Valheim Deep North Guide: Best Ways to Farm Ice

Ice is one of those resources in Valheim that looks simple on the surface but quietly becomes the backbone of your entire Deep North production chain. You need it to fuel the Frigid Kiln, which produces Liquid Frost, which powers the Frost Foundry. Without a steady Ice supply, your crafting pipeline stalls completely. Here's exactly where to find it and how to keep your stockpile full.

Where does Ice spawn in the Deep North?

Ice is exclusive to the Deep North biome. You won't find it anywhere else on the map, which makes your first trip to this frozen region the starting point for everything Ice-related. The material has a weight of 1 per unit and stacks up to 50, so a single inventory run can net you a decent haul if you know where to look.

The most reliable source is the large Ice Sheets that float along the coastline. Pull out your Pickaxe and start breaking them down. The yields are consistent and the sheets respawn, making this the go-to method for bulk farming. Coastal areas tend to cluster these sheets together, so once you find a productive stretch of shoreline, mark it on your map.

What's the fastest way to farm Ice?

If swinging a Pickaxe feels tedious, Ember Charges offer a faster alternative. Throw them at frozen ponds found farther inland and the explosion breaks the ice, collecting the material in bulk. Keep your distance and let the explosion do the work.

A third method that gets overlooked is targeting frozen corpses scattered across the Deep North. Frozen Skeletons, Greydwarves, and Greydwarf Shamans that have been encased in ice can't fight back, making them completely safe to break. Use a Grappling Hook to cover ground quickly and track down clusters of these frozen enemies. The yield per corpse is smaller than Ice Sheets, but the safety and ease make it worth doing while you're traveling between other objectives.

Not every creature you encounter in the Deep North is frozen, though. Live enemies also drop Ice when killed, so combat in this biome doubles as passive farming.

What is Ice used for in Valheim?

The primary use is fueling the Frigid Kiln, which converts Ice into Liquid Frost. Liquid Frost then powers the Frost Foundry, the crafting station you'll rely on for Deep North gear and weapons. If you want to understand exactly which weapons are worth crafting there, the Valheim weapons tier list breaks down the best options by biome and damage type.

Beyond the production chain, Ice feeds into a surprising number of recipes. The full list of items that require Ice:

  • Bloodgold Payload
  • Cast: Northern Vengeance
  • Fish Soup
  • Lingonberry Juice
  • Northern Vengeance
  • Oat Milk
  • Seal Meat Soup
  • Snowball
  • Frigid Kiln (construction)
  • Ice Block (construction)

Food recipes like Fish Soup, Lingonberry Juice, Oat Milk, and Seal Meat Soup mean Ice feeds directly into your sustain. Deep North exploration puts heavy pressure on your health and stamina, so keeping food buffs active matters. Stockpiling Ice isn't just about crafting weapons; it's about staying alive long enough to use them.

Can you spawn Ice with console commands?

Yes. If you want to skip the farming entirely, toggle the console option in gameplay settings, press F5, type devcommands, then use the spawn command with the Ice item code. This bypasses the need to visit the Deep North at all, though it obviously removes the challenge. For players working through the full progression, the manual farming methods are the intended path.

How much Ice should you stockpile?

The Frigid Kiln runs continuously as long as it has fuel, and Liquid Frost gets consumed by the Frost Foundry during every crafting session. Combined with the food and construction recipes listed above, Ice demand adds up faster than most players expect on their first Deep North run. A practical target is keeping at least a full chest (50 units per slot) reserved specifically for Frigid Kiln fuel, with a separate supply for food and other recipes.

For players still getting oriented in the biome, the Valheim beginner's guide covers the broader survival mechanics that apply before you reach the Deep North, including food, stamina, and crafting fundamentals.

tip
Dedicate a second chest specifically to Ice used in food recipes. Mixing your Frigid Kiln fuel with cooking ingredients leads to accidental shortages during long crafting sessions.
