mannered bear waiting in line are pretty clear tells. Most of the time, though, the clues are subtler, and that's where players get caught out.

The core tool at your disposal is the NET Database, which lets you cross-reference customer IDs against their stated details. Every legitimate ID has a barcode. If someone hands over a document without one, that's your first red flag. For customers who refuse to hand over their ID at all, you can run their passport or driving license through the computer to pull their records.

Once you have their details, question them on three things: date of birth, occupation, and appearance. Doppelgangers will slip up. They might claim a scar is on the left side of their face when the ID says right, or describe a job that doesn't match what's on file. Skin color mismatches between the person in front of you and their ID photo are another common tell.

One detail that removes all doubt: if the system confirms the person you're currently serving is deceased, you're not talking to a human.

warning
Letting any doppelganger leave the store doesn't just end the threat for that shift. It strengthens the entities that show up after closing and adds that doppelganger to the post-shift hunt roster.

All entity types and how to counter them

Miss a doppelganger during your shift and they come back as a monster variant once you're locking up. You get 60 seconds when this happens. Use that time to arm yourself, nail wooden planks onto the three doors by pressing E, and set traps at each entrance. When the timer hits zero, entities spawn in.

There are six entity variants to know. Each follows its own rules, and treating them all the same will get you killed.

The Demented is worth calling out specifically. It works on the same principle as SCP-173: direct eye contact freezes it, but the moment you look away it closes the gap fast. Use that predictability to funnel it into a trap rather than trying to outrun it.

The Marionette is the only entity you can prevent from spawning at all. The music box is on the shop floor. Rewind it before the song completes its third loop and the Marionette never appears. Ignore it and you're dealing with a cloaked floater on top of everything else.

What happens during a Blood Moon?

A Blood Moon guarantees entities spawn after the shift ends. Venturing outside will trigger one of the hunt events. Each entity that appears gives you an on-screen instruction telling you the specific rule you need to follow to survive it. Read it immediately.

Before your shift starts, check the notes left on the counter and read through any new emails. These entries tell you which threats are active that night, giving you time to plan your approach rather than reacting blind when something crawls out of the dark.

How does the patience bar work?

During the post-shift hunt, a patience bar sits at the top of the screen. Think of it as The Entity's will to keep searching. An eye icon fills when you're in its line of sight. If that eye turns red, The Entity is actively pursuing you.

Duck behind cover the moment the eye starts filling and you can reset the meter. Audio matters just as much as visibility. Footsteps and open microphone noise both register. Stay quiet, stay out of sight, and the bar drains over time.

Hiding spots are ventilation shafts scattered through the stockroom and shop floor. They're not permanent safe zones. A mass will descend through the shaft after a while, dealing damage and forcing you back out. Use them to break line of sight, not to camp indefinitely.

The Weapons Arsenal unlocks once the patience bar reaches its halfway point. Your standard firearm does minimal damage, so purchase stronger weapons through the computer before the shift ends. The Emergency Weapons Arsenal gives access to those pre-purchased weapons when things escalate. If multiple entities spawn at once because several doppelgangers slipped through, you'll need that firepower.

important
Entities that survive a night come back stronger in future shifts. Killing doppelgangers during the day keeps post-shift encounters manageable. The longer you let fakes accumulate, the harder each subsequent hunt becomes.

Story Mode vs Endless Mode: does it matter for entities?

Entities appear in both Story Mode and Endless Mode. The core mechanics stay consistent across both, but Endless Mode keeps the pressure building as you push further. The same entity counters apply regardless of which mode you're playing, so the strategies here carry over directly.

For more tactics and walkthroughs covering every part of the game, the Shift At Midnight guides collection has you covered. If you enjoy this kind of tense indie games experience where survival depends on reading people rather than raw combat, there's a lot more worth exploring in the genre.
