The Jack-in-the-Box Music Box is one of the most punishing mechanics in Shift At Midnight because it hides in plain sight. Miss it, and you are not facing a game-over screen. You are facing a Marionette that gets faster the more you shoot it. This guide covers where to find the box, how to rewind it reliably, and exactly how to approach the fight if you are hunting the Last Performance achievement.
What is the Music Box mechanic?
The Jack-in-the-Box Music Box and the Marionette are two separate things. The Music Box is a small floor-level object that plays a warning song. The Marionette is the creature that emerges if that song completes three times without a rewind.
This mechanic starts from Shift 9 onward. Before that, you will not encounter it.
Rewinding the box is the correct play for any standard Story Mode run. Deliberately skipping the rewind is only worth doing when you are prepared for the Marionette fight.

Music Box near trash clutter
Where does the Music Box spawn?
The box sits close to the floor and blends into surrounding objects. Confirmed hiding spots include:
- Shelf bases and aisle ends
- Gaps between shelving and walls
- Beside trash bags and bins
- Around checkout counter clutter
- Beneath visually busy floor areas
There is no single guaranteed spawn point. The box has been confirmed beside trash-bin clutter and along the main store floor, but a fixed location list does not exist. Build a search route around known clutter types rather than heading straight to one corner.
The fast search route
Start from wherever you are when the music begins:
- Inside the store: Nearest aisle first, scan one side going down and the opposite side coming back, then checkout base, shelf ends, trash-bin clutter, rear route, back room, bathroom side.
- Outside or at the gas pump: Drop the vehicle task immediately. Enter through the closest door and follow the same aisle-to-checkout-to-rear sequence.
- Near the back room: Reverse the route. Start with back room and bathroom side, then work toward the trash area and checkout before hitting the main aisles.
Finish one complete loop in a single direction. Changing direction every time the song sounds different wastes time and creates duplicate checks.
Can you use sound to locate the Music Box?
The song confirms the event is active, but directional audio has not proven reliable enough to use as a compass. Stereo volume differences, rooms with louder audio, and distance indicators have not been confirmed as consistent mechanics.
Use the song as a deadline, not navigation. Follow your floor-search route based on your current position and which areas remain unchecked.

Completing the rewind interaction
How to rewind the Music Box correctly
Finding the box is only half the job. The rewind must fully complete:
- Approach until the interaction prompt appears.
- Lower the camera and face the box directly.
- Begin the rewind without stepping back.
- Let the full interaction finish.
- Confirm the box disappears from the floor.
The box disappearing is the only reliable confirmation the rewind registered. Do not leave because the prompt appeared, an animation started, or the song briefly changed. If the box is still on the floor, interact again.
Rewinding solves the Music Box event but does not remove every other Entity active during the Hunt. Reassess remaining threats after the box is gone.

How to unlock Last Performance
Last Performance requires deliberately releasing and killing the Marionette. This is not something to attempt on a casual run.
Before allowing the third song, confirm:
- You are on Shift 9 or later
- The main aisle is clear and open
- Your strongest ranged weapon is loaded
- A backup weapon is within reach
- Healing is accessible
- No dead-end retreat route is behind you
- No other special Entity is occupying the same lane
Once ready, locate the Music Box so you know where the event is happening, then let all three songs complete without rewinding.

Marionette released after third song
How to kill the Marionette
The Marionette's defining mechanic: it accelerates as it takes damage. Chip damage is the worst approach. A few shots followed by a long retreat leaves you facing a faster creature with less health removed.
Weapon priority for this fight:
- Flamethrower
- SMG
- Shotgun
- Pistol
- Melee (last resort only)
Melee can deal damage, but the speed increase happens fast enough that you lose most of your reaction window before the kill lands.
Marionette attack sequence
- Position yourself at one end of a clear aisle before the third song finishes.
- Equip the strongest loaded ranged weapon.
- Let the Marionette enter the open firing lane.
- Apply sustained damage immediately, moving backward while keeping line of sight.
- Switch to the backup weapon rather than stopping for a long reload.
- Stay out of corners, bathrooms, and dead-end shelf lanes.
- Finish the kill before the speed increase removes your available distance.
One concentrated attack sequence beats multiple short engagements every time.
Co-op role split for the Music Box event
Sending all three players to search the same floor corner is a reliable way to lose the event. Divide responsibilities:
- Music Box runner: Follows the search route, calls out cleared areas, rewinds during a normal run, or tracks song count during a Last Performance attempt.
- Entity controller: Keeps enemies away from the runner, protects the open firing lane, avoids pulling threats onto the Music Box location.
- Support or Marionette finisher: Carries healing and backup ammunition, covers the second entrance, leads the Last Performance kill when that player needs the achievement.
Short callouts keep communication clean: "Found the box," "Rewind complete," "Third song, prepare for Marionette."
If the Demented appears at the same time, one player watches it while another handles the Music Box route. During a Last Performance attempt, avoid releasing the Marionette into the same lane being used to position the Demented.
