Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 is built around one of gaming's best replay hooks: a branching route system where nearly every stage hides a secret exit behind a specific in-mission objective. A single run takes you through just 7 of the game's 16 stages, and the path you end up on depends entirely on whether you know what to look for. Miss the trigger and you roll on to the default next planet. Hit it and the galaxy map opens up with a new destination.
There are 25 possible routes from Corneria to the final stage, 14 leading to the standard Venom ending and 11 that can take you to Venom 2 and the true fight against Andross's real form. This guide covers every stage, every hidden requirement, and the three distinct difficulty paths worth following.

The Lylat System route map
What are the three main routes through Star Fox?
Though the game never labels them officially, three broadly recognised paths run through the Lylat System at different challenge levels. Playing them in order is the smartest way to see every stage without too much backtracking.
- Easy route: Corneria, Meteo, Fichina, Sector X, Titania, Bolse, Venom
- Medium route: Corneria, Meteo, Katina, Solar, Macbeth, Bolse, Venom
- Hard route: Corneria, Sector Y, Aquas, Zoness, Sector Z, Area 6, Venom 2
The lower path on the map is the most forgiving. The upper path demands precision shooting, stealth, and fast reaction times, and it's the only route that ends with the true ending. Working through all three in sequence means you naturally unlock every stage for individual replay, which matters a lot once Challenge Mode opens up.
All alternate routes: stage-by-stage breakdown
Corneria
Default exit: Meteo Alternate exit: Sector Y
To reach Sector Y, you need to rescue Falco when he calls for help, then fly through all seven stone arches when you pass over the water. Clear both conditions and Falco leads you through a waterfall to a hidden boss fight. Finish it and Sector Y appears on your map.
Meteo
Default exit: Fichina Alternate exit: Katina
Seven energy anomalies appear near the end of Meteo in quick succession. They look like orange portals and you must fly through all seven without missing a single one. Miss any and the rest disappear immediately. Each anomaly you pass through also speeds up your Arwing, so the sequence gets harder as it goes.

Sector Y
Default exit: Katina Alternate exit: Aquas
Get at least 100 Mission Hits before the stage ends. There are plenty of targets: ships, turrets, projectiles. Lock on to groups whenever possible to rack up multiples at once. Hit the threshold and the path to Aquas unlocks.
Fichina
Default exit: Sector X Alternate exit: Solar
This is your first all-range encounter with Star Wolf. Take down all four members of the enemy squad before the timer hits zero and you earn the Solar route. Leave any of them alive when time expires and you head to Sector X instead.
Katina
Default exit: Sector X Alternate exit: Solar
The Saucerer mothership enters the stage and you need to destroy it before the clock runs out. Its hatches open periodically to release fighters; those open, glowing yellow hatches are the weak points. Pour everything into them when they're exposed. Destroy the Saucerer in time and you go to Solar. Let it survive and you go to Sector X.
Aquas
No alternate exit. Completing Aquas always leads to Zoness.
Zoness
Default exit: Macbeth Alternate exit: Sector Z
This is arguably the hardest alternate exit requirement in the game. You must destroy all 36 searchlight buoys across the stage without a single one spotting you. Your wingmates will occasionally take out buoys on their own, so keep them alive. Getting caught by even one spotlight closes off the Sector Z path.
Sector X
Default exit: Titania (Slippy gets downed by Spyborg) Alternate exit 1: Macbeth (keep Slippy alive through the boss fight) Alternate exit 2: Sector Z (find and fly through the four warp gates)
Sector X has three possible destinations, making it the most complex branching stage. For the warp gate exit, take the left fork partway through the level. You'll find four rectangular panels with a bluish-white glow. Shoot them open and fly through all four to warp to Sector Z. Note that if you take the warp gates, you can still choose between Sector Z and Macbeth on the map screen.

Solar
No alternate exit. Solar always leads to Macbeth.
Titania
No alternate exit. Titania always leads to Bolse.
Macbeth
Default exit: Bolse Alternate exit: Area 6
Macbeth is a Landmaster stage where you chase a train. Eight numbered rail locks run along the track, turning from red to green when activated. Hit all eight, then hit the final rail switch at the end of the run, and the train derails, sending you to Area 6. Miss any lock or the final switch and you end up at Bolse.
Sector Z
Default exit: Bolse Alternate exit: Area 6
Six Copperhead Missiles are fired at the Great Fox during this all-range stage. Destroy all six before any of them make contact and you advance to Area 6. Let even one hit and you go to Bolse instead. Ignore your wingmates' distress calls and focus entirely on getting behind each missile to deal consistent damage until it explodes.
Bolse
No alternate exit. Bolse always leads to Venom.
Area 6
No alternate exit. Area 6 always leads to Venom 2.
How do you reach Venom 2 and the true ending?
Reaching Venom 2 requires entering the final stage via Area 6, which you can get to through either Macbeth (all eight rail locks plus the switch) or Sector Z (all six Copperhead Missiles destroyed). The standard Venom route through Bolse puts you against a version of Andross, but it's not his true form.
Venom 2 opens with a fight against Star Wolf before you enter the fortress. After defeating all four of them, you face Andross's real form: a brain with glowing eyes that doesn't appear in the standard ending. Defeat him and you get an additional escape sequence guided by the ghost of James McCloud, Fox's father, a segment that doesn't exist in the normal ending at all.

Frequently asked questions
How many stages are there in Star Fox?
16 total stages, all starting from Corneria and ending at either Venom or Venom 2. Each individual run takes you through exactly 7 of them.
Are any routes or stages new in the Switch 2 version?
No. The stages and routes are identical to the Nintendo 64 original. Some unlock descriptions have been formalised or reworded, but the methods and destinations are unchanged.
Can you go back to an earlier stage on the same run?
No. Routes only move forward. There are no more than 7 stages per playthrough, and you can only progress toward Venom or Venom 2 based on the paths available at each step.
