Shift At Midnight: How to Escape the Dentist

Getting to the credits in Shift At Midnight is one thing. Getting the ending where everyone actually survives is another. The True Ending has exactly two requirements, both of which need to be in place before Shift 13 wraps up, and missing either one locks you into a worse outcome. This guide walks through every step, plus the fastest ways to stack the $250 you need before time runs out.

What are the requirements for the True Ending?

The True Ending comes down to two conditions, both checked at the conclusion of Shift 13:

  • Keep Clyde alive through the full campaign and make the right call after Shift 12
  • Have $250 saved to cover your pet's surgery when the game checks your balance

Fail either one and the game routes you to a different outcome. Survive Shift 13 with Clyde dead? You get the Empty Home ending. Make the wrong call on Clyde after Shift 12? You're looking at the Grave Decision ending instead. For a full breakdown of what each outcome means narratively, the Shift At Midnight endings guide covers all three in detail.

How to keep Clyde alive through Shift 12

Clyde can die before Shift 12 through regular gameplay events, so the first thing to confirm is that he's still breathing when you reach that story decision. If he dies earlier in the run, the True Ending becomes impossible regardless of how much money you have.

Assuming he's still alive after Shift 12 completes, the game presents a story choice about Clyde. The decision here is straightforward but easy to misread under pressure:

warning
Do NOT call Clyde after Shift 12. Calling him triggers a sacrifice sequence where Clyde saves your pet at the cost of his own life, which locks you into the Grave Decision ending and closes off the True Ending entirely.

Select the option to save Clyde (the "do not call" path). This keeps him alive and shifts the responsibility for the pet's surgery onto you, which is exactly where the $250 requirement comes in.

How to save $250 before Shift 13 ends

The surgery costs exactly $250, checked the moment Shift 13 concludes. You don't need to spend it manually mid-shift; you just need that amount sitting in your balance when the game checks. That said, $250 across 13 shifts while also buying equipment upgrades is a tighter budget than it sounds.

Customer transactions

The register is your primary income source. Every shift, you're checking IDs, expiration dates, and physical irregularities on customers. Getting these right consistently is the most reliable money across the whole run. Sending a real customer away or letting a doppelganger through both cost you shift rewards, so accuracy here compounds over 13 nights.

Not sure how to read the fakes reliably? The doppelganger identification guide covers every tell.

Cleaning and waste disposal

These small tasks add up faster than most players expect:

Rats are the standout here. At $3.00 each, a single rat caught per shift adds $39 to your total across the full run, which is a meaningful chunk of the surgery cost on its own.

tip
Cockroaches pay double if you mop the stain they leave behind. Always follow up the squash with a mop swipe.

Prize wheel gambling

Coins spawn around the store each night. Collect them and spend them on the prize wheel. Wins can reach up to $10 in store credits per spin, which is significant. Once you've unlocked all cosmetics on the wheel, further spins give token refunds that you can cash out or re-use, so the wheel stays useful even late in the run.

tip
There's no penalty for spinning the wheel, so collect every coin you see. Skipping coins is free money left on the floor.

Fast money checklist for all 13 shifts

Here's the priority order for maximizing cash across your run:

  • Check every customer ID accurately to protect your shift reward
  • Hunt rats first when they appear (highest single-task payout at $3.00 each)
  • Collect all coins before the shift ends for wheel spins
  • Mop every stain and squash every cockroach, then mop the stain again
  • Discard all trash and severed limbs in the dumpster
warning
Don't skip equipment upgrades entirely in pursuit of the $250. Some upgrades directly affect your ability to survive shifts and identify doppelgangers correctly, which protects your shift rewards. Balance spending carefully.

For the traps side of your toolkit, the Shift At Midnight traps guide breaks down which ones are worth the cost at different points in the run.

Both conditions need to be met simultaneously. Nail the Clyde decision and hit $250, and the True Ending plays out with everyone surviving. There's no doppelganger-related requirement for this outcome; your accuracy at the register matters for income, not for unlocking the ending directly.

For everything else this game has to offer, including all 10 achievements and the hidden ending trophies, the full Shift At Midnight guides collection has you covered.
