Focus Points sit at the center of every operator build in Star Wars Zero Company, and the single most important thing to know about them is that nothing you spend is locked in. Every point can come back for free between missions, which means the correct approach is to spend aggressively, test builds in the field, and retune constantly rather than hoarding points out of caution.
What do Focus Points actually do?
Focus Points are a per-operator currency spent inside each character's personal Focus Tree, accessed at the Personnel console in the Den. They do not unlock brand-new skills. Instead, they upgrade the Abilities, Passives, and Talents an operator already has, across a tiered grid that runs up to six tiers deep.
Two things are worth clarifying early. First, Focus Points are not a shared squad pool. Points invested in one operator stay with that operator and never carry over to anyone else. Second, every crew member, including custom recruits and authored story characters, maintains a completely separate Focus Tree.
How to refund and reassign Focus Points
The refund system lives entirely at the Personnel console in the Den. There is no in-mission or loadout-screen version of it. Here is the full process:
- Walk up to the terminal in the Den's main room and interact with it.
- Open PERSONNEL and cycle through the roster to find the operator you want to rebuild.
- Switch from the OVERVIEW tab to the FOCUS TREE tab. Your current Focus Points Remaining displays on screen.
- Move the cursor onto a node you have already purchased. Purchased nodes show a REFUND prompt; unpurchased nodes only show UPGRADE.
- Press Spacebar on PC, or select the on-screen REFUND option, to reclaim the points tied to that node.
- Work down from the top of any chain you want to clear, since mid-chain nodes often cannot be refunded until the nodes above them are removed first.
- Spend the reclaimed points on the nodes you actually want. Changes apply immediately with no separate save step.
The refund is node-by-node, not a full wipe. You can shave a single rank off one talent without touching anything else in the build, which makes fine-tuning between missions fast and low-risk.

What can and cannot be respecceed?
Not everything in the Focus Tree is flexible. Here is a quick breakdown:
For story characters like Hawks, points spent in their personal Talent at the top of the tree are not refunded when you swap specialization. Only the specialization-related points come back. Standard class abilities and passives refund freely.
How to earn more Focus Points
Three reliable channels feed your Focus Point income across a full campaign. Bonds carry the most weight over time, but all three stack and none should be ignored.
Earning from Tactical Missions
The baseline source is simply playing the game. Finishing Tactical Missions awards Focus Points to your active operators, so the Focus Trees grow as you clear content. Performance matters here: chaining kills, landing assists, and completing missions cleanly earns points faster than grinding through the same fight messily.

Building operator Bonds
Bonds are the source worth structuring your roster around. Every time a pair's Bond level increases, both operators gain +1 Focus Point, plus a Cross Training choice from a set of joint training bonuses. Selecting Freeform Training as that reward hands +2 Focus Points to both operators in the pair, making it the strongest option for pure progression.
Bond meters grow through backup assists, shared kills, healing between squadmates, and simply completing missions together. Certain dialogue choices push the meter too. The relationship meter runs from Very Low to Very High, so the most efficient approach is keeping the same two operators deployed side by side across the campaign rather than rotating your lineup every mission.

The Crew Focus base upgrade
The third source is a base investment rather than something earned in the field. Under base upgrades, open the Crew tab and find the Crew Focus line. Upgrading it grants extra Focus Points to every operator at once. The Focus Point II tier adds +3 Focus Points across your whole roster and costs roughly 1,750 supplies plus a required Den development level to unlock.
Other crew upgrades may deserve priority earlier in the campaign, but Crew Focus is a strong later-game buy that quietly boosts your entire squad in one transaction.
When should you refund and rebuild?
The most common trigger is the mid-campaign unlock of a second specialization, which makes some earlier purchases redundant. An operator built purely into one specialization's deeper ranks may be better served by pulling points from those tiers and investing them into the new tree instead.
It also matters because several talents scale unevenly. Ranks I through III of a talent often add incremental numbers, while the final rank changes how the talent behaves entirely. Sabotage becomes unlimited per combat at rank IV. Anticipation can be applied to an ally at its final rank. Cold-Blooded starts granting two Vicious stacks at rank IV. Spreading points thinly across three half-finished talents is almost always weaker than consolidating into one completed chain.
