The Hall of Fallen Foes is the Ocarina of Time remake's new boss rematch area, and you reach it by sleeping in a glowing bed. Kaepora Gaebora tells you about it first. Here's how to unlock it and what's inside.

Key takeaways

  • The Hall of Fallen Foes is new to the remake. The N64 original had nothing like it.
  • You reach it by sleeping in a bed that glows green, and after your first visit any bed works.
  • Most guides say it opens after the Forest Temple, but they don't fully agree on the trigger.
  • Every enemy you've beaten gets a statue with notes, and the bosses can be rematched against a timer.
  • Owl statues start boss gauntlets, where your health carries over from fight to fight.

What is the Hall of Fallen Foes?

It's a place where you can look back at every enemy you've beaten and fight the bosses again. The Nintendo store page describes it as an area where you learn about the enemies you've defeated.

I played all the original Zeldas, and none of them had this. The N64 version of Ocarina of Time had no boss rush at all. The 3DS version added a Boss Challenge, and KeenGamer and Zelda Wiki both describe the Hall of Fallen Foes as the remake's take on that idea, with a lot more in it.

The host is Kaepora Gaebora, the owl. When you want to leave, talk to him.

How do you unlock the Hall of Fallen Foes?

You get there by sleeping in a bed. When it's available, the bed glows green with a swirling circle on it, and Navi mentions having a weird dream. Game8, TheGamer and Shacknews all agree on that part.

When it unlocks is where the launch-day guides disagree:

  • TheGamer says it opens after you beat the Forest Temple, through a green circle on Link's own bed in Kokiri Forest.
  • Shacknews says it opens after you return the Master Sword, when Kaepora Gaebora in Kakariko tells you "any bed will do."
  • Game8 just says it opens as you progress through the game, possibly after the Prelude of Light.
  • Nintendo Life says it's after the Forest Temple, with Kaepora outside Kakariko and a glowing green bed.

Most of them point to the same moment: after the Forest Temple, Kaepora Gaebora tells you about it, and then a glowing bed takes you there. If you've finished the Forest Temple and haven't seen a glowing bed, go and find Kaepora in or around Kakariko and talk to him.

After your first visit, any bed gives you the option. TheGamer adds that there are also teleport points at Impa's House, the Lakeside Laboratory and the Carpenter's Camp, though that's one guide.

Beds matter more in the remake generally. Game8 says you can now sleep in them to heal and change the time of day, so you'll be using them anyway.

What's inside the Hall of Fallen Foes?

Statues. Each enemy you've beaten gets one, with a description, the main places you'll find it, and the items that work best against it. Zelda Wiki, Game8 and TheGamer all describe the same setup. It's basically a bestiary you can walk around in.

Game8's list has 57 enemies and 27 bosses, which probably counts mini-bosses as bosses. That's from one guide, and it's still marked as a work in progress.

Fill it in as you go. A statue only shows up once you've beaten that enemy, so a gap tells you there's something you haven't fought yet.

How do boss rematches work?

Boss statues have a Rematch option. You fight the boss again, and a timer records how long you took.

TheGamer says rematches limit your gear to what you'd normally have for that fight. Its example is Phantom Ganon, where you get the Fairy Bow, the Hookshot and one Red Potion. That's from one guide, but it makes sense, since otherwise you'd just bring the Biggoron Sword to every fight.

RPG Site's review says there are no leaderboards and no modifiers, so the timer is just for you. There's no online ranking to chase.

Some of the bosses also fight a bit differently from the original. RPG Site says some have new attacks, used rarely, and Nintendo's Ask the Developer interview says Gohma's arms now guard its weak spot.

Tips for the boss rematches

A few of the bosses changed in the remake, so it's worth knowing before you go for a fast time.

  • Gohma: Nintendo says its arms now guard its weak spot while it's immune, so wait for the opening rather than swinging at it.
  • Phantom Ganon: RPG Site says its projectiles now move at a consistently slow speed, so they're easier to deal with.
  • Morpha: TheGamer says to stay on the outer ring and use the Longshot to pull the nucleus out of the water. Mash A if it grabs you.
  • Twinrova: RPG Site says its attacks were toned down.
  • Dark Link: TheGamer says Din's Fire works because he can't block it. A jump attack also gets through with the Master Sword.

What are the boss gauntlets?

The silver owl statues of Kaepora Gaebora start boss gauntlets. Shacknews and TheGamer both say there are young and adult versions, and your health carries over between fights. So it's a proper boss rush, and you need to manage your hearts across the whole run, not just one fight.

What are the rewards for the Hall of Fallen Foes?

Nobody agrees yet. Shacknews says there's a chest with a Gold Rupee, worth 200 Rupees, before each fight in a gauntlet. RPG Site's review says the rewards are knick-knacks for the shelf in Link's bedroom. TheGamer and Game8 don't mention rewards at all.

Both could be true, with Rupees for gauntlet fights and ornaments for clearing things. Until more people have finished it, treat the rewards as unconfirmed. The Rupees would be handy, though, since Game8 says Great Fairies now charge Rupees for their upgrades.

Can you see the Hall of Fallen Foes outside the game?

Yes. The ZELDA NOTES app for the Nintendo Switch App shows your Hall of Fallen Foes, according to Nintendo's store page and Nintendo Everything. ZELDA NOTES arrived with the 1.1.1 update on November 4.

Is the Hall of Fallen Foes worth doing?

If you liked the bosses, yes. A lot of people playing the remake are going to be people like me, going for the nostalgia, and this is the biggest new extra in it. There's no Master Quest and no hard mode, according to Kotaku and RPG Site's review, so boss rematches and gauntlets are the main thing to do after the credits.

It also adds a bit of time. The original took about 27 hours for the story and 37 to do everything, going by our remake length guide. For everything else that's new, see our list of remake changes.
