Surviving Subnautica 2 without Adaptations is a short experience. These biological upgrades, unlocked by interacting with alien organisms called Angel Combs, determine whether you can eat local food, breathe pressurized air, or push into the planet's most hostile zones. There are four in the current build of the game, and two of them require real effort to reach.
What are Adaptations in Subnautica 2?
Adaptations are permanent biological modifications your character gains by touching an Angel Comb, a glowing alien organism found at specific locations across the ocean. Each Angel Comb carries unique genetic material that rewrites part of your physiology. The first one is impossible to miss. The rest require navigation, preparation, and in some cases, clearing infestations before you can interact with them.
Skipping these is not an option. The Digestion Adaptation, for example, is required before local food stops dealing damage to you. Without it, every meal you cook from alien resources will hurt you instead of healing you.

All Angel Comb locations and Adaptations
Here is every Adaptation confirmed in the current version of Subnautica 2, along with locations and what each one does.
Sources note this list is subject to change as Subnautica 2 is in early access. More Angel Combs may be added in future updates.
Pressure Tolerance
This is your starting Adaptation, handed to you during the prologue before you ever leave the ship. The Angel Comb is in the chamber directly adjacent to where you wake up. You cannot proceed without it, and you cannot miss it. Pressure Tolerance allows you to breathe the alien planet's pressurized atmosphere, which is the baseline requirement for everything else in the game.

Subnautica 2 Guide: All Angel Comb Locations and Adaptations
How to get the Digestion Adaptation
Head roughly 150 to 180 meters north or northeast of your Lifepod, keeping your compass between north and northeast. You are looking for Anita's Black Box, and the Angel Comb sits close to it. The Angel Comb here requires no special preparation: swim up to the glowing pink sacs at the top and interact with them.
The Digestion Adaptation is the most immediately useful unlock after the prologue. Before you get it, every piece of food you prepare from alien resources will damage you on consumption. Once you have it, fish like the Halfmoon and other local fauna become safe to eat.
You can also scan colony supplies at the workstation near this Angel Comb to unlock additional blueprints, so do not rush past the area.
For a step-by-step walkthrough of the digestive incompatibility problem and how this Adaptation solves it, check out our guide on how to unlock the Digestion Adaptation.
NOA will eventually ping you about Anita's Black Box as part of the main story, so this Angel Comb is naturally on your path. You can also swim there immediately after landing if you want the Digestion Adaptation early.
How to get the Heat Tolerance Adaptation
This one takes more work. From your Lifepod, head northwest, keeping your compass between 330 and 345 degrees. You will find an adult Angel Comb at roughly 200 meters, but it is surrounded by an infestation of Viral Blooms. You cannot interact with the Angel Comb until the infestation is cleared.
To clear it, you need the Sonic Resonator, a tool that requires you to have already established a base and progressed far enough to craft it. This means Heat Tolerance is not an early-game pickup. Head southwest from the first infected Angel Comb and you will find a second one. Clear the infestations around both, then interact with the second to unlock Heat Tolerance.
For the full infestation-clearing process, our guide on how to cure the Angel Comb covers every step.
Do not attempt the Heat Tolerance Angel Comb without the Sonic Resonator. The infestation blocks interaction entirely, and you will waste a trip.
How to get the Axum Vision Adaptation
The fourth Adaptation is the most remote. Travel east from your Lifepod until you reach the Alien Base at approximately 1,300 meters. Keep going past it and you will find a Power Center at around 1,800 meters. You need a Tadpole submarine with the Depth mod equipped to survive this area without taking damage.
The Angel Comb here is surrounded by infected Bloom Clankers that must be cleared before you can interact with it. Once cleared, Axum Vision unlocks the ability to interact with Axum alien technology throughout the world.
What order should you unlock Adaptations?
Pressure Tolerance is automatic. After that, Digestion should be your first stop since it gates your food supply. Heat Tolerance comes once you have a base and the Sonic Resonator. Axum Vision is last, requiring submarine access and significant progression.
Building toward all four means you will need a solid crafting foundation first. Our complete Subnautica 2 tools guide covers every tool you need to craft, including the Sonic Resonator and Tadpole prerequisites.
The game is in early access as of May 2026. Adaptation counts, locations, and unlock requirements may change with future patches from Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
