Subnautica 2 Guide: Where to Find Gold

Gold is one of those resources in Subnautica 2 that you won't need immediately, but when you do need it, you need a lot of it. Building a Thermal Plant, crafting Advanced Wiring Kits, and producing Gold Ingots all depend on having a reliable supply. The catch: gold only spawns in the lava region, and you can't survive there without a specific genetic adaptation. This guide covers exactly how to unlock access, where to find the best deposits, and how to farm efficiently.

What do you need before farming gold?

Before heading east toward the volcanic vents, you need the Heat Tolerance adaptation. Without it, the superheated water in the lava region will kill you quickly. You can't skip this step.

Unlocking heat tolerance requires working through the blackbox signal chain. Keep clearing signals by interacting with blackboxes until you receive a signal from the Wander Blackbox. That signal tasks you with crafting a Sonic Resonator and curing the large pink Angel Comb flower. Once you've used the Sonic Resonator to clear the viral growths around the bloom and cured it, place your hand on the Angel Comb to receive the adaptation. It's the third adaptation in the sequence, after pressure tolerance and digestion.

Where to find gold in Subnautica 2

Gold is found exclusively in the lava region, which sits to the east of the Lifepod. Swimming east-southeast for roughly 250 meters from the Lifepod will bring you into the lava region. You'll know you've arrived when fiery sparks appear in the water and the temperature gauge activates on your screen.

You can navigate to the rocks around the crashed colony ship, located approximately 450 meters directly east of the Lifepod. The colony ship wreck is a reliable landmark and has plenty of gold deposits nearby, though predatory fish patrol the area.

Gold deposits appear in three forms across the lava region:

  • Small loose fragments you can collect by hand with no tool required
  • Small breakable blocks that shatter easily
  • Large ore nodes that require the Sonic Resonator to break, yielding 5 gold per node

The ore itself has a distinctive yellow, comb-like appearance. You'll find deposits on the seabed, along rock walls, and on the large red lava coral structures. Even with the Heat Tolerance adaptation active, staying too close to heat sources will still deal damage, so grab what you can quickly and move away.

Where is the best gold farming spot?

The single best gold farming location in Subnautica 2 is a large, spider-like lava coral structure sitting directly above the Cicada Wreck. This coral is the last in a row of three as you continue east from the Lifepod's direction, and it's covered in gold ore veins far more densely than any other coral in the area.

A single run on this coral can yield at least 40 gold. That number assumes you're breaking the large nodes with the Sonic Resonator (5 gold each) and collecting the smaller pieces by hand.

Bring enough supplies before heading out. Here's what you need to bring:

  • Sufficient water bottles to stay hydrated during the run
  • A full air tank for extended dive time
  • Distraction flares for aggressive fish
  • The Sonic Resonator to break large nodes

What is gold used for in Subnautica 2?

Gold feeds into several mid-to-late game recipes. The confirmed uses are:

The Advanced Wiring Kit is arguably the most important downstream use since it feeds into multiple higher-tier crafting recipes. The Thermal Plant is one of the better base power options alongside the Hydroelectric Turbine, both outperforming Solar Panels for consistent energy production.

Gold Ingots require 3 raw gold pieces processed in the Processor. Plan your farming runs with that conversion rate in mind, especially if you're building infrastructure that needs multiple ingots.
