Your island starts small, but every new resident and solved problem chips away at the requirements locking the next building. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has 14 confirmed shops and facilities, each tied to specific milestones rather than a single progression bar. Knowing exactly what triggers each one means you stop waiting and start building.
All Shops and Facilities & How to Unlock Them
The MiiWheel Ferris Wheel is the only one with unlock conditions still listed as TBA across both sources, so treat the rest of this table as complete.
info
The Marketplace and Tomoria Café both require 8 Mii residents, so they can unlock around the same time. Prioritize whichever function you need first.
How to unlock new buildings faster
The two sources agree on the core strategy: grow your population and keep residents happy. Here is what that looks like in practice.

All island facilities at a glance
Add Mii residents consistently
Most buildings are gated behind resident counts, with thresholds at 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 8, and 8 Miis. The fastest path through the early game is simply adding residents as quickly as possible. Use the Add Resident button in the Mii menu on the lower left of the screen to bring new characters to your island.
Resolve Mii Ponderings
Ponderings are the thought bubbles that appear above a Mii's head when they have a problem or request. Resolving them is required for both Fresh Kingdom and the Wishing Fountain, the two earliest buildings in the game. Ponderings vary from wanting a new resident to requesting interaction with specific buildings or other Miis. Check on your residents regularly and act on these requests promptly.
Build friendships between Miis
T&C Reno requires 2 Miis to be friends, and Foto-Tomo requires 10 total friendships across your island. Friendships grow through regular interaction, so make a habit of having Miis spend time together. This pays off across multiple unlock conditions simultaneously.
Use the Wishing Fountain to expand the island
The Wishing Fountain is the only building with an upgrade mechanic. Delivering Warm Fuzzies to it levels up the island, which expands your capacity for more Miis and opens up additional content. According to Game8's documentation, additional items in most other shops unlock through Wishing Fountain wishes rather than shop upgrades. Most buildings are fully functional the moment they open, so the Fountain is your main progression lever beyond raw resident count.
warning
Do not ignore the Wishing Fountain early. It directly feeds into unlocking My Treasures, which requires spending a wish after creating a Palette House item.Do any shops have upgrades?
Almost none. According to Game8's walkthrough team, the vast majority of shops and facilities provide their full functionality the moment they are built. The Wishing Fountain is the sole exception, requiring Warm Fuzzies to upgrade both Mii Wishes and the island itself. If you are waiting for a shop to get better over time, stop waiting. What you see when it opens is what you get.
info
Since Rite Price unlocks randomly after receiving a few treasures from minigames, play minigames with your Miis regularly. You cannot force this trigger, but staying active with minigames is the fastest way to hit it.What should you prioritize first?
Fresh Kingdom and the Wishing Fountain share the same unlock condition (1 resident, 1 resolved Pondering) and should be your first targets. Fresh Kingdom keeps your Miis fed and leveled, while the Wishing Fountain is your long-term progression engine. From there, focus on hitting 3 residents for Where & Wear, then 4 residents plus 2 friendships for T&C Reno. The resident count milestones at 7 and 8 deliver the most buildings per threshold, so push toward those as efficiently as you can.
