Introduction

Five friends. One ghost ship. Zero guarantees anyone makes it out alive. Man of Medan is Supermassive Games' first entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology, a series of standalone branching horror games built around the idea that every choice carries real weight. Whether the whole group survives or nobody does depends entirely on the decisions made along the way, making this one of the more replayable narrative horror experiences available.

Overview

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan drops players into a supernatural nightmare set aboard an abandoned WWII ghost ship somewhere in the South Pacific. What starts as a holiday diving trip for five friends unravels fast once a storm rolls in and the group finds themselves trapped on a vessel that should have stayed at the bottom of the ocean. Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn, applies the same branching cinematic formula here, with every dialogue choice, quick-time event, and exploration decision feeding into a story that can end very differently depending on how you play.

The game's central hook is simple and effective: all five playable characters can live, and all five can die. There's no plot armor protecting anyone, which means a single missed QTE or a poorly chosen response in a tense conversation can cost a character their life permanently. The upgraded version of the game adds difficulty settings, QTE warnings, and an extended chapter called "Flooded" that introduces new deaths and a reworked ending sequence, giving returning players a reason to go back through the story.

Gameplay and mechanics

Man of Medan plays like an interactive horror film. You walk characters through environments, collect clues and pictures that hint at the ship's dark history, and make dialogue choices during conversations that shift relationships and outcomes. The quick-time events handle the action sequences, and the game's updated difficulty settings now let players tune how forgiving those moments are.

The Curator's Cut is unlocked after completing the main story and offers new scenes played from different characters' viewpoints, with entirely new choices available. It's a smart way to extend the runtime and reward players who want to see the full shape of the narrative rather than just one path through it.

Multiplayer and social features

Man of Medan supports both online and local multiplayer, and the co-op modes genuinely change how the horror lands. Online, two players can experience the story together, each controlling different characters and making independent choices that affect the shared outcome. Offline, up to five players can pass a single controller through the group, each taking charge of their own character during their scenes.

Playing with others adds a layer of tension that solo runs can't replicate. When a friend makes a bad call and a character you were trying to keep alive suddenly isn't, the blame falls somewhere real. The social pressure of group play is part of what makes the multiplayer modes worth trying.

Content and replayability

A single playthrough of Man of Medan runs roughly three to four hours, which sounds short until you factor in how many different outcomes exist. Character deaths change which scenes play out, certain secrets only surface if specific characters survive to specific points, and the Curator's Cut adds scenes that aren't accessible in a standard first run.

The "Flooded" chapter added in the free upgrade introduces new death scenarios at the game's climax, giving even players who've finished the original release something new to experience. Across multiple playthroughs with different choices, the story reveals itself in layers, and the branching horror narrative design means no two runs feel identical.
