Introduction

One bad decision can get everyone killed. The Quarry is Supermassive Games' take on the interactive horror movie, putting you in control of nine camp counselors as their last night of summer turns into something nightmarish. With a cast of recognizable actors, a branching narrative that reacts to every choice, and enough ways to die that no two playthroughs look the same, this is survival horror built around storytelling.

Overview

The Quarry, developed by Supermassive Games and published by 2K Games, is a cinematic horror adventure released on June 10, 2022. Set in the remote forests of upstate New York, it follows nine teen counselors at Hackett's Quarry summer camp who find themselves hunted after the kids go home and the adults disappear. The game plays like an interactive horror film, with players making choices and completing quick-time events that determine who survives the night.

Supermassive built their reputation on this format with the Until Dawn series, and The Quarry carries that DNA into something bigger in scope. The cast includes David Arquette, Ariel Winter, Justice Smith, and Brenda Song, among others, and the performances are captured with enough fidelity that character expressions actually read as genuine fear or relief. That commitment to performance capture gives the game a texture most interactive dramas skip.

The story branches constantly. A choice made in chapter two can close off an entire character arc by chapter seven. Players who want to understand the full narrative need multiple runs, because no single playthrough reveals everything.

Branching narrative and player choice

The core of The Quarry is its decision system, which shapes not just who dies but how the story is framed. Key features of the choice structure include:

  • Evidence collection that unlocks backstory
  • Tarot card readings that hint at future events
  • Relationship meters that affect dialogue options
  • Quick-time events that can be failed or passed
  • A rewind mechanic that lets players undo one death per playthrough

The rewind system is a smart addition for players who want to experiment without restarting entire chapters. Spend a Death Card, and you get one chance to change an outcome. It removes some of the sting without eliminating the tension entirely.

The game also includes a Movie Mode, which plays through the story automatically based on preset survival preferences. Want everyone to live? Set it up and watch. Want a bloodbath? That works too. It turns the game into something closer to a passive viewing experience, which sounds like a compromise but actually makes The Quarry accessible to people who want the story without the stress of QTEs.

World and setting

Hackett's Quarry works as a horror setting because it earns its dread slowly. The camp feels lived-in during the daylight sections, with the counselors joking around and flirting before things deteriorate. Once night falls, the same locations read completely differently. Cabins that felt safe become traps. The woods stop being a backdrop and start being a threat.

The antagonists include blood-soaked locals and something more supernatural lurking behind them, and the game is careful not to reveal its hand too early. There are genuine surprises in the back half that land because the first few chapters do the work of building character attachment.

Multiplayer and replayability

The Quarry supports local and online multiplayer, letting groups of up to eight players pass control between characters during a single session. Each player takes responsibility for specific counselors, which turns decision-making into a social experience. Arguments about who to save and which path to take are half the point.

Online co-op lets players join a friend's session remotely, a feature that suits the game's horror-movie-night appeal. With 186 potential story endings and a cast that can be entirely wiped out or entirely saved depending on player behavior, the replayability is genuine rather than cosmetic. The Deluxe Edition adds the Gorefest content pack and a movie-night feature that expands the passive viewing options further, giving returning players additional reasons to revisit Hackett's Quarry one more time.
